June 24, 2022Dear Colleagues,As most of you know, Creighton successfully completed aCarnegie Foundation pilot application process for a newLeadership for Public Purpose Elective Classification, and we aregrateful to Jennifer Moss Breen Zuzelka, PhD, associateprofessor in the EdD in Interdisciplinary Leadership program, andthe members of the Leadership for Public Purpose ClassificationCommittee for their outstanding work.We were one of only 13 higher education institutions nationally,and the only Jesuit university, to be invited to participate in thepilot application, and one of only eight to complete the applicationprocess and receive individual feedback from the CarnegieFoundation.Going forward, the process requires rigorous self-study toachieve the Carnegie designation, which would elevate Creightonas a national leader in leadership education and development.You can learn more about the process, which will require inputfrom many on campus beginning in the fall, here in a webinar thatDr. Moss Breen Zuzelka recently helped lead. Representativesfrom 27 universities viewed the webinar live and undoubtedlymany more are continuing to view it.If you prefer, you can also gain access to the webinar throughHigherLed, which is the site where the support for the Leadershipfor Public Purpose classification is hosted. You will be requestedto join the HigherLed community to access the information. Wewill be sharing more about this important opportunity for ourUniversity over the coming months.I want to express my gratitude to the Rev. Tom Simonds, SJ, forhis leadership and service as Magis Core director. He will bestepping away from this role, effective June 30, to focus on otherprojects. His work in streamlining the assessment of the core hasbeen especially valuable. In addition, Fr. Simonds has ledsignificant conversations about the ongoing vision and goals forour undergraduate core, in particular with respect to how it canbest embody our Catholic, Jesuit mission.

I am grateful to Dean Keegan and her consultation with Fr.Simonds and Deans Hendrickson and Todero regarding nextsteps. I am delighted to announce that Guy McHendry, PhD,associate professor of communication studies, has accepted theinvitation to serve as interim Magis Core director for the upcomingacademic year. Dr. McHendry is currently the associate directorand served previously as interim director. Discussions regarding apermanent appointment to the position will be initiated early in thefall semester. Please join me in thanking Fr. Simonds for hisservice and in welcoming Dr. McHendry to the role.I want to add my congratulations to Elizabeth Elliot-Meisel, PhD,associate professor of history, on her selection as a FulbrightScholar. This fall she will teach a semester at Trent University,about 70 miles northeast of Toronto.Finally, I would like to echo the sentiments expressed yesterdayby the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, in his messageannouncing Creighton's response to current economic pressures.As Fr. Hendrickson said, all that is great about Creighton isbecause of you, our faculty and staff, and it is my sincere hopethat these measures, including the 1,000 cura payment andadditional floating holiday, help you to have a wonderful summer.The Provost Digest will take a hiatus in July, and resume inAugust. Chris Lowney, vice chair of the CommonSpirit Health board and author of thebook Heroic Leadership, provided a keynote address and book-signing opportunity at the event.Printing Club Visualizes 3D Health CareA medical condition is often an invisible adversary – one beneath the skin, seen only in glimpsescaptured by X-rays or CT scans. But what if you could see your diagnosis in three dimensions?Medical students in the 3D Printing Club on the Phoenix health sciences campus are exploringhow to make this a reality for patients and physicians.Meethil, Others Focus on Faculty DevelopmentArchana Meethil, BDS, MDS, MCSc, Department of Periodontics in the School of Dentistry,along with seven other faculty members from five Creighton colleges and schools, was selectedto participate on faculty development programming for the 2022-2023 academic year. She andher cohort will focus on high impact instructional strategies; experiential learning pedagogies andimpact on student learning and achievement; curricular innovation and/or development;collaborative practices; and/or the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Powers' Paper is PublishedJan Powers, PhD, assistant professor and program director of schoolcounseling in the College of Arts and Sciences, is second author on arecent publication, “ARCCH Model of Resilience: A flexible multisystemicresilience framework.” This conceptual paper is the result of collaborativework by Creighton, the University of Minnesota and the University of Northern Iowa. The ARCCHmodel was conceptualized and used as part of trauma-informed training in schools through theprogram “We Can! Building Resilience and Relationships” published in 2020. The graphic wascreated in collaboration between the research team and marketing specialist Lianna Cornally,Jan Powers’ daughter.Faculty Receive PT Association AwardsTwo physical therapy faculty members recently received prestigious awards from the AmericanPhysical Therapy Association (APTA). Jennifer Furze, PT, DPT, FAPTA, was named a 2022Catherine Worthingham Fellow. This is APTA’s highest honor, awarded to members whosecontributions to the profession through leadership, influence and achievements havedemonstrated frequent and sustained efforts to advance the profession for at least 15 years.Julie Peterson, PT, DPT, received the Lucy Blair Service Award, honoring physical therapistswhose contributions and service to the APTA are of exceptional quality.
