ASSOCIATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTSWHAT IS THE ASSOCIATE DEGREE?Students who complete two-year academic programs at Washington State are awarded an associate degree. Associate of Applied Business (A.A.B.) is awarded to Business Technologies graduates. Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) is awarded to graduates in Public Service, Health Sciences,Engineering, and Industrial Technologies. Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) is awarded to graduates planning to transfer tobaccalaureate degree programs. Associate of Individualized Studies (A.I.S.) is awarded to graduates of a two-year program tailored to specificeducational needs not met by other standard programs. Associate of Technical Studies (A.T.S.) is awarded to graduates of a two-year program tailored to an individuallyplanned technical education to respond to needs for specialized technical education not available in the formaldegree programs.The A.A.S. and A.A.B. degrees are designed specifically to lead to career entry or advancement. Applied Degreeprograms offer courses directly related to the technology major. Students become quickly involved in technicalcourses and continue to receive advanced education in upper level courses throughout the second year.New opportunities for transfer with A.A.S and A.A.B are constantly evolving. See an advisor in the Admissions Office forcurrent information.The A.A. and A.S. degrees are designed specifically for transfer to a four-year college or university. Degree programsare composed of courses normally required during the freshman and sophomore years of a baccalaureate program.Students complete most of the general education requirements during two years at Washington State, adding someprogram-specific courses during the second year.The Associate of Individualized Studies (A.I.S.) allows students to tailor their studies to specific educational needs not metby standard programs. In this way, the student can gain up to 40 credit hours of the 60 required by using transfer collegecredit and life experience credit. Individuals who wish to develop an individualized program of study should contact theappropriate academic division for assistance.The Associate of Technical Studies (A.T.S.) allows students to tailor their studies to respond to needs for specializedtechnical education not available in the formal degree programs. The program leading to an A.T.S. must have an areaof concentration which is equivalent to 30 semester credit hours in technical studies and clearly identifiable with a careerobjective. Individuals who wish to develop an individualized technical program of study should contact the appropriateacademic division for assistance.COLLEGE-WIDE ASSOCIATE DEGREE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTSA candidate for an associate degree from Washington State Community College must have satisfied thefollowing requirements, as well as have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours of credit together with at leasta 2.0 grade point average:A. Residency requirement: A student who wishes to apply credits earned at other colleges toward the degreemust successfully complete a total of at least 20 semester hours of credit in graded courses (A,B,C,D) under thesupervision of the college, with at least a 2.00 (“C”) GPA.B. Have completed the requirements of one of the degree program as outlined in the catalog, and its addenda ineffect at the time of the beginning of the student’s most recent period of continuous enrollment.C. The Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees require completion of the Transfer Module resulting in asubstantial number of additional general education courses.D. Complete at least 15 of the last 20 credit hours at the college, unless this requirement is waived with the approvalof the appropriate academic dean and the Vice President for Academic Affairs.E. ASSOCIATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTSGENERAL EDUCATION GOALSIn addition to preparing graduates for careers oradditional education, Washington State seeks to ensurea breadth of knowledge and promote intellectual inquiryfor all students. Upon completion of an associate degreeprogram, a Washington State graduate will demonstrateknowledge and skills in five key areas.1. Communication: Use various forms of communicationeffectively as a communicator and as an observer.2. Critical Thinking: Select and use effective approachesto solving a wide variety of problems as demonstratedby the ability to think critically, draw reasonableconclusions, and defend those conclusions rationally.CATALOG IN EFFECTThe curriculum requirements for graduation arethose in effect at the time the student enrolls. Thoserequirements will govern the student’s eligibilityto graduate as long as the student remains incontinuous enrollment. If the student does not attendclass for one semester (excluding summer), thecurriculum requirements in effect at the time of readmission will govern graduation.Students should save a .pdf copy of this catalogas a reference and guide while enrolled atWashington State Community College.3. Independent Life-Long Learning: Continue as an independentlearner engaged in a lifelong process of discovery.4. Science and Technology: Use current technology andscientific principles to adapt to a changing world.5. Understanding Values and Cultures: Demonstrate anawareness of the similarities and differences whichexpress the human experience globally.These general education goals are integrated into thedegree requirements of each associate degree programand achieved through completion of general educationcourses and courses in the technical major or majorconcentration.GENERAL EDUCATION COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLIED DEGREES (A.A.B., A.A.S., A.I.S., & A.T.S.)The AAB, AAS, AIS and ATS will be composed of not less than 30 credit hours of general education and nontechnical (basic) studies and not more than 35 hours of technical courses. None of these degrees will exceed atotal of 65 semester hours unless approved by the college’s Vice President for Academic Affairs in order to meet aspecial requirement of the program’s professional accrediting agency.Non-Technical studies will include a component of general education with the following minimum requirements. Allgeneral