Here we are halfway through theyear and being able to play our wonderful game of golf in reasonably goodweather for a change! It’s great to see so many of you out on the courseenjoying the sunshine and fresh air, as well as keeping fit and healthy. Let’senjoy this weather while we can!I’d like to welcome two (2) new women members to Waratah Golf Club(WGC) and they are Marilyn Frost, who hails from Belmont Golf Club and hasplayed at Waratah for a number of years, particularly the past few yearsduring Covid. Lovely to have her playing here with us. Kim Valentine has alsojust recently joined WGC as a 6-day playing member and, on behalf of thewomen members, I would like to welcome both ladies to our wonderful Cluband we hope to see you each week on the course with the other womenmembers, as well as the men, enjoying your golf. It’s also great to seeLechelle Simmons, our Functions Supervisor, playing golf now. Lechellejoined earlier this year and, no doubt, will be playing with her sister, MindySimmons, when she can get out on the course and not working in the Bistro.Enjoy Lechelle!COVID-19 Update FYI: With two new sub-variants of the Covid-19 Omicronvirus known as BA.4 and BA.5 breaking out in the US, scientists have warnedthat the new sub-variants are more contagious forms of Covid-19 thatcould escape immunity from past infections and vaccinations, causingbreakthrough infections. Both sub-types have also spread rapidly across theworld, with the World Health Organization (WHO) in May blaming the newsub-variants for a rise in cases in over 50 countries. 9News reported that “thenew sub-variants of Omicron have been detected in two Australian states.South Australia has reported cases of the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron strain ininternational travellers while Victoria detected the BA.2.12.1 variant in awastewater catchment. The BA.4 and BA.5 strains have not previously beenreported in Australia.” South Australia's Chief Public Health Officer, ProfessorNicola Spurrier, said health authorities are monitoring the transmissibility andseverity of the new variants ‘very closely but it’s too early to tell howtransmissible they are.” It seems that we will have to continue being vigilantregarding this virus and its sub-variants. When will Covid ever END?!In three (3) months’ time, we will be conducting our Annual General Meetingon Tuesday, 25 October, after presentation of the day’s play. I’m mentioningthis now, as there will be a few positions made vacant on our Women’sCommittee that will be open for 2023. I’m seeking anyone who would beinterested in being a Committee Member, so please don’t hesitate to comeand see me if you’d like to be on a fabulous team who organize all thewomen’s events and efficiently run the women’s side of the business at theClub. I’d be happy to talk to you. Don’t be surprised if I approach membersin the next couple of months!! It is critical that we have a Women’sCommittee, otherwise there will be no fun events; no Tuesday comp for1456 Lake Road, ArgentonPhone: (02) 49581847Official web site: www.waratahgolfclub.com.au

D O W N THEFAIRWAYSJULY 2022PRESIDENT’S PEN cont. .Women and therefore no division prizes each week; no Presentation Night for the ladies; no women’s AGM. Everythingwould be run by the Proshop and you would be competing against the men. So we don’t want that happening! Pleaseseriously consider being a part of a great team.As I write this report at the end of June, we will be having our annual Charity Day on Tuesday, 28 June, supporting“NOVA for Women and Children” – a great charity that endeavours to assist and support those women and childrenaffected by domestic and/or family violence in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area. We have many donationsalready for the “NOVA Hub” (right-hand side corner of the Club’s entry, with large containers), which include a range ofgoods to help these desperately unfortunate people in need of support, particularly during the Winter months. I’m surethe women of WGC and the District Clubs playing on Charity Day supporting NOVA know that a little kindness goes along way. So thank you ladies in advance for making 28 June a special day.On Tuesday, 21 June’s Presentation, I read a lovely letter from Janice (aka Jan) Baldwin, who has resigned as a playingmember of Waratah Golf Club after almost 40 years. Jan was on a few Women’s Committees and had the privilege ofbeing the Women’s President from 2008-2010 and part of 2014, which she enjoyed. We’re sorry to see Jan leave theClub and playing with her many friends, but alas, Lawn Bowls has taken her away from us and, I might add, Jan has takenthat sport up with gusto! She thoroughly enjoys it. Our best wishes go with you, Jan, and we hope you will pop inoccasionally for a visit as a Club Member to see the girls when you’re not playing bowls.I’d like to end this report with a quote from the great Arnold Palmer:“Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the sametime rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.”Be happy, be safe, stay well. Awesome golfing everyone for the month of July!Jenny Quist – Women’s PresidentCAPTAIN’S CORNERIt seems like a miracle but we have finally been able to complete a whole month of our programme, even if itwas a little damp for Charity Day. We also were able to complete the Singles Knockout and congratulations toeveryone who took part in the event.Singles KnockoutDiv. 