HISTORYIn June, 1965, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized ajunior College for the West Metropolitan Area of Atlanta at an unassigned location.After much discussion over the years between the Atlanta School Board and theBoard of Regents, it was decided to build the College on land owned by the AtlantaBoard of Education adjacent to the Atlanta Area Technical School, now AtlantaTechnical College.The Atlanta School Board authorized their Superintendent in February, 1971, todevelop a financial plan to build the new College. On October 9, 1972, the Board ofRegents reconfirmed in principle the construction of the College.In February, 1973, the Board of Regents authorized the plans and specifications forPhase I of the construction at a projected cost of 2,000,000. Construction began onthe first building in 1973 and was completed in August, 1974. The College becamethe thirty-first institution of the University System of Georgia and began classes inSeptember, 1974 with an initial enrollment of 504 students. Established as AtlantaJunior College, the institution underwent a name change to Atlanta MetropolitanCollege (AMC) during the 1987-88 academic year.During the 1976-77 Academic Year the construction of the Central Energy Plant wascompleted, and two multi-level academic buildings were added to the resources ofthe College in 1978-79: an Academic Classroom Unit and the College Library. AHealth and Physical Education Complex was completed and occupied during the1991-92 academic year. Atlanta Metropolitan College was the Practice Site for the1996 Olympics. A new Student Center opened in 2000 and a new entryway wascompleted in 2007.Properties located near campus have been acquired over the years, increasing thetotal size of the campus to approximately 79 acres.One particular piece of property, acquired by AMC in 2001, that is very significantwas originally called Funtown and later became Chocolate City. Funtown was asegregated amusement park that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. mentioned in his great“Letter from the Birmingham Jail.” Fall 2009, Atlanta Metropolitan College openedits first instructional site at 34 Peachtree. On May 10, 2011, the Board of Regentsapproved a substantive and mission change for Atlanta Metropolitan College tomove from Two-year college status to that of a State College.In its December 2011 annual meeting, the Southern Association of Colleges andSchools approved a substantive change for AMC to move from a Level I to Level IIinstitution, which authorized Atlanta Metropolitan College to offer four-yearprograms and the bachelor's degree. In spring 2012, the Board of Regents of theUniversity System of Georgia approved the name change of Atlanta MetropolitanCollege to that of Atlanta Metropolitan State College (AMSC).Atlanta Metropolitan State CollegePage 8 of 2792020-2021 Catalog

MISSION STATEMENTAtlanta Metropolitan State College, an access institution of the University System ofGeorgia, educates students from diverse backgrounds by providing affordable,career-focused bachelor’s and associate degree programs. The College offers studentcentered instruction, civic/community engagement, and quality services that lead tothe success of its inter-generational 21st century graduates.ACCREDITATION AND AUTHORITYAtlanta Metropolitan State College is a State College (Category 1), governed by theBoard of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Atlanta Metropolitan StateCollege is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools,Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and designated as a Level II institution. TheCollege confers bachelor’s and associate degrees, as well as certificates and non-creditcourses for continuing education.PROGRAMMATIC ACCREDITATIONSAtlanta Metropolitan State College’s business programs are accredited by theAccreditation Council for Business School and Programs (ACBSP) SoutheasternCouncil - Region 3.LOCATIONThe College is located within the City of Atlanta which boasts a metro Atlantapopulation of approximately 3.4 million, a thriving economy, and an internationaloutlook with all the cultural resources of a thriving metropolitan area.The College currently serves approximately 3,000 commuting students and issituated on a beautifully landscaped southwest Atlanta campus that is located tenminutes south of downtown Atlanta and fifteen minutes north of Hartsfield-JacksonInternational Airport.Atlanta Metropolitan State College is located in the southwest quadrant of Atlanta.The College offers the best of both worlds. Although within view of the city, it issituated on an expansive 68-acre wooded tract. The College is conveniently locatedon a transit line and is adjacent to Interstate 75/85.FACILITIESFacilities and equipment of Atlanta Metropolitan State College are provided for thepurpose of supporting educational programs and services approved for the Collegeby the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. The AMSCAdministrative Council is responsible for sanctioning the use of College facilities bygroups not affiliated with the College. of College facilities by outside groups is whether the proposed activity is inaccordance with the mission of the College.The campus buildings and facilities including the following: the recently constructedElridge W. McMillan Academic Sciences Building, the Science Lecture Building, theAcademic Building, the Library/Administration Building, the Physical EducationComplex, the Student Center Building, Student Success & Services Center Building,the historic Harmon House, the Central Energy Plant, Tennis Courts and ParkingLots in close proximity to classroom buildings, and expansive green spaces.FOUNDATIONThe Atlanta Metropolitan College Foundation, Inc. is a Georgia non-profitcorporation with the expressed purpose of receiving, investing, and administeringprivate support for Atlanta Metropolitan State College (AMSC). A board of directorscomprised of community, civic, corporate leaders and college administrators provideguidance for investing and managing charitable gifts to maximize the gift's value tothe College. The AMC Foundation, Inc., a non-profit Tax exempt Corporation, isorganized under the laws of the state of Georgia and section 501c(3) of the InternalRevenue code of 1986 as amended, and serves as the principal fundraisingorganization for the receipt and management of all private gifts and contributions toand on behalf of Atlanta Metropolitan State College.The Foundation operates for the express purpose of supporting Atlanta MetropolitanState College in fundraising, external friend building, establishing and building anendowment, and in addressing the academic priorities of the institution, whileunderstanding and supporting AMSC's mission, goals, and priorities. The "Mission"of the Foundation is to support and enhance the College by encouraging charitablegifts from community, corporate, foundation, alumni, and friends leading toacademic programs of excellence. GENERAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTSThe Office of Admissions at Atlanta Metropolitan State College is the beginningpoint for all applicants seeking to enroll. Admissions personnel