Statistical Area Definitions - MapsThe state maps which follow are provided as a courtesy. POLICOM utilizes maps which show thestatistical area boundaries for its research and has mapped the Metropolitan and Micropolitan areas forthat purpose. While believed to be accurate, POLICOM does not warrant the accuracy of the maps.Statistical areas are used by economists and Federal agencies to measure economic activity. For themost part, a statistical area has certain geographic boundaries in which a preponderance of theresidents lives and works, earns and spends, forming a “contained, measurable economy.”The major criteria for determining the boundaries of a statistical area are the commuting patterns of theworkforce and residents.Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) have at least one urbanized area of 50,000 or more population,plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core asmeasured by the location of the commuting workforce. They must have a minimum of one county andmost of the time includes several counties.Micropolitan Statistical Areas (MICRO) are smaller areas. A Micropolitan area must have an urbanizedarea with a population of at least 10,000 people but fewer than 50,000 people and must be at least onecounty. Most Micropolitan Areas are one county.The Office of Management and Budget - The White House (OMB) is charged with the task of defining thestatistical areas in the United States. The definitions are announced through “Bulletins” issued by theOMB.On March 6, 2020, the OMB issued Bulletin 20-01 (available at www.policom.com), which updated thedefinitions. The only change to the previous Bulletin was the addition of the Bluffton, IN MicropolitanArea (Wells County, IN). The number of Micropolitan Areas increased from 542 to 543.Maps have been generated for the Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas based upon Bulletin20-01.The lines on the maps point to the "metropolitan or micropolitan area" and not specifically to thelocation of the central city - the name of the area - which might be different than the point of the line.POLICOM Corporation – 2740 SW Martin Downs Blvd. #279, Palm City, FL 34990 – www.policom.com