1 Winner:Jan GilliesRunner Up - Renay RobertsonDiv. 2 Winner:Donna DrakeRunner Up - Ros SpainMonthly Medal - Jo Brown (77 Nett)Monthly Scratch - Div. 1 Deb Plummer (97).Div. 2 Jo Brown (101)Div. 3 Ledene Israel (115)Charity Day was held on 28th June and although the day started out quite nice the persistent rain throughoutthe day was very challenging. We had 82 players which was considerably down on other years but given theevent had to be rescheduled it was still a good day. We will keep our fingers crossed that we can go aheadwith our 4 Person Ambrose on 5th July, where we have invited the Clinic Ladies to join us. They are so keenbut the forecast is not looking good. With a field of 82 players, from WGC and variousclubs throughout the district, the day commenced with a shot gun start. Recipients for this year were NOVAfor Women and Children. NOVA supports women, (with or without children) in Lake Macquarie and theWestern suburbs of Newcastle, who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or escaping domestic or familyviolence. A worthwhile charity to support.WinnersPostcardMichael and I had a great trip to London, went to FA Cup finalat Wembley what a fantastic experience. D O W N THEFAIRWAYSJULY 2022KNOW the RULESWhere Preferred Lies AppliesFirst, let's define what preferred lies are. Preferred Lies (or Winter Rules) is a local rule that may be adoptedby the committee in charge of a course when adverse conditions are so apparent throughout a course thatimproving the lie of the ball in a specified way would promote fair play and help protect the turf.Only where a local rule or condition of competition is in place and golfers are informed of such. (Ideally, somekind of sign is posted so golfers know specifically how far they are allowed to move a ball.)The Lift, Clean and Place ProcedureThe phrase "lift, clean and place" really tells you all you need to know about the proper procedure for movinga ball under the condition of the preferred lie: You must not bump it, roll it, foot wedge it, toss it or pick up the ball and drop it. You must mark the ball's original position before lifting. Use a ball marker, a tee, whatever. You are allowed to clean the ball after lifting. (Pervasive mud on the course is one of the mostcommon reasons for implementing preferred lies.) After cleaning, you must place the ball—again, no bumping, rolling, kicking, tossing, etc.—on a spotwithin the distance specified by the local rule in effect. The specimen local rule is printed in the rule book and on the USGA and R&A websites in Appendix I to theRules of Golf, Section 3-b.Can you take Relief from Rough to Fairway? You also could go from the rough to the fairway if you follow these same guidelines and if the designateddistance allowed reaches that far. It doesn't always work in your favour, but don't assume if your ball is in therough, you have to drop in the rough. Golfers are entitled to a club-length relief from a sprinkler head orother abnormal conditions.Free Drop OR PenaltyQ:A free drop rule will apply if all players agree to where the ball landed but due to conditions unable tofind.a)There is NO free drop for a lost ball. The player may either go back to where the ball was hit from andadd a one stroke penalty; OR drop a ball back on the fairway from roughly the position where the ball is lostand add a two stroke penalty; this is the best option to keep Pace of Play.RECENT DILEMMASTROKE Round – A Player thinking she was out of shots (per Stableford) picked up her ball, walked from thegreen. Is she:a)Disqualifiedb)Write 10 on her scorecardAnswer:a)Disqualified as it is a Stroke round and she had walked off the green.HOWEVER - Whilst on the green, Player realises her mistake after picking up the ball, replaces the ball andputts out.a)Does she incur a one stroke penalty?b)DisqualifiedAnswer:a)Player incurs a one stroke penalty and score is counted.NOTE: Waratah Ladies have adopted the local rule which allows a player to pick up their ball on a strokeround ONCE they have played 10 shots. However in choosing this option it will disqualify the player from anyputting competition on the day.Waratah Women Members’ Newsletter5456 Lake Road, ArgentonPhone: (02) 4958 1847Official web site: www.waratahgolfclub.com.au