review andevaluate all required documents submitted by applicants to determine eligibility foradmission. To be considered for admission to Atlanta Metropolitan State College,applicants must submit:1. A completed application2. A 20.00 non-refundable application fee3. Certificate of Immunization4. An official final high school transcript with date of graduation and/orGeneral Equivalency Diploma (GED)5. Transcripts from all regionally accredited colleges and postsecondaryinstitutions previously attended6. Verification of Lawful PresenceAll admissions documents should be submitted by the following priority duedates:FallAugust 1SpringNovember 15SummerMay 1Submitted documents become the property of Atlanta Metropolitan State Collegeand will not be returned or transferred to another institution.BACHELOR’S ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS1.2.Be a graduate of and have a college preparatory diploma from a highschool accredited by a regional accrediting association, or a public highschool regulated by a school system and state Department of Education.Have completed the University System of Georgia Board of Regents'Required High School Curriculum. Seventeen curriculum course unitsrequired as follows: English (4 units): emphasis in grammar and usage; literature(American, English, and World); and advanced composition skills. Mathematics (4 units): Georgia High School graduates shouldcomplete Math I, II, III and fourth year advanced math. 3. Science (4 units): The four science units should include two laboratorycourses. Students should complete one unit of Life Science/Lab, oneunit of Physical Science/Lab, and two units of science elective courses. Social Science (3 units): at least one course focusing on United Statesstudies, one course focusing on world studies, and one social scienceelective course. Foreign language (2 units in the same language): Both units must bethe same language.Have a minimum 2.0 cumulative high school grade point average.TRANSFER ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTSAll of the following minimum requirements must be met in order for an applicant toreceive consideration as a transfer but meeting them does not guarantee admission.A transfer applicant must:1. Have a minimum cumulative 2.00 grade point average in college-levelcourses (excluding developmental/remedial courses) from all accreditedinstitutions attended.2. Be eligible to re-enroll at the last institution attended.3. Have completed all Required High School Curriculum and learningsupport coursework required by any unit of the University System ofGeorgia (USG).4. Arrange for all transcripts to be received directly by the Office ofAdmissions. Student copies of transcripts, official transcripts opened bythe student, and fax copies are not acceptable.5. APPLICATIONStudents may complete their application online at www.gafutures.org Applicationscan also be submitted to the Office of Recruitment and Admissions by mail or inperson. Please refer to the website to print a paper application.Students who were previously enrolled in Atlanta Metropolitan State College, butwho have not been enrolled for three or more semesters including summer, mustsubmit an Application for Readmission to the Office of the Registrar prior to thesemester they intend to re-enroll.Students who previously applied to Atlanta Metropolitan State College but did notattend must submit an updated Application and any missing documents prior to thesemester they intend to enroll. Applications are valid for one academic year, afterwhich all documents are destroyed. After documents have been destroyed, anapplicant seeking admission must complete and submit a new application andsubmit all required documents to the Office of Recruitment and Admissions.Applications should be received in the Office of Admissions no later than thepublished priority due date. Any student that knowingly and willingly makes afalse statement on the application, in accordance with O.C.G.A. 16-10-71, whichprovides that upon conviction, a person knowingly commits the offense of falseswearing shall be punished by a fine of not more than 1,000 or by imprisonmentfor not less than one nor more than five years, or both, subject to prosecution in acourt of law. Any such false statement may subject a student to non-admission orimmediate dismissal from the institution.APPLICATION FEEA 20.00 non-refundable application fee is required of all applicants. Applicantswho previously submitted an application and paid the fee for admission within thelast three (3) semesters, but did not enroll, do not have to pay the fee again.Applicants who applied more than three (3) semesters ago must submit the fee withtheir new application. If the application fee was waived for any reason and you donot attend that semester, a fee will be required to update your application to a futuresemester.CERTIFICATE OF IMMUNIZATIONSIn compliance with the policies of the University System of Georgia, applicants arerequired to submit a Certificate of Immunization for measles, mumps, rubella,tetanus-diphtheria within the last ten years, varicella – (two doses), and hepatitis B– (three doses if you are the age of eighteen at the time of matriculation), foradmission. Applicants who have not been immunized for religious objections or for certifiedmedical reasons may exempt from the requirement. However, the applicant will besubject to College initiated withdrawal from classes, without refund in the event ofan outbreak of a disease for which immunization is required.Applicants who are taking only on-line courses may exempt the requirement bycompleting the Certificate of Immunization form and indicating taking only onlinecourses. Please complete the Certificate of Immunization form appropriatelyincluding any exemptions and submit to the Office of Admissions. The Certificate ofImmunization can be found on the website at www.atlm.edu.TRANSCRIPTSHIGH SCHOOL/GEDOfficial transcripts are required from the last high school attended showing date ofgraduation. Students who are currently attending high school should submit apartial transcript at the time of application. A final transcript must be sentimmediately after high school graduation. High school transcripts must showdate of graduation and type of diploma received. Student who received the GEDmust provide official GED scores.Note: If the student would have graduated within the past five (5) years, the officialhigh school transcript is also required for the time the student attended high school.If the student would have graduated more than five (5) years ago, only the officialGED scores are required. All transcripts must be received by the applicationpriority date for the semester for which the student is applying. Students who are currently enrolled at an institution during the semester ofapplication should send a current transcript, even if courses are designated as “InProgress”. A final transcript with no “In Progress” grades or courses must besubmitted to the school prior to the next term of registration. Likewise, transcriptssubmitted for any credit at any time must be considered final by the Registrar’sOffice in that it shows no “In Progress” grades or courses.
