Honours inBiochemistry and in 1999 with a PhD in Biochemistry from theNational University of Ireland Galway.Dr Fionnuala KeaneManager,HRB NCTOFrom Oct 1999 to Feb 2001 Fionnuala worked as a PostdoctoralResearch Fellow in molecular biology and neurochemistry at theDepartment of Biochemistry, UCD. She joined Novartis IrelandLtd in Feb 2001 and worked there as a Central Nervous SystemHospital Specialist with the sales and marketing team until June2003. At this point Fionnuala joined ICORG, the All-Ireland Cooperative Oncology Research Group and she remained in ICORGfrom July 2003 to May 2014.Fionnuala was appointed to the role of Development Leadfor the HRB CRCI in May 2014 to develop a 5-year businessplan in line with the HRB strategic objectives, working in closecollaboration with the CRF/C directors.Following a successful funding application for the developmentand delivery of HRB CRCI, Fionnuala then served as its ChiefOperating Officer from May 2015 to April 2021 to the end of itsfunding award. From May to July 2021 Fionnuala worked as aProject Manager with UCC on the EU Response and WHO Covid19 trials for Ireland.In August 2021, after a successful funding application bythe Host Institution, UCC, for the new HRB National ClinicalTrials Office (NCTO), Fionnuala was appointed as Managerof the NCTO to lead the team on its programme of work as acentral point of contact for Clinical Research in Ireland and shecontinues in this role to date.Page 8Clinical Research in Ireland 2022

BiographiesEoghan de Barra received his medical degree from the RoyalCollege of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin and proceeded to gainspecialist training in Infectious Diseases and General Medicine inIreland and South Africa.Dr Eoghan de Barra,Beaumont HospitalIn 2011 he took a post as Research Fellow and Lecturer in thedepartment of Tropical Medicine and International Health at theRCSI and conducted malaria vaccine research work in Dublin andat the University of Oxford, UK.In 2014 he took up a post at Imperial College NHS Trust, Londonas a Consultant in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine, where he was the clinical lead for the OPAT programme,a site lead for Neuro-Infection, a regional lead for TB includinglarge numbers of MDR TB and led the Trust’s Ebola response, aswell as directing and advising Infection Prevention and Controlpractitioners as part of an integrated Clinical Infection unit. Heserved as a supervisor for joint Microbiology, Virology, InfectiousDiseases and General Medicine trainees on RCPath and JRCPTBschemes, and for Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Pharmacistindependent prescribing candidates.In 2017 he returned to Dublin taking up a post as Consultant inInfectious Diseases and Senior Lecturer at Beaumont Hospital/ RCSI. Research interests include Tropical Medicine, vaccinedevelopment, TB, resource limited acute care, OPAT and antimicrobial prescribingDr Ruben Keane has over 20 years’ experience of ClinicalResearch in a variety of settings including Pharmaceutical(Marion Merrell Dow, France), Contract Research Organisations(ICON and Quintiles, Dublin) and Academic settings (TrinityCollege Dublin and University College Cork).Dr Ruben Keane,NCTO QRAMRuben’s qualifications include BSc, PhD, H. Dip. Appl. Psych, andMSc Pharmaceutical Medicine.
