Dear Associate Members,I hope this finds you well!There is good news, some facilities are opening up for limitedvisitations with some additional guidelines and rules andregulations. We will publish on the following pages ourrequirements and guidelines during this CORONA - Mutant StrainsPandemic.For facility guidelines, rules and regulations refer directly to thefacility.THE MOST IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS ARE: First take care of yourself and your dog(s). You cannot help if you contact the disease yourself. Please follow all the guidelines, recommendations and newrules set forth by the facilities and TDI. Please note: We have no health care insurance for our teamswhile visiting during these times. Only our regular insurance coverage is in effect. We recommend that all TDI handlers complete the Coronavirusvaccination process prior to resuming visitations. It is a beginning. Please note you must sign our additional paperwork prior tovisiting. We will include it in this newsletter. Only after wereceive the paperwork will we send out the new credentials for2021. Guidelines for Returning to Therapy Dogs Visitations(3/10/2021)Dear Associate Members,We received some responses after our recent mass mailing to all the facilities we have aMemorandum of Understanding (MOU) with. Some facilities are now willing to have TherapyDog visits on a limited basis.How are we going to approach this?1. We recommend that all TDI handlers complete the Coronavirus vaccination process prior toresuming visitations.2. The facility must guarantee that they will not open any portion of their campus to TherapyDog visits if they knowingly have clients there who currently have the Coronavirus.3. All visits must be conducted in compliance with all existing and all new Facility Rules,Regulations, and Guidelines and all existing and all new TDI Rules, Regulations, and Guidelinesfor visitations.a. A release form (page 4) is required to be signed by the handler and returned to TDI statingthat they understand TDI cannot be held liable if they become infected with the Coronavirusor any mutant strain, while visiting a facility which has requested visits. This release is requiredfor each Associate Member prior to visiting in order to hold TDI harmless if they contract theCoronavirus. Once TDI has received the signed release form, we will send your updated 2021credentials.b. The facility should include the volunteer in their Coronavirus testing program.c. The handler is required to follow all facility rules for visitations, and in particular, the hygienerecommendations. Depending on the circumstances, contactless visits may still be needed atthis time. If you have anyquestions, please feel free to contact us by email (therapydogsinternational@gmail.com) orby phone (973‐252‐9800 x201 or x202).Therapy Dogs International (TDI) Visiting GuidelinesTaking COVID‐19 PrecautionsUntil we learn more about how this virus affects animals, treat pets as you would other humanfamily members to protect them from a possible infection.Because there is a small risk that people with COVID‐19 could spread the virus to animals, CDCrecommends that pet owners limit their pet’s interaction with people and other animalsoutside their household. Walk dogs on a leash at least 6 feet (2 meters) away from others. Avoid public places where a large number of people gather. Do not put face coverings on pets. Covering a pet’s face could harm them.There is no evidence that the virus can spread to people from the skin, fur, or hair of pets. Donot wipe or bathe your pet with chemical disinfectants, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or anyother products not approved for animal use.Talk to your veterinarian if your pet gets sick or if you have any concerns about your pet’shealth.Visiting Without TouchingWe urge you to get yourself tested for COVID‐19. This should also help to make it much easierfor all concerned. Let us get back to work, different, but also a challenge. Brushing up on yourand your dog’s skills and teaching some new ones should be fun for both of you. Let’s govisiting!Here are the instructions you have to follow1. At this time some facilities will again allow visitors. Please communicate with the facilityof your choice for information about their policy, which must be adhered to by you andyour dog, the visitors.2. We, TDI, have sent a letter to all the facilities registered with us (about 14,000) withinformation about our new visitation recommendations and guidelines.3. Please study our new rules and regulations below for visitation during the COVID‐19crisis.5
At all times the government laws must be followed while visiting! Prepare yourself and your dog as always for a visit. (This information can be found inyour Membership Guide) Attire of handler (add face covering for handler only) and dog must be worn asprescribed in our Membership Guide. No Exceptions! Checking in at the Volunteer Registration Desk as always, except the rules of distance(6 feet) must be followed now. Explain to the volunteer coordinator and all involved how visitations will beconducted:No physical interaction is allowed, no exceptions!How to interact with your Therapy Dog without touching by keeping the proper distance?The Handler introduces the dog.The Handler will show off some of the dog’s accomplishments and explains to the client howto tell the dog to follow their command!Say Hello (dog could lift the paw)HeelSitDownStay in PlaceRoll‐overWeaveJump through a HoopEven without touching and direct physical interaction, this type of interaction could be a lot offun for the clients and the staff! The Therapy Dog most likely will enjoy performing forlaughter and applause.Absolutely no food allowed!Suggestion at the conclusion of the visit the dog should hold a small sign or card with a largeheart with the caption: “I Love you”.6

Saying Good ByeAll of us together, whether we know or have known each other personally or not, are and have been part of something which is good, is alive and growing.TDI has been perpetuating itself since the beginnings in 1976 so many are and have been part of this by adding to this “Building”. The message ofTherapy Dogs has spread. Through the dedication of people with their dogs, we are learning and understanding that there is so much more to be donefor the good of all, whether it is for humans or for dogs. By contributing our work with the help of our dogs, all of us in our unique way, have and aremaking a difference for the good of all Mankind.Thank you and Good Bye to you who have completed your work here on earth. You have left behind something which has made it worthwhile to havebeen part of in this world. You will be missed and remembered as having been part of something which is greater then any work of each individual alone!Herbert P. Kempe – A brilliant kind man – unassuming, not a leader,nor a follower. “He did things his way”.Herbert passed away on January 3, 2021. Born in New York City. Graduated from McBurney High School at theage of 16 years. Was accepted at MIT being 16 years of age. Graduated with a Bachelor of Science. Received hisMaster of Business Administration from the Wharton School of Business (University of Pennsylvania). Herbertwas a very smart, unassuming, kind man and had this great love for dogs and all animals.What was Herbert to TDI? The most important and supporting volunteer TDI ever had. Without him we could nothave accomplished what we did over the years. He gave his time, his expertise as a way of life.Thank you Herbert for what you did for TDI. To say more or even as much is not what you would have wanted.You always walked between the rain drops!There are very few people like you on this earth. God had put you here for a purpose. THE RAINBOW BRIDGEThere is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just thisside of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes tothis place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather.The old and frail animals are young again. They play all day with eachother. There is only one thing missing. They are not with their specialperson who loves them on Earth. So, each day they run and play untilthe day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nosetwitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenlyruns from the group! You have been seen, and when you and your specialfriend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your faceis kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into theeyes of your trusting pet. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge togethernever to be separated.811

People were drawn tohim like by a magnet. Jack could walk on his hind legs. The joy and awe in people’s faces when he did this was amazing.He won over even the most reserved person. He was a clown and also a Lab, well what do Labs like best, to eat. When wewere entrusted with Jack when his Mom Raine had to leave him even for a little while we were instructed not to give himtreats. Well, that did not work for Jack, he could ferret out even the smallest piece of food. (That made him into the kind ofrescue dog he became later on in life). When Raine came back we all looked very innocent. Jack also had a serious side tohim. When he sensed a person needed him, he gave his all and turned grief and tears into a smile.All of us who knew him could tell you many Jack stories. The truth is he had a big heart of gold.This is my favorite photo of him it shows you the essence of this dog. Jack you are missed and will stay alive in our heartsforever!After working in the field all day as a DSRdog, you want me to stand-up, walk and sing,ok, but I draw the line on playing the piano!1114
