2022-2023 STUDENT HANDBOOKWashington State Community College (WSCC) iscommitted to enriching the lives of students, familiesand the community through education, workforcedevelopment, cultural enrichment, andcommunity service. The campus, locatedjust minutes from downtown Marietta,is known for its attractive architectureand stunning grounds nestled within155 acres of rolling, wooded hills. Thecampus offers three academic buildings,a library, and a child developmentcenter. In order to accommodate students’schedules and learning styles, classes aretaught in a variety of formats: face-to-face, online,blended, day, and evening.Whether you choose an associate degree program or acertificate, coursework at Washington State CommunityCollege can lead directly to employment or transfer to abachelor’s degree program. “We are a student successcentered college focused on preparing you for yourfuture,” said WSCC President Dr. Vicky Wood. “Wetake pride in our low faculty to student ratio and ourfamily of accomplished educators who are passionateabout your success.”Students can pursue careers in health sciences in thefields of Nursing, Health Information ManagementTechnology, Medical Laboratory Technology, RadiologicTechnology, Respiratory Therapy, Medical Billing &Coding and Massage Therapy.Those interested in industrial and engineeringtechnologies can choose among Automotive/DieselTechnology, Advanced Manufacturing & IntegrationTechnology, Industrial Technology, Chemical Opertator,Process Technician, and Electrical EngineeringTechnology.A wide range of business technology programs areavailable for those who wish to pursue careers inaccounting, business management, and cybersecurity.Clinical experiences, internships and co-ops are oftenan additional component of the well-rounded educationstudents receive at WSCC.For those who want to serve and protect theircommunity, WSCC offers several career pathways inpublic service including Social Service Technology,Criminal Justice Technology, Peace OfficerBasic Academy (POBA), and Private SecurityAcademy. The POBA program offers threecredentialing options including academyonly, 1-year college certificate, and2-year associate’s degree in CriminalJustice.In addition to these hands-on programs,WSCC also prepares students for transferthrough a variety of transfer programsconcentrating in areas such as liberal artsand general sciences. Washington State’s strongpartnerships with four-year colleges in the area enablestudents to start the transfer discussion early and havea seamless transition. WSCC also prepares students fortransfer through early college credit options includingCollege Credit Plus offered at the high school, as wellas online or on the Washington State campus. Theseearly college options enable students to earn both highschool and college credit as high school students.WSCC’s Workforce Development program was createdby working collaboratively with business and industryto build customized training solutions to meet specificworkforce needs. APPLY & ADMISSIONSADMISSION PROCEDUREThe following steps apply to all students for regularadmission to an associate degree program (specialprograms may have slightly different procedures):1. Complete and submit an application foradmission. The application can be completedonline at wscc.edu or may be completed on aprinted form available from the Admissions Officeand returned to the Admissions Office.The following classifications best describe theapplicant’s college plans:DEGREE SEEKING: a student who is pursuing anassociate degree or certificate on a full- or part-timebasis.UNDECLARED: a student who is attending classes ona full- or part-time basis and who has not decided ona major field of study or who does not intend to seek adegree. Non-degree seeking students do not qualify forfinancial aid.FULL-TIME: a student who is enrolled for 12 or morecredit hours during a semester.WSCC IS OPEN ENROLLMENTWashington State Community College is an openenrollment institution. Open enrollment means thatgeneral admission to the college is open to all highschool graduates, persons who have successfullycompleted the G.E.D. exam or persons beyondcompulsory school age who can benefit from theprograms offered by the college.*Prospective students who wish to visit the collegeor who have questions about offered programsand services should contact Admissions at740.568.1900 (admissions@wscc.edu) to schedulean appointment.*Admission to the college does not ensureadmittance to a particular course or program.Some health programs have additional selectiveadmissions policies and entrance criteria whichare described separately in the academic catalog.In addition, some students may be requested toenroll in special course to eliminate deficiencies inacademic preparation.42022 - 2023 STUDENT HANDBOOKPART-TIME: a student who is enrolled for 11 or fewercredit hours during a semester.TRANSIENT: a student who is currently enrolled atanother college or university and wishes to earn creditsfor transfer to that institution.TRANSFER: a current or previous student at anotherinstitution of higher education who wishes to transfercredit to Washington State Community College.2. Submit official transcripts/official GEDscores. Official high school transcripts or anofficial GED score report are required for allstudents and must be sent to the Admissions Officebefore a student will be admitted to WashingtonState. Students who apply while still in high schoolwill need to send an additional official transcriptshowing they graduated.Official college transcripts will need to be sent tothe WSCC Records Office for evaluation.Upon completion and submission of the application foradmission, a formal letter of acceptance will be sent tothe student.3. Complete your FAFSA. The Free Applicationfor Federal Student Aid can be filled out online athttps://studentaid.gov/. Without this form yourfinancial aid cannot be processed.4. Contact the Center for Student Success toschedule an appointment for on-campusadvising and assessment.Assessments are administered to aid the student in classselection for communication skills and mathematics.These tests are for advising purposes and are notrequirements for admission to the College. Admissionto selected programs within the College, however, maybe based on assessment scores. In some cases, highschool transcripts or ACT/SAT scores can be used asassessments.Academic placement tests for some other subjects alsoare administered by faculty. These tests are given toassure that the student begins at a level commensuratewith his or her current level of knowledge and skill.Updated June 2022

