Wayside Signaling SystemsRSE-1E2Rev. 2-20EasyRail MaintainerEasyRail Maintainer revolutionizes the real-timemaintenance of MicroLok II systems spreadacross an entire transit operation or railroadterritory. This Hitachi Rail STS USA softwareproduct enables signaling personnel to observeand run automated diagnostics on MicroLok IIunits in multiple domains, from the macro signalsystem level down to the PCB level. NetworkedMicroLok II systems, racks, cardfiles and boardsare shown on high-fidelity graphic displaysfamiliar to any engineer or maintainer. In addition,EasyRail Maintainer provides access to signalsystem operations in a track plan view similar to aLocal Control Panel, and also shows failures ofcommunications links. Further, the softwareextracts and displays tabular data from eachMicroLok II unit’s Application logic, event log anderror log. All of this can be done from distributedor centralized maintenance workstations (mobileor fixed). The advantages of EasyRail Maintainer areobvious. If a MicroLok II-controlled signal systemsuffers an apparent failure, personnel can isolatethe faulty rack, cardfile or PCB before sendingfield maintainers to one or multiple field sites insearch of the problem. Importantly, the softwarehelps narrow down the nature of the failure (PCB,Application software, comms), suggest the typesof repairs or adjustments needed. EasyRailMaintainer can even distinguish between asoftware failure (Application) from a hardwarefailure (e.g. communications). This approach (a)yields game-changing cost reductions, (b) relievesthe maintainer of troubleshooting in the field, and(c) reduces MicroLok II downtime effectively tozero.DescriptionEasyRail Maintainer is one of several related HumanMachine Interface (HMI) products, which also includes“Event Recorder” (see RSE-1E3) and “Local ControlPanel” (RSE-1E4). Figure 1 shows the overallEasyRail hardware/software concept for theseservices, which also include a “Core” platform, varioushardware components and interfaces. For additional information, contact Hitachi Rail STS USA.The Core consists of a PC programmed with EasyRailsoftware running on the Linux operating system, withinterfaces to MicroLok II, the Maintainer HMI and thecentral maintenance system. In turn, the MaintainerHMI incorporates Data Storage and interface to theuser’s maintenance terminal. Each PC programmed with EasyRail Maintainer isactively interfaced to the MicroLok II units over aEthernet communication interface that is separatefrom the existing signaling communications network. This software reaches into each unit to obtainoperating data and observe faults. No changes arerequired to the field MicroLok II units to accommodatethis software and all transactions are passwordprotected.Hitachi Rail STS USA customizes the software toeach railway’s unique configuration of hardware, software and interfaces. The EasyRail Maintainersoftware is comprised of six basic applications:sts.hitiachirail.comRSE-1E2, p. 1

EasyRail Maintainer Basic ConceptDescription (cont’d) Equipment Room Display: Shows the customer’sspecific configuration of MicroLok II racks, forexample redundant cardfiles in a warm or hotstandby configuration, or as a single cardfile. Inthe event of an apparent hardware fault, theaffected cardfile will be highlighted as shown inFigure 2. Cardfile Display: Shows the customer’s specificconfiguration of MicroLok II boards in each cardfile. As shown in Figure 3, a potentially faulty board ishighlighted and the real-time state of front panelLEDs is shown. This includes CPU board LEDswhich many indicate a failure condition. Board Display: Shows various types of data (partnumber, time in service, etc.) of the failed boardobserved in the cardfile display (see Figure 4.) Communications Display: Shows the state of theEthernet communications network linking theMicroLok II units, as well as network managementdevices such as Ethernet switches (see Figure 5).In addition, the display labels the individualcommunications lines to help technicians trace andisolate any faulty lines.RSE-1E2, p. 2 Track Plan Display: Shows the customer’s specificconfigurations of tracks (mainline and interlocking),track circuit blocks, signals and switches in afamiliar dispatch office format (see Figure 6).EasyRail Maintainer translates the MicroLok II I/Oin real time to show, for example:‐‐‐‐‐‐‐Switch IndicationsTrack circuit occupancy indicationsSignal indicationsTraffic indicationsNext Train and Clear Destination indicationsTemporary speed restriction IndicationTerminal indicationApplication Display: Shows multiple forms ofinformation copied from each MicroLok II unit’sApplication software, including:‐ Total system application view‐ Run-Time application monitoring‐ Application logging‐ System Events‐ System Errors‐ User Data LogFigures 7 through 10 show typical displays for each.Note: EasyRail Maintainer cannot be used toremotely modify the Application or Executive softwarein the MicroLok II units. This can only be done with anonsite PC using the “Tools” program in the MicroLok IIDevelopment system software.

Easily customized to each railway’s uniquesignaling system and configuration of MicroLok IIunits. Reduces number (and associated costs) of fieldservice visits to MicroLok II field sites to performtroubleshooting. Provides remote diagnosis of failures, narrowsdown possible failure modes in advance. Differentiates MicroLok II component failures fromexternal communications failures. Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) simplify andexpedite Maintainer tasks. Shows operating status and faults from the totalsystem perspective down to individual PCBs, I/Ochannels and communications lines. Shows familiar, high-fidelity graphicrepresentations of MicroLok II racks, cardfiles andboards. Displays detailed tabular data from each unit’sApplication software parameters and event/errorlogs. Runs on any standard industrial PC with Windows.Additional Information EasyRail Maintainer is designed and programmedat Hitachi Rail STS USA for each customer andproject.
