ROBERT H. MCKINNEYThroughout