education courses will be Transfer Module except where noted.ENGLISH COMPOSITION AND MATHEMATICS (minimum of 6 credit hours): English Composition3 hours Mathematics3 hours (TM course recommended)NINE CREDIT HOURS IN THREE OF THE FOUR AREAS: Speech Communication or a second English Composition3 hours (recommended) Social and Behavioral Sciences(anthropology, economics, geography, history,political science, psychology, sociology)3 hours Arts and Humanities(art, foreign language, literature, philosophy, humanities, music, theater)3 hours Natural Sciences(biology, chemistry, geology, physics, astronomy)3 hours (TM course recommended)The same course cannot count toward both the social and behavioral sciences requirement and the arts andhumanities requirement. Courses meeting the requirement in the arts or humanities may include studio courses andspecial topics courses.NON-TECHNICAL (BASIC) (15 credit hours): Three credit hours in computer skills such as PC Applications or similar course. (Recommended - Exception may bemade for programs that embed significant computer skills within their curriculum.) The degree is designed to prepare techniciansand para-professionals for immediate entry into theworkforce upon graduation. Both technical and nontechnical courses are required for the A.A.S.A.A.S. Non-technical Course RequirementsThe A.A.S. requires a minimum 30 semester credits ofnon-technical studies. Courses may be in two categories:1. The degree isdesigned for students wishing to complete the first twoyears of a Bachelor of Arts degree, as well as thosedesiring two years of a general education with emphasisin the arts, social sciences or humanities. To earn anA.A., a total of 60-65 credit hours of work must becompleted, including the 36-40 hours earned in theTransfer Module.General Education Course Requirements for the A.A. (includesTransfer Module) Communication Skills: Two Transfer Module courses inEnglish composition, plus a minimum of one course inspeech communication for a total of 9 semester hours. Mathematics and Computer Science: At least one coursein mathematics that meets Transfer Module criteriaof building on three years of college preparatory orequivalent mathematics. In addition, a minimum of onecourse in computer science (Transfer Module or NonTransfer Module), either a microcomputer applicationsor a computer programming course to total at least 6semester hours Natural Sciences: A minimum of 6 Transfer Module credithours, including at least one laboratory course. Social and Behavioral Sciences: A minimum of 9 TransferModule credit hours, selected from at least two subjectareas. Arts and Humanities: A minimum of 9 Transfer Modulecredit hours selected from at least two areas. Additional electives to make up 36-40 total hours ofTransfer Module Courses.2017 - 2018 CATALOG7

ASSOCIATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTSASSOCIATE OF ARTS DEGREE COURSE DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS (CONTINUED)Major Concentration Requirement for the A.A.Students in an A.A. program must take at least 12 credit hours in an area of major concentration other than science,engineering, or mathematics, as prescribed by the chosen curriculum and approved by the student’s academic advisor.Recommended Electives for the A.A. DegreeThe remaining courses to meet the 60-65 credit hours required for the degree should be selected based on thechosen curriculum, the academic requirements of the institution to which the student plans to transfer, and theapproval of the academic advisor. One to three credits in physical activity/recreation courses may be applied to thedegree.Based on foreign language courses completed in high school and requirements of the chosen program at thetransfer institution, students may choose to complete one year of foreign language at Washington State.ASSOCIATE OF INDIVIDUALIZED STUDIES COURSE DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTSThe Associate of Individualized Study (A.I.S.) is awarded to students who successfully complete an individuallydesigned curricula prescribed to meet specific career goals. Students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 60semester credit hours in a well-planned, unique program to serve an educational objective that could not be servedthrough another degree program at the college.General Education Requirements for the A.I.S.The five general education goals will be included in each individually-designed curriculum, for a minimum of 30semester credits of general and basic related course work including the general education course requirements.Major Concentration Requirement for the A.I.S.The program leading to the A.I.S. must contain an area of concentration consisting of a minimum of 30 up to amaximum of 35 semester credit hours formed either by:1. An intra-college, interdisciplinary, but coherent combination of courses drawn from a minimum of two and a maximumof four instructional areas of study; or2. Up to 45 semester credit hours awarded by the college for documentable educational experiences or coursescompleted at another college judged by Washington State to be of college level; or3. An unusual but academically coherent combination of technical and general studies courses.Upon petitioning for acceptance into the A.I.S. program, a representative of Enrollment Management, the student’scommittee, and the student will determine the remaining required courses. Once students are accepted into theprogram, they must complete at least 20 credit hours within the approved A.I.S. program with at least half in thearea of the approved concentration. ASSOCIATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTSASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE DEGREE COURSE DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTSThe Associate of Science (A.S.) degree is awarded to students who successfully complete the requirements for thedegree with a concentration in mathematics, science or engineering. The degree is designed for students wishingto complete the first two years of a Bachelor of Science degree, as well as those desiring two years of a generaleducation with emphasis in natural science or mathematics. For a student to earn an A.S. degree, a total of 60-65credit hours of work must be completed, including the 36-40 hours earned in the Transfer Module.
