Trinity Clubsand SocietiesSports Centre and Societiesfor a variety of indoor sports. Living in DublinDublin is a thriving capital city and one ofthe most dynamic technology and businesshubs in Europe. Global finance, tech,pharmaceutical multinationals and theenergetic start-ups of Silicon Docks areonly minutes away from Trinity College.LocationDublin is situated in east-central Ireland,with wonderful mountains to the southand a stunning coastline to explore.Many low cost airlines connect Dublin tohundreds of European destinations, all ona student budget. Jet to Paris or London inunder an hour.Dublin is relatively small in size and agreat walking city. You can stroll fromTrinity College to the famous St. Stephen’sDublin has a great literary legacy with manyluminaries of Irish literature such as Joyce,Shaw, Yeats, Wilde, Kavanagh and Beckett, beingassociated with the city. Dublin’s entertainmentsare legendary, from the delights of the GuinnessStorehouse and Temple Bar to more culturednights at the theatre or dining in one of the city’sfine eateries. Known for its welcoming and friendlyculture, it’s no surprise that people from all overGreen in less than 15 /visit-dublinthe world come to enjoy the “craic” in Dublin.13

Getting Around DublinA handy hint if you are trying to locatean address, postal codes are always oddnumbers on the northside and evennumbers on the Southside. As a ruleof thumb, the higher the number, thefurther away the location will be fromthe city centre.The most common transport links forstudents are the bus, train and tram. Allmain transport links navigating to the citycentre will bring you to Trinity college orwithin a short walking distance with theLuas (tram network), opening a Trinitystop from December 2017.Travel Discountswww.studenttravelcard.ieStudents are entitled to reduced fares on buses, tramsand trains under certain circumstances. The studenttravel card costs 12 and can be obtained from theStudent Travel Service office in House 6, Front Square.The Irish Student Travelcard and its Northern Irelandequivalent the Translink student discount card areaccepted on both sides of the border for discountedstudent travel.Leap Cardwww.studentleapcard.ieThe Leap Student Travel Card can be used by studentsas an ID to buy special student travel tickets as wellas to pay-as-you-go for travel in the Dublin area bytopping up with travel credit and using it like a LeapCard. Student Leap Card holders are entitled to someretail and entertainment discounts around Ireland.14

Registration& Tuition Feeswww.tcd.ie/academicregistry/registrationYou will receive an invitation toregister through your My TCD portal inAugust and you will need to completethe online registration process priorto arrival. On completion of onlineregistration, your TCD email address,computer ID (username), and passwordwill be provided via the Intray messagein the portal.Your ID card will be issued to you duringFreshers’ Week as part of the Orientationschedule. It is recommended that youcheck your TCD email account regularlyfor College official communications.Lecture timetables will be available viathe student information portal nearterm time.Fees and ow-to-payLog-in to MyTCD portal to view the balance ofyour fees. The Academic Registry is responsiblefor the invoicing and collection of course feesand other charges. They will also issue severalof the documents you will need to registerwith the immigration bureau and open a bankaccount (if required). The best way to requestdocuments is to call into the Service Deskduring office hours. Documents take 48 hours togenerate after making a request.18

Setting up an Irish Bank AccountThere are several national banks in Ireland.One of them, Bank of Ireland, has facilities oncampus. It is located adjacent to the Atriumunder the Dining Hall. Bank of Ireland hasdedicated student officers who deal withgeneral financial issues. (This is now in theHamilton Building).To open any bank account, you will need toshow valid proof of identity, complete with aphotograph and proof of address. On request,the college can provide a letter confirmingyou are a Trinity student and listing yourhome and Dublin addresses. Once you haveregistered, this letter can be obtained from theAcademic Registry.Alternatively, you can print your letter from theportal (after registration) and then bring it to theAcademic Registry to get it stamped and signedthere and then. There are normally no feescharged on student bank accounts. Please notethat you may have to wait for 2-3 days beforepresenting your letter from them to the bank.Pay to Study Payment Optionwww.tcd.paytostudy.comTrinity partners with ‘Pay to Study’ to allowinternational students to pay from their homecountry in their local currency. The servicealso provides a detailed receipt and helps theStudent Finance team better track paymentsto student numbers than using traditional wiretransfer payments. There is no internationaltransfer charge for using the service. Thisis the recommended method of paymentfor international students, with credit cardpayments as a second preference.19

AccommodationStudent Accommodationuniversity accommodation is available onand off campus. Once you have acceptedyour unconditional offer, you may make your TCDaccommodation application online. If you wouldlike university accommodation, you are advisedto apply as early as possible at www.tcd.ie/accommodation.Privately Rented AccommodationAs Trinity College Dublin cannot support all requests foraccommodation, many students secure off-campusaccommodation. It’s best to consult www.daft.ie forprivate housing opportunities. The Daft website is usuallythe best option for finding good, affordable housing. Itallows you to search by area, price range and a host ofother categories.Top online accommodation resources e20

Temporary AccommodationAccommodation Advisory ServiceIt is helpful for new students, al students, to note that it canbe rather difficult to secure accommodationIf you do not secure university housing or wishin Dublin while outside of the country. Theto find your own accommodation, the Students’Accommodation Office provides the option ofUnion operates an Accommodation Advisory Servicetemporary accommodation on campus beforethroughout August and September.
