Construction on the 250,000 acre estate beganin 1919, and included two swimming pools, a tennis court, a movie theatre, andthree guest cottages.An avid traveler and collector, the castle also displayed the vast art collectionamassed by Mr. Hearst, including American and European Old Masterpaintings and sculptures, tapestries, oriental rugs, Greek, Roman and Egyptianantiquities, silver, furniture and historic ceilings. Hearst named his new estateLa Cuesta Encantada, Spanish for “Enchanted Hill.” The mansion becamefamous for hosting the Hollywood and political elite of the day, includingCharlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, Winston Churchill, Charles Lindbergh, FranklinRoosevelt, and Joan Crawford. When Hearst left his San Simeon Residence in1947 due to his failing health, the Castle was left unfinished. At the time, it was the second tallestbuilding in Southern California only after Los Angeles City Hall. The building isone of the most significant landmarks in Long Beach and serves as the visualfocal point and entrance to downtown Long Beach. The Villa Riviera wasdeclared a City Landmark in 1979 and placed on the National Registry of HistoricPlaces in 1996. This is the first major restoration project of the building. Thefirst phase is the exterior restoration which began in 2007. The project includedthe remediation of 10 layers of lead based and water based paint, using achemical removal process.The Villa Riviera’s location on the waterfront and proximity to the Downtownmakes it a landmark and icon in the City of Long Beach. Ray is well known in the Restoration community as an “expert”in historic preservation. He served on the Board of Trustees for the CaliforniaPreservation Foundation from 2008 to 2014, while holding memberships inthe Association of Preservation Technology International, the National Trust,Los Angeles Conservancy and the Western Association for Art Conservation.His historic preservation projects have received recognition from the NationalTrust, California Preservation Foundation, Los Angeles Conservancy, Long BeachHeritage and Pasadena Heritage. As a Paralegal, her skills were well suited forthe Construction Industry.Reuben LombardoSenior Preservation Estimator/Project ManagerReuben Lombardo has extensive experience in the preservation field, and is akey team member of Spectra Company’s Historic Division. His areas of expertiseinclude Ornamental Concrete/Plaster, Granite/Marble, Tile/Stone/Ceramics,Historic Murals/Decorative Painting, Sculptures, Mold Making, Wood Restorationand Metals.
