Information Required to Get a License FileNIC IDThe NIC ID is a 12-character hexadecimal string embedded in thenetwork interface card that Altera uses to uniquely identify the PC wherethe software is installed.The NIC ID is required for network licenses when the license servermachine is a PC. It is also required for PC software provided forevaluation. Find the NIC ID using one of the following methods: Microsoft Windows: Type ipconfig /all r at a commandprompt. The NIC ID is the physical address without the dashes. Ifyour PC has more than one network card, you can use any of thecards’ NIC IDs as long as the selected network card is alwaysconnected to the computer. See Figure 4.Figure 4. Altera Software Licensing For Linux, at a command prompt type: /sbin/ifconfig eth0 r.The NIC ID is the ID to the right of HWaddr, without the colons. Forexample, 2234BAC721. See Figure 5.Figure 5. Altera Software LicensingHard-Disk Serial NumberThe hard-disk serial number is an eight-character hexadecimal ID thatidentifies the PC with the Altera license. Find the hard-disk serial numberfor the PC by any of the following methods. Ensure that the ID is eightcharacters long: include a leading zero if necessary. For PCs running the Microsoft Windows operating system, type volat a command prompt regardless of where the Windows operatingsystem is installed. Information Required to Get a License File If the Quartus II software is installed, on the Tools menu, clickLicense Setup. This method ensures use of the correct hard-diskserial number if multiple hard drives are in use. See Figure 10.Figure 10. This methodensures use of the correct hard-disk serial number if multiple harddrives are in use.13

The license file is sent to you as anemail attachment. When you receive the attachment, set it up byfollowing the steps described in “Set Up the License” on page 16.To view information about software licensed to you and request licensefiles, you can log onto the mySupport section of the Altera website atwww.altera.com/mysupport.Automatic License File RequestYou can request a license file automatically with the latest versions of theQuartus II and Quartus II Web Edition software.11.14If you have a floating license, you must manually request alicense file from the License Center on Altera’s website. Use the followingprocedure to add a new license feature to an existing Altera license file:1.Close any software programs provided by Altera.2.Open the new IP or development kit license file in a text editor. Thefile should contain one or more lines starting with the keywordFEATURE or INCREMENT.3.Open the existing Altera license.dat file in a text editor.4.Copy the FEATURE or INCREMENT line(s) from the IP ordevelopment kit license file and paste the text into the existingAltera license.dat file.c5.116Do not delete any FEATURE or INCREMENT lines from theexisting Altera license file. Set Up the License6.Go to “Set Up the License” on page 16 for instructions on how to setup the Altera license.FIXEDPC (Software Guard) LicenseTo set up a FIXEDPC license, perform the following steps:1.Make a backup copy of any existing license.dat file for reference.2.Save the new license.dat file on your computer's hard drive. Alterarecommends saving and using the license.dat file attached to theemail. If you cannot receive email attachments, the email includesinstructions on how to create a license.dat file.3.Attach the software guard to a parallel or USB port on the PC.The Sentinel driver for software guard-based licensing is installedautomatically with the Quartus II and MAX PLUS II software. PCsrunning Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows NT, or Windows2000 require that you install the Sentinel driver.1Quartus II software versions 6.0 and later do not supportWindows NT operating system. Refer tohttp://www.altera.com/support/software/os support/ossindex.html for updated operating system support.Installing the Sentinel driver requires administrator privileges. If youare not logged on as an administrator, or if you do not haveadministrator privileges when the Quartus II or MAX PLUS IIsoftware is installed, you must manually install the Sentinel driversonce you are logged into the PC as an administrator or grantedsimilar permissions. Disk drives can destroy a software guardby drawing more power than the guard is capable of handling.Disconnect the software guard before using the parallel port totransfer data between computers using a data-transfer program.Failure to do so can cause damage to the software guard.4.Specify the license location. The license location is path to licensefile \license.dat, where path to license file is the full directory pathto the license file, starting with the drive letter. For example,D:\flexlm\license.dat.The license is now set up and you can begin using the software.Floating Network Licenses (FLOATALL, FLOATPC, FLOATNET,FLOATLNX)This section describes how to determine the license file location for afloating license. Set Up the LicenseIf a port is not listed in the license.dat file, specify port @ hostname .2.Proceed to “Using LM LICENSE FILE System EnvironmentVariable” on page 20.Licenses for No-Cost Evaluation PC SoftwareAltera offers no-cost evaluation PC software that includes the Quartus IIWeb Edition software, ModelSim-Altera Web Edition, and MAX PLUS IIBASELINE.fRefer to “Licensing Options” on page 1 for more information.To set up a no-cost evaluation PC software license, perform the followingsteps:Altera Corporation1.Make a backup copy of any existing license.dat file for reference.2.Save the new license.dat file on your computer’s hard drive. This variablealso sets Quartus II and MAX PLUS II software licenses. Alterarecommends using this method for specifying the license location.120The license file specification in the Quartus II or MAX PLUS IILicense Setup dialog box takes precedence over theLM LICENSE FILE environment variable setting for thatparticular software.Altera Corporation

If in doubt, verify thefilename at a command prompt.A carriage return (new line) is present at the end of the lastFEATURE line.Ensure that any FEATURE line that wraps to a second or thirdline contains a backslash (\) at the end of each line to indicatethat it continues.Ensure that there is no backslash (\) at the end of the lines if theVENDOR STRING line wraps to multiple lines. This is differentfrom FEATURE line. The backslash (\) should only be addedoutside of the line where the double quotes (") are located.
