CONGRATULATIONSCLASS OF2 Faculty of Applied Health Sciences

History of Brock UniversityOpened in 1964, Brock University is named forMajor-General Sir Isaac Brock, who died inbattle at nearby Queenston Heights in theWar of 1812. Brock’s final words were said to have been“Push on, my brave fellows!” A Latin translation of thisis “Surgite!” — which is Brock University’s motto. The seeds of the University were sown long before thedoors first opened. Brock’s story is about a community thatrose up and built the institution it wanted for its future. In the late 1950s, there was growing public discussionabout how Niagara should have its own university. Thegrassroots sentiment became a movement in 1957 whenthe Allanburg Women’s Institute asked the Ontariogovernment to consider opening a university in the region.By fall 1962, the Brock Founders Committee wasincorporated. They received approval to create a newuniversity, then developed an administrative andacademic plan. Then they began raising money. After years of meetings and fundraising, Brockopened in September 1964. It had 127 students ina refurbished refrigeration factory at the foot of theNiagara Escarpment in St. Catharines. In 1966, thelandmark Brock Tower was completed, and Facultiesbegan moving “up the hill” to the University’spermanent home atop the Niagara Escarpment. For the next 30 years, Brock sent thousands ofgraduates on to successful careers. It built a name forits personal quality of teaching afforded by attentivefaculty and controlled class sizes. As the new millenniumdawned, enrolment soared. Brock transformed from anundergraduate institute to a comprehensive Universitywith flourishing research, graduate and doctoral programs. The campus steadily expanded to keep pacewith the demand for a Brock education with theconstruction of world-class research labs, a landmarkfine arts complex, an international students’ centreand a new research and innovation hub.Brock serves its community as a cultural, academicand recreational centre, bringing excellent facilities to thepeople who created the University all those years ago. Weare committed to building our community and fostering anenvironment that serves our students and our neighbours. The modern university is the lineal descendantof the university of the Middle Ages. Itspurposes and organization, even much of itsceremonial role, are medieval in origin.Today’s ceremony stems from the medieval tradition. The procession of the guild of teachers, whose solemnassembly, or Convocation, is the modern equivalent ofthe full congregation of all Faculties, is followed by theChancellor and the Mace, the symbol of the University’scorporate authority. The academic gowns, hoods andcaps declare in their various designs and colours theacademic qualifications of the faculty. The citationsand presentations by the faculty to the Chancellorattest to the Chancellor and to society the degree ofproficiency attained by the students of the University. The Chancellor confers upon the students theappropriate degree. It is the act, not a certificate, which constitutes the validity of the degree bestowed. The statement “I admit you” and the placing of thestudents’ hands within those of the Chancellor and hisassociates, bind the students to the University. Theyreceive what the University has been and what it is today. The graduates are what the University hopes to be.Faculty of Applied Health Sciences 3

The University FlagBeta Gamma SigmaOur flag is the Banner of Arms of the Grant of Arms toBrock University, granted on March 17, 1965. The mainfeature on the flag is a gold-winged eagle with the book oflearning on its breast. Yellow and red are colours associatedwith academic institutions and the eagle was once thoughtto be the bird that flew the highest and was the wisest. The top the flag includes the maple leaf, representingCanada; a trillium representing Ontario and a shell(escallop)-a symbol long associated with the LincolnWelland Regiment and the County of Welland. The flag, donated by the members of Brock’s 1994 Quarter CenturyClub, stands on the stage for each Convocation ceremonyand is flown daily on campus.Beta Gamma Sigma is the honour society serving businessprograms accredited by AACSB International - TheAssociation to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highestrecognition a business student anywhere in the worldcan receive in a business program accredited by AACSBInternational. Brock received accreditation to AACSB in2003, joining top international business schools, and in2004 was admitted into Beta Gamma Sigma.Membership in this honours society is offered only tothe best business and accounting students: undergraduatescompleting third year in the top 10 percent of their classand graduates ranking in the top 10 per cent of theirundergraduate programs or top 20 per cent of theirmaster’s program. The University MaceMaces were originally specialized war clubs, made ofmetal or garnished with metal spikes used by knights orother warriors. This functional weapon evolved into a symbolic emblemof legislative and civic authority used by cities and townsand, ultimately, by parliament. Many universities havedecorated maces as symbols of their corporate identityand authority.Brock was presented with its mace in 1992 as a gift fromthe people of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the birthplace ofMajor-General Sir Isaac Brock. It is made of sterling silver and incorporates theGuernsey seal; the University crest; a crown from theConstable’s baton; flames of learning from the University’scoat of arms, a maple leaf, scallop shell and Trillium flower, which are symbols of the University; and a button from theuniform of Brock’s 49th regiment.A Warm Welcome FromBrock University’s AboriginalEducation CouncilWe at Brock University would like to acknowledge andhonour the ancestors of those on whose traditional landswe gather today. Brock University is located on the sharedlands of the Original Peoples, which became known asthe traditional beaver hunting grounds. The AboriginalEducation Council and Brock University have workedcollaboratively to keep the importance of our sharedhistory, friendship and future relationships in our mindsand hearts. We would like to recognize the successes ofour Indigenous graduates and all those graduating today.4 Faculty of Applied Health SciencesCampus Wide Co-CurriculumThe Campus-Wide Co-Curriculum is a program designedto enhance the Brock student experience through thecompletion of activities and opportunities within 10different co-curricular domains.By completing the Campus-Wide Co-Curriculum,a student has made a meaningful investment in theirholistic development and has demonstrated a significantcommitment to continuous learning and personal growth.Students who complete the program are eligible to beinducted into the Isaac Brock Insignia Circle, a distinguishedsociety of current students and alumni who are highlyengaged in the Brock experience. This distinction is acknowledged by a red cord worn bythe graduand.

