1. History and CharacteristicsFounded in 1770, the College of Charleston is a state-supported comprehensive institution thatprovides education in the arts and sciences, education and business. With the main campuslocated in the heart of historic Charleston, the College strives to meet the growing educationaldemands primarily of the Lowcountry and the State of South Carolina and, secondarily, of thesoutheast United States. Consistent with its heritage, a liberal arts undergraduate curriculum iscentral to the mission of the College. In addition to offering a broad range of baccalaureatedegree programs, the College also provides a range of master's degree programs that arecompatible with the needs of the community and the State. A recent change in the College’smission would allow for a limited number of doctoral degrees should location and need warrant.The College of Charleston serves a student body from its geographical area and also recruitsstudents from national and international communities. The College seeks applicants capable ofsuccessfully completing degree requirements and students who excel academically. Totalheadcount enrollment in fall 2015 was 11,946 including 9,590 full-time undergraduate; 288 fulltime graduate; 878 part-time undergraduate; 775 part-time graduate; and 415 students enrolled innon-credit courses. Eight schools (School of the Arts; School of Business; School of Education,Health, and Human Performance; School of Humanities and Social Sciences; School ofLanguages, Cultures, and World Affairs; and School of Science and Mathematics; GraduateSchool of University of Charleston, South Carolina (UCSC)) report to the Executive VicePresident and Provost, as does the Honors College. Off-campus locations under the direction ofthe College include College of Charleston North Campus; Lowcountry Graduate Center; GriceMarine Laboratory; 701 East Bay Street; and La Rochelle, France.The College of Charleston peer list includes Appalachian State, Elon University, James MadisonUniversity, University of Mary Washington, University of North Carolina Wilmington, andUniversity of Tampa.