APPLY & ADMISSIONSWHEN DO I APPLY?Although the College follows an open admissionspolicy, which means you can apply to the Collegeat any time throughout the year, certain academicprograms are limited in enrollment and have specificdeadlines. Therefore, prospective students areencouraged to review all admission requirements andapply early for acceptance.It is especially important for students who need financialassistance to apply early and complete all financial aidforms.SPECIAL ADMISSIONS PROGRAMSIn order to be admitted to the college under aspecial admissions program, if ineligible for the EarlyEnrollment Program or College Credit Plus program, thestudent must have attained the age of 16 or older at thetime of matriculation to the College.Recognizing that some individuals may benefit fromthe college experience without meeting the criteriafor general or special admissions, the admissionscommittee will review requests for exceptions. Anyonewho wishes to be considered under this policy shouldcontact the Dean of Student Success.EARLY COLLEGE ADMISSIONSThe Early College programs at WSCC are designedto assist high school students who are Ohio residentsin career exploration and earn college credits towardsa high school diploma by allowing them to completecollege classes while still in high school. There are twoprograms specific to high school students: College CreditPlus (CCP) and the Early Enrollment Program (EEP).College Credit PlusThe Ohio Revised Code 3365 governs CCP.In order to comply with the College Credit Plus (CCP)programs as enacted by the Ohio general assembly,the college will follow these procedures:A. The CCP process must be initiated at thehigh school level. High school counselors areresponsible for notifying and advising students andparents of the advantages and disadvantages ofparticipation in the program prior to the studentapplying for admission to the college. Studentsmust submit written intent to participate to the highschool by April 1, prior to their starting term.www.wscc.eduVISIT WASHINGTON STATECOMMUNITY COLLEGEA visit to WSCC is the perfect way to acquaintyourself with what the campus has to offer.Experience the comfortable atmosphere, thefriendly staff and the opportunity for a qualityeducation.The admissions staff will work with you to schedulea visit to campus. If there are specific programsyou’d like to learn more about, tours can bearranged of labs, classrooms and study areas.You can meet faculty members and have yourquestions answered on everything from financialaid to student life.Call the Admissions Office at 740.568.1900 toschedule your visit or learn more at wscc.edu/visit-usDIRECTIONS TO CAMPUSA map and detailed directions to the WashingtonState Community College campus can be foundonline at:www.wscc.edu/about/campus-map/B. All students who wish to participate in this program(1) are encouraged to attend an initial CCPplanning session in the spring prior to enrollingat Washington State Community College and (2)are required to attend a CCP orientation sessionat the start of fall semester. If the student beginsparticipation in summer or spring semesters,orientation will take place at the beginning of thoseterms. This session will provide an opportunityto learn more about the college and resourcesavailable on campus. Parents are encouraged toattend these sessions.C. All students will be required to demonstrate collegereadiness in the subject areas they intend tostudy through CCP. Placement assessment will bedetermined by the CCP academic advisor and willinclude Accuplacer scores, ACT, assessment mayalso include high school transcript evaluation. APPLY & ADMISSIONSresults of this placement assessment will be usedin advising the students during registration. Nostudent enrolled under CCP will be permitted totake developmental education courses. In addition,all course prerequisites must be met.D. All students will be assigned an advisor in theStudent OneStop. The advisor will serve as theacademic advisor for these students and actas a liaison with both high school and collegepersonnel to assist the student in being a successfulparticipant in this program.E. Students enrolled in the program will be subjectto the same policies and procedures, includingacademic standards, as are regular college students.Early Enrollment Program (EEP)The Early Enrollment Program at Washington StateCommunity College is designed to assist high schoolstudents who are Ohio residents in career exploration,college prerequisite or general education coursesby allowing them to complete college classes whilestill in high school. Students interested in this optionshould contact the Student OneStop to be advised ofapplication requirements. The following conditions mustbe observed:A. Any student participating in EEP may do so if theyare not currently enrolled in any dual enrollment orCollege Credit Plus.B. Rising sophomore students may enroll in one courseper semester, with approval of the Student OneStopAdvising Office. Rising junior and senior studentsmay enroll in two courses per semester beginningthe summer after sophomore year.C. A senior may enroll in one class the summerfollowing high school graduation if the student hascompleted a minimum of nine (9) Washington StateCommunity College transcripted semester credits.D. High school students may register for an EEP classno earlier than 10 business