Academic RegaliaAcademic regalia at Convocation is steeped in tradition. All participants wear gowns, which are reminiscent of therobes worn by monks or clergy in medieval times. Hoods, worn draped over the shoulders and back, are derivatives ofthe simple coverings worn by people of all classes to keeptheir heads warm in an inhospitable climate. The Chancellor’s gown is made from aegean blue silk andtrimmed with gold lace. It is worn with a round velvet capwith a gold tassel. The Vice-Chancellor’s gown is similar, but trimmed with silver. The University coat-of-arms isembroidered on the front facing of each gown. Honorarydoctors wear gowns made of blue material with goldfacings down the front and on each sleeve.Faculty members wear the academic regalia appropriateto their degrees. Most doctoral gowns are more than onecolour and many have three horizontal bars of velvet oneach sleeve. Hoods signify the degrees and institutionsfrom which they were received. Since Brock has facultywho graduated from scores of different universities, theConvocation procession is dramatic and colourful.Brock’s graduates wear aegean blue gowns and, afterbeing admitted to their degrees, don distinctive hoodswhich identify them as graduates of our University. Madeof scarlet viyella, the hoods are lined with navy blue andgold material. Three bars of navy blue are set against thegold in a manner that suggests a dress uniform that mighthave been worn by General Brock. The edge of each hood is trimmed with velvet in theappropriate colour for the degree: Doctor of PhilosophyBlack With Red Chevrons And Red Velvet Trim Master of Accountancy - Black With Red Trim Master of Arts - Red With White Trim Master of Applied Disability StudiesBlack with Yellow Trim Master of Applied Gerontology – Black with Apricot Trim Master of Business AdministrationBlack With Blue Trim Master of Business Economics - Red With Tan Trim Master of Divinity - Red With Purple Trim Master of Education - Red With Light Blue Trim Master of Professional KinesiologyBlack With Light Sage Green Trim Master of Public Health - Red With Peach Trim Master of Science - Red With Golden Yellow Trim Master of Sustainability - Red with Blue Trim Master of Theological Studies - Red With Royal Blue Trim Bachelor of Accounting - Red With Emerald Green Trim Bachelor of Applied Health – Red with Cream Trim Bachelor of Arts - Red With White Trim Bachelor of Business AdministrationRed With Emerald Green Trim Bachelor of Business Economics - Red With Tan Trim Bachelor of Child Health – Red With Pink Trim Bachelor of Computing And BusinessRed With Grey Flannel Trim Bachelor of Education - Red With Light Blue Trim Bachelor of Early Childhood EducationRed With Delmar Blue Trim Bachelor of KinesiologyBlack With Light Sage Green Trim Bachelor of Music - Red With Pink Trim Bachelor of Physical EducationRed With Olive Green Trim Bachelor of Public Health - Red With Peach Trim Bachelor of Recreation and Leisure StudiesRed With Sage Green Trim Bachelor of Science - Red With Golden Yellow Trim Bachelor of Science In Nursing - Black With Peach Trim Bachelor of Sport ManagementRed With Loden Green Trim Bachelor of Tourism StudiesBlack with Spanish Yellow TrimHonour CordsHonour cords are worn by graduands meeting thefollowing criteria:Graduands who have completed a 20-credit honoursprogram with first-class honours standing, which requiresa minimum 80 per cent average in all major credits and aminimum of 70 per cent in the remaining credits.
