Interestingly, evidence for aninternal trackway was recorded within the series of bedding trenches. A large medieval ridge andfurrow cultivation, and two post-medieval sunken featured buildings were also revealed. Themedieval/post-medieval ditch was probably related to an enclosure to the south. The two sunkenfeatures building were unusual, being of a building type that was largely obsolete by the post-medievalperiod. Comparison with other known examples suggests they were probably used for a specific type ofactivity , such as weaving or cheese-making. Archaeological Investigations Project 2006Post-determination and ResearchSouth EastAn archaeological watching brief was maintained on groundwork associated with the construction of aprivate manege to the west of Old Mill Cottage, Oldlands Hill, Fairwarp. Just one large, irregularlyshaped feature of proposed natural origin was revealed during the project. This cut possessed amaximum recorded width of c.8.5m and a depth of at least 1.10m and may have represented an ancientwatercourse. Twenty-seven sherds of pottery dating to the 1st-2nd century AD were gleaned from thefieldwork. However, the monitored groundwork failed to expose a single archaeological contextassociated categorically with a Romano-British iron smelting complex once located in the vicinity. This was perhaps less surprising if one considers that much of the latter site was “almost completelydestroyed, early last century (the 19th century), when the vast slag heaps were used as a source of roadmaking material” (Tebbutt and Tebbutt 1982, 12). Numerous iron slag nodules, a smaller number ofburnt clay fragments and two sherds of post-medieval pottery were also documented.
