PATTERSON-KELLEY’SFULLY PACKAGED HEATERIn'the late 1950s, Patterson-Kelleydeveloped the first line of completelypackaged commercial-industrial waterheaters. The P-K COMPACT semiinstantaneous water heater was part ofthat new concept when it was introducedback then. Over the years, improvementsto the heater’s design have representeda continuing evolution of the originalconcept. The P-K COMPACT has alwaysbeen completely assembled at our facilityand, since it requires only four pipingconnections, is shipped ready foreasy installation.HISTORY OF PERFORMANCEP-K COMPACT water heaters have performed reliably, providinglong, trouble-free operation in thousands of installations in all typesof commercial, institutional and industrial buildings as well as onNavy ships. Its present design, which focuses on a small heater thatproduces high hot water output at a closely controlled temperature, makes it the ideal water heater for any building owner.HIGH-OUTPUT HEATEROperating on steam, boiler water or high-temperature water, the P-K COMPACT produces up to 250 gpm at 40 F to 140 F.Though the largest unit has a footprint of only 8 sq. ft., the heatercan handle any building’s water heating requirements, either singlyor via multiple-unit installation.PRECISE TEMPERATURE CONTROLThe heater features P-K’s unique Anticipator control, whichcontinuously meters heating medium demand to exact proportionsof hot water requirements and regulates the hot water outlettemperature to a close tolerance of 4 F of set point, even withsudden fluctuating draws.PREVENTS SCALEConstantly pumped circulation prevents scale formation andaccumulation of foreign matter on the heating surfaces in mostwater conditions (water softening may be required with extremelyhard water). The constant circulation also continually monitorswater temperature, stabilizing temperature control at all draw rates.CONSTRUCTED FOR LONG SERVICE LIFEThe P-K COMPACT is built to last. Potable water in the shellcontacts only nonferrous materials, preventing rusty water, Theshell is constructed of solid 90-10 copper nickel, the premiumcorrosion-resistant material for potable water service. Standardheat exchanger construction is copper tubing, which will handlemost water conditions. Copper nickel is available for unusualwater conditions.

THE P-K GUARANTEEPatterson-Kelley guarantees thateach P-K COMPACT water heater willperform at the rated capacity. P-KCOMPACT capacity tables are basedon data developed by Heat Transferand Fluid Flow Service of AtomicEnergy of Canada. Ltd. The waterTEMPERATURE-LIMIT SYSTEMThe P-K COMPACT water heater is protected by a doublesolenoid temperature-limit system with a hot water dump valve.Should any overheating ot water occur, the lemperature-limit systemimmediately kicks in to shut off the heat source and dump overheatedwater into the dram. The valve controlling the heat source shuts offuntil normal hot water temperature is restored; the unit then assumesnormal operating conditions. Optional alarm and/or dry contact relayis available for remote service.NO OVERHEAD CLEARANCEThe P-K COMPACT is the easiest to service of the semiinstantaneous water heaters on the market today. The shellalways remains in place, so no overhead clearance is requiredfor service. The tubesheets have drilled and tapped bolt holes forindependent bolting, enabling the bonnet to be removed withoutbreaking the domestic water gaskets. If a tube were to leak, itcould easily be plugged off as a temporary fix and the unit putback into service within an hour. The steam or water chamberis easily removed without disturbing the piping to the unit, andthere is ready access to the lube bundle.DOUBLE WALL DESIGNThe P-K COMPACT is also available with a vented double-walltube bundle with double tubesheets. This design offers the ultimateprotection against cross-contamination of potable water and meetsboth health department and building codes. The P-K double-wall tubedesign creates maximum contact between inner and outer tubes toproduce effective heat transfer, while providing a vented leak pathas a visual means to indicate tube failure. The double-wall heatexchanger can be installed in any existing P-K COMPACT waterheater originally supplied with single-wail tubing. Contact thefactory or your local P-K representative to obtain furtherinformation, including the new rating.A.S.M.E. CONSTRUCTIONThe P-K COMPACT water heater is constructed in accordance withA.S.M.E. Code, Section VIII, Div. 1, and comes with an insurancecompany certificate of inspection and test.heater's capacities have been verifiedby Chalk River Nuclear Laborarories.Chalk River. Ontario, using an actualproduction unit. This is your assuranceof the water heater's performance. We also guarantee that ail materials, components and workmanship in theconstruction of each heater are of thehighest quality. If any part shouldprove defective within one year afterstart-up, a new part will be suppliedwithout charge, provided the waterheater is started within six monthsfrom the date of shipment.THE EXTENDED,NON-PRORATED GUARANTEESThe following componentscarry an extended, unconditional,non-prorated guarantee, included inthe submittal:Tube Bundle10-year guarantee againstfailure caused by thermal shock, mechanical failure or erosionPressure Vessel20-year guarantee against leakageAnticipator- Temperature Control20-year guarantee againstany failure