days prior to the startof each term. Students paying tuition will be givenpriority in the event that there are students waitlisted for the class. EEP students will be required topurchase their own books and pay any applicablefees, including lab and security and technologyfees. Students may enroll in courses offered duringthe day, evening or online upon space availability.F. Students planning to enroll in English or mathcourses, as well as courses that require completion ofan English or Math pre-requisite course, must take aplacement test or submit current official ACT scores.G. A student may enroll in any course offered atWashington State Community College exceptcourses taught through a third party contract. Thelist of these ineligible courses is held by the VP ofInstitutional AdvancementENROLLMENT ALTERNATIVESAlumni Audit PrivilegesIn order to encourage life-long learning and stayingup-to-date in their field, all tuition and fees, exceptlaboratory fees, will be waived for WSCC graduateswho desire to audit any class they have successfullycompleted while attending in pursuit of an associatedegree. Students paying tuition will be given priorityin the event there are too many people registered fora class. Textbooks and all other supplies or materialsrequired for the class shall be purchased by thealumnus. No additional credit or grades for transcriptpurposes will be accumulated by the graduate whileattending classes under this provision.International StudentsWashington State Community College is not authorizedto issue student visas and accept international students ona full-time basis. If an international student who is issueda student visa from another college is in good standingand has the permission of the college, he or she may bepermitted to enroll at WSCC on a part-time basis.Senior Citizens Fee WaiverStudents (age 60 and over) who are Ohio residentswill have tuition waived if they elect to audit creditcourses. All other charges, including but not limited tobooks, lab/course fees, and safety/security fees, willbe assessed. Students are responsible for paying theseadditional charges by the published payment deadlinefor the semester. If no payment is made, the courseregistration will be cleared.Enrollment for senior citizens who wish to audit will beon a space-available basis and opens 10 days prior tothe first day of each term. Financial aid is not availablefor senior citizen waiver registrations as courses aretaken for audit only.E. APPLY & ADMISSIONSSenior citizens who wish to earn credit for their courseswill pay tuition and fees and may enroll any time duringthe registration period. Senior citizens cannot enrollin courses granting academic credit and audit coursesduring the same term.Transfer ApplicantsStudents who wish to transfer credits earned at anotherinstitution of higher education to a degree program atWSCC should submit official transcripts for evaluation.A prospective student must complete an application foradmission before their transcript can be evaluated.Transfer credit is posted to the academic record after thestudent has matriculated. Grades of at least D quality mustbe earned in any course to permit acceptance of credit,except as noted under the Ohio Articulation and TransferPolicy. Washington State Community College subscribesto the Ohio Articulation and Transfer Policy as it appliesto courses transferred from other Ohio state colleges anduniversities and certain private colleges which participatein the policy.Students on academic probation from other colleges oruniversities will be admitted to WSCC on probation andmay be subject to course-load limitations.Transient StudentsStudents who are currently enrolled at another collegeor university and wish to earn credits to transfer to thatinstitution may enroll at WSCC as transient students.WSCC students who wish to apply credit earned atanother college toward a degree at WSCC must obtainapproval from their advisors and from the appropriateacademic dean prior to registering at another collegeas a transient student.TRANSFER PROCEDURETransfer of CreditStudents may transfer credit from other colleges toWSCC upon receipt of an official transcript by theCollege Records Office.College credit can only be transferred to WSCC froman institution accredited by a recognized regionalaccrediting commission.The grade for transfer credit must be a D or better, orequivalent except as noted under the Ohio Articulationand Transfer Policy.www.wscc.eduIn order to be applied toward graduationrequirements, the credit transferred to WSCC mustbe applicable to the program of study being taken atWSCC.WSCC subscribes to the Ohio Articulation andTransfer Policy as it applies to courses transferredfrom other Ohio state colleges and universities andcertain private colleges which participate in thepolicy. In general, courses will be transferred into theCollege regardless of how long ago they were taken.However, in some subject areas which have undergonerapid technological changes in recent years, thefaculty reserves the right to require students to passa proficiency examination or to repeat the course.Students should work closely with their faculty advisorson matters of course transfer. Students eligible for Veterans Educational Benefitscannot receive benefits for any course for whichthey previously received credit. The content of courses transferred must beequivalent to the current WSCC course content. Credit for a course which is applicable tograduation will not be granted in an amount inexcess of the current course credit offered byWSCC.Transfer Credit from AnotherInstitutionTo begin the process of transferring credit from otherinstitutions, you must first complete an application foradmission to WSCC. There is no charge to apply,and you can complete an application for admission inperson or online at wscc.edu/apply.A. Contact each college and/or university that youattended to request an official transcript. Anofficial copy must be sent directly from the sendinginstitution.
