Annual Report FY20202021Preventing homelessnessand hunger in our localcommunity since 1970

Executive Director’s CornerDear Friends,The past year was a time of greatchallenges and great change for all ofus. Operating under pandemic conditions, ourstaff helped a record number of our neighbors—and our generous community raised millions ofdollars in new emergency funds to do so. Everyday, the Sunnyvale Community Services (SCS)team worked miracles, keeping our programs andservices operating out of our cramped Kifer Roadsite and helping local residents remain housedwith food on their tables. While our staff worked overtime to provideemergency rental assistance, food, and casemanagement, we were also renovating a newlarger facility so that we would have the spaceto meet the ever-growing need for our services. In our role as a hub for safety-net services, wehave worked hand in hand with partner agenciesthroughout the region to assist thousands ofresidents. The steadfast support of our community made itpossible for us to serve a record number of 10,492low-income individuals in fiscal year 2020-21. Italso enabled us to raise 15 million by June 30thtoward the 20 million needed for the purchaseand renovation of our new building.COVID-19 caused thousands of local residentsto lose their jobs, with many asking for helpfor the first time in their lives. In one year, SCShelped a record 6,843 individuals pay their rent orother urgent financial needs, providing a total of 3,682,110 in financial assistance. We distributedmore than one million pounds of food, equalingnearly 900,000 meals.Every day, we treat every person who comes toSCS with dignity and respect. We have met thepast year’s extraordinary need with your generoussupport. We wish you good health in the comingyear! We continued our vital safety programs and servicesduring the pandemic, constantly innovating asCOVID-19 protocols shifted. During these challengingtimes, our supporters enabled us to keep serving ourneighbors in need with compassion, effectiveness, andefficiency.p Former mayor Melinda Hamilton bags groceries for our low-incomeneighbors.p SCS staffers Jesse Apodaca and Manny Natareno sort food todistribute to Sunnyvale residents. In gratitude,Marie BernardExecutive DirectorAbout SCSOur vision is acommunity whereeveryone has ahome with food onthe table.HIGHLIGHTS Fiscal Year 2020-21Founded in 1970, Sunnyvale CommunityServices (SCS) is an independent nonprofitagency serving low-income residents ofSunnyvale. Building for the FutureWhile fiscal year 2020-21 had us racing to meetthe immediate needs of our community, it wasalso a time of planning, positioning, and strengtheningfor the future. We launched our strategic planning process, whichimmediately confirmed our commitment to keepingour work tightly mission focused; strengthening theorganization through staff development, successionplanning, and inclusive and equitable operationalpractices; and building a diverse team that can bringvarying perspectives to inform and improve our work. Our most significant investment in our future wasthe design and remodel of our Kern Avenue facility. We began the year working with architects and planners, while raising funds to support the purchaseand remodel. The pandemic put a temporary halt toour capital campaign fundraising efforts, but our newbuilding could not wait—the community’s need for ourvital safety-net services had outstripped the capacity ofour old building years before. So, we forged ahead withthe help of some early major supporters, and by June2021, we had raised 15 million toward our campaigngoal of 20 million. 1,000,000 The Applied Materials FoundationCity of SunnyvaleLynn & Bill CraneGoogle.orgLinkedIn CorporationJay Paulp SCS Project Manager Edgar Maxion (L) and board member QuencyPhillips (R) inspect the construction underway. 250,000 1,000 Estate of Leslie LawtonRegis & Dianne McKennaJohn VidovichAnonymous (2)Acton Family GivingJohn ArrillagaMary J.