ANTICIPATOR5 CONTROL SYSTEMPRODUCES CLOSE TEMPERATURE CONTROLThe P-K COMPACT features theAnticipator- integral control systemwhich meters the heating mediumdemand to exact proportions of hotwater requirements and regulates hotwater outlet temperature to a dosetolerance of 4 f from the setpoint. This schematic shows the generalarrangement of the P-K COMPACT.Steam passes through the tubes ofthe heat exchanger bundle. The wateris rapidly heated as it is directed overthe tubes by segmental baffles insidea cylindrical wrapper. Above thewrapped tube bundle, minimumstorage volume is provided to give thecontrols sufficient time to produce theciose temperature control.4

FEATURES/BENEFITS OF THE P-K COMPACT WATER HEATER High-quality design and construction assure reliable performance and long service life. A complete package with only four piping connections enables quick, easy installation. Compact design saves valuable floor space and fits easily into position. High-capacity output: Up to 250 gpm at 40 F to 140 F allows the heater to meet thehot water requirements of any building. Performs equally welt with steam, boiler water or high-temperature water. Anticipator temperature control regulates hot water outlet temperatures 4SF. Constant circulation by the pump prevents scale formation and improves temperature control. All nonferrous construction on the water side prevents rusty water. Tube bundle drops downward from the heater, so no overhead room is required for service. Double solenoid temperature-limit system prevents overheated water from entering thedistribution system. Design meets seismic-restraint requirements, making it earthquake resistant. Built to A.S.M.E. standards; meets code requirements, Double-wall design available; meets B.O.C.A. and I.A.P.M.O. code requirements. Heat-transfer rates verified by independent testing agency, assuring that the heaterwill perform at rated capacity.(QCOMPACT

Any variation of these standard temperatures will affectthe hot water consumption. Therefore, the required gpm is: 75 x .71 54 gpm from 70 F to 140f'F.Your heater selection would be size PK06S, which has a rating of55 gpm from 70 F to 140 F. In most cases, the heater will operate at140 F and a mixed temperature of 100 F is satisfactory; however, the cold water supply may vary from job to job.To determine the effect on the size of the P-K COMPACT, use thefollowing procedure:1, Determine heater size from instructions above,2. Multiply the gpm rating by the correction factor from thefollowing formula:.i M —40 Correction FactorH-C100Where: M mixed temperature at fixture, C cold water temperatureand H hot water temperature from heater.% HOT FORMULAFor example, if the heater determined above has a rating of 75 gpm from40 F to 140“F and the actual cold water temperature is 70 F:The percentage of hot water for any application can be determined fromthe formula:100 TO i 100 — 40 140-170100.71Correction factorCorrection Factor tor Cold Water TemperaturesTemperature - Cold Water Supply, F40506070Correction Factor*1.00.93.83.71’Based on HOT water Irom the heater and 100 F mixed at fixtureM C x 100-%HotH-CSHOWER APPLICATIONSSpecial consideration should be given to applications involving periodic use of gang showers, such as may occur in field houses, gymnasiums, factories, institutions, YMCAs, etc. Use the following procedure: Multiply the number of shower heads by the hot water consumption rate in gpm. This gives the totalgpm hot water draw rate. The maximum gpm of hot water may be modified in accordance with Correction Factor for Water Temperature Variations.6
