St. James the Greater22502 11th Street, Eau Claire, WI 54703Message from Fr. TomWhat a great Summer Fest we had this year! It was pretty darned hot outside, especially near the cheese curd frying pit,but that didn’t dampen the spirits of people as far as I could tell. It is true, though, that people who were there for thewhole thing looked considerably different at 5PM than that did at 10AM. I learned a little bit about carburetors and airfilters at the car show and ate my fill of just about everything. It goes without saying that Bob Hollern didn’t win atBingo, extending his run to twenty-six years (give or take), but he now has competition for unluckiest Bingo player. Yep,I’ve dubbed Emma Barnett the “Ice Queen” when it comes to Bingo. I sat next to her and couldn’t take number afternumber not on her card, so I moved to another table. In any event, THANKS for all the hard work that allowed theconversations, laughter, and happy moments to take place. Ben and Amy Gumz, our co-chairs, get a standing “O” fortheir calm and competent leadership of the whole shebang.Golf Outing this weekend! Fred Desforge went foraging for prospective golfers during Summer Fest last weekend, andhe came up with some takers. If you didn’t get a personal invite, please don’t be shy about joining the fun this Sunday at3:00 or so for 9 holes at Mill Run. But please call Fred so he can arrange the groups and tee times. It’s very low key, with golf and some beverages and popcorn afterward. Fred’s # is 715.835.5688.Bishop Callahan is coming to Eau Claire and Chippewa for this coming weekend for his Sesquicentennial Celebrationvisit. (By the way, we have those excellent commemorative books about each parish in the diocese —a LOT ofthem—still for sale at bargain prices.) The Bishop will join all the clergy for dinner Friday night at Draganetti’s and onSaturday will share lunch with pastoral and finance council members throughout the area. On Saturday night there is ayouth event at St. Olaf’s where I will hear confessions. On Sunday there is a big picnic in Chippewa Falls and then aweary but well used Bishop will go back to La Crosse.A week ago Friday I was going through some old newspapers and caught a story that intrigued me. Thanks to the effortsof our own Linda John and Visit Eau Claire, our city hosted the National Beep Baseball World Series. I saw most ofthe championship series between teams from Indianapolis and New Orleans. What is Beep Baseball? It’s baseball for blind people. A ball the size of a softball is pitched from a sighted person whoannounces when the pitch is thrown and then the ball itself beeps rapidly to help the batter gauge where to swing. There are two padded posts roughly where first base and third base would be. After a player hits the ball one of thepadded posts starts beeping and then the race is on. With no vision to guide them, the runners sprint to the post that isbeeping. If they touch the post before the other team gets control of the ball, they score a run. If the defense controls theball before the runner touches the post, the runner is out. Defensively, each blind player is accompanied by a person withsight who alerts them when the ball is coming toward them and then they scramble to follow the beeping sound untilthey grasp the ball in their hands. Other than the batter running to the padded posts, there is no base running. Lindatold me we will have a good chance of hosting this event again in four years. Next year it takes place in Tulsa. My move down the block took a giant leap forward last week when I started sleeping in the new rectory. Some strongmen and women—Mark Briski, Al Taft, Cathy Baier and Mike Baier—worked steadily for 2.5 hours getting beds anddressers and Jacky’s old presidential desk from the parish office building to the rectory—almost all of it to the secondfloor up a narrow stair case. I think we’re still surprised we got that queen-size box spring up there. Anyway, now thatmy old bedroom is empty, Kelly Beaudrie and Beth Cerny can start transforming it into a youth room of sorts for our 9thand 10th graders during their nights of religious education. Things still feel pretty chaotic in my world, but each day alittle more order comes. I’m mad that one of my favorite framed art pieces fell off the mantel—I had just placed it there tosee how it looked--and took a header into the floor, busting the glass and disjointing the frame. Accidents happen fast.Happily, it is with the good folks at B-Framed getting fixed up. It is great to have people in our lives that can heal whatis broken. Peace.
