AKRON COUNCILENGINEERING AND SCIENTIFIC SOCIETIES(ACESS)The purpose of the Akron Council of Engineering and ScientificSocieties (ACESS) is to enhance the technical environment in theGreater Akron area through coordination and cooperation withtechnical societies, industry and academia by: Providing a forum for action on matters of concern and interestto the technical and scientific communities. Serving as a focal point for contact between the technicalcommunity and the business community, academia andsociety at large. Promoting inter-society communication, professionalinterchange of ideas and coordination of society activities. Promoting interest in and encouraging careers in technicalprofessions.ACESS is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, incorporated under thelaws of the State of Ohio, operating exclusively for scientific andeducational purposes.Societies eligible for council membership are professional technicalorganizations with acceptable ethical standards, which have, as theirobjectives, the advancement of the theory and practice of the scienceconcerned. MASTER OF CEREMONIESGary Johnson is the Executive Vice President, ARCADIS SPF. He grew upin Toledo where he attended the University of Toledo, obtaining a BS inCivil Engineering.After taking a one-year certification program in publicworks construction, Gary joined Finkbeiner, Petitis &Strout, Inc in the firm's Toledo office. In 1978 hebecame manager of the branch office in Akron.Between 1978 and 1995, when he became president ofthe firm, he was instrumental in the growth of the Akronoffice from a handful of employees to nearly 60.Over the years Gary developed an expertise in wastewater engineeringand was called upon to help with the Great Lakes Quality Initiative TaskForce. He is a past officer of the American Society of Civil Engineers (pastpresident of the Akron/Canton Section), the American Water WorksAssociation, National Society of Professional Engineers, ACEC-Ohio, OhioWater Environment Association, and Water Environment Federation. Hehas been recognized with many awards for his environmental work withwater.THE ACESS AWARDThe ACESS Award is given to an individual who has made anoutstanding contribution to the Akron Council of Engineering &Scientific Societies. The 2004 recipient, Jan Ruthenburg, is theformer ACESS Office Services Secretary.Jan Ruthenburg began serving ACESS in 1994. Atthat time she did the bulk mailings for four membersocieties, handled banquet reservations, processedACESS mail and telephone calls plus quarterlyinvoicing. Additionally, she typed up and mailed theminutes of ACESS Board Meetings. Jan’s knowledgeof the professional scientific societies and belief inwhat ACESS offers our community made her a naturalto serve ACESS.7

To qualify for theGovernor’s Award, each school must have conducted a local sciencefair with 20 or more students, sent one or more of these students toone of the Ohio Science Academy’s District Science Days, andinvolved students in one or more youth science opportunities beyondthe classroom.East High science teachers worked very hard last year with thestudents. These teachers spent untold hours after school workingwith their students on projects that were entered in our ScienceEXPO, some of which were also entered at Science Day at theUniversity of Akron. Two of the teachers accompanied a group ofstudents to the Envirothon, a natural resource competition for highschool students. Students compete in five areas: soils, forestry,aquatics, wildlife and an environmental issue. East High’s ScienceClub was very active during the year engaging in such activities asspelunking at Aultman Cave.9

SCIENCE FAIR WINNERSBest of Show Akron Science & Technology ExpoMichael Musarra won the ACESS Award for the outstanding project atthe Akron Science & Technology Expo held at the Akron CentralHower High School on February 28, 2004. The title of his projectwas “Pendulums: Length vs Weight”. Michael is currently in the8th grade at Miller South School for the Visual & Performing Artsin Akron, Ohio. His science advisor was Ms Heydorn.Best of Show 55th Western Reserve District 5 Science DayRebecca Ussai won the ACESS Award for the outstanding project atthe 55th Western Reserve District 5 Science Day held at TheUniversity of Akron on March 20, 2004. The title of her projectwas “Which Type of Bridge is Stronger”. Rebecca is currently inthe 10th grade at Beaumont School in Highland Heights, Ohio.Her science advisor was Mrs Gretchen Santo.ACESS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDWINNERSTwo 1,000 scholarships are awarded each year,one each to a student of The University of Akronand to a student of Kent State University. ACS AWARD WINNERSEach year the Akron Section of the American Chemical Society(ACS) provides three 500 awards to students in nearby colleges anduniversities. THE DISTINGUISHED AWARD OF COUNCILThe Distinguished Award of Council is presented annually to anoutstanding citizen for his/her technical and managerial achievements andinvolvement in civic activities. The 2004 recipient of this award is MayorDonald L Plusquellic.In January 2004, Donald L. Plusquellic began his 18th year as Mayor ofthe City of Akron after being re-elected for a fifth four-yearterm. The city’s longest-serving mayor is a life-longresident of Akron. He became the 59th Mayor of Akron in1987, after serving with distinction for 13 years on AkronCity Council, including three years as president from1984-1987. Citizens of Ward 9 first elected him to councilas their representative in 1973, when he was 24 yearsold.Don Plusquellic has devoted 30 years to public service ina career highlighted by great leadership successes locallyand nationally. In 2002, the Mayor was elected Chairman of the AdvisoryBoard of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM), and ispresident of the organization as of June 2004.Among Mayor Plusquellic’s passions is public education. He has been afaithful partner with the Akron Public Schools in providing leadership andthe assurance of community-wide support for the challenges the schoolsystem faces in the coming years. Additionally, the Mayor has beeninstrumental in developing after-school programs that now serveyoungsters from Akron’s most impoverished neighborhoods, in 12different locations.Most visibly, Mayor Plusquellic has transformed downtown Akron. Fromluring the National Inventors Hall of Fame to its new child-friendlyheadquarters in Akron, to the construction of a new minor league baseballstadium and a new convention center, downtown Akron has experienceda renaissance in the years of Plusquellic’s leadership.A graduate of Akron's Kenmore High School, Donald Plusquellic attendedthe University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering and graduated fromBowling Green State University School of Business. He earned his JDfrom The University of Akron School of Law.13

BANQUET SPEAKERDR GEOFFREY LANDIS“Exploring Mars”Geoffrey Landis, a nistration’sJohnH.Glenn Research Center as acivil servant in October 2000.He is a member of the scienceteam of the Mars ExplorationRover mission, which is currentlyoperating two rovers, Spirit andOpportunity, which landed onMars in January, 2004. He alsoworked on the 1997 MarsPathfinder mission, and was theprincipal investigator of theMaterials Adherence Experiment used to measure dust deposition on theSojourner rover.Currently, he is working on advanced concepts for space flight. His researchprojects include developing mission concepts for Mars and Venus probes,analyzing the performance of solar power systems for future space missions,investigating the use of space resources, and developing advanced spacepropulsion concepts, such as solar-electric propulsion systems, tethers andlight-sails. He has published over two hundred and fifty scientific papers in thefields of photovoltaics and astronautics. He holds four patents on photovoltaicdevice designs.Previously he was employed by the Ohio Aerospace Institute as a seniorresearcher. He earned his PhD in Physics from Brown University, andundergraduate degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.In his spare time, he is a Hugo- and Nebula-award winning science fictionwriter. His novel Mars Crossing won the Locus award for best first novel. Hismost recent book is the short-story collection Impact Parameter.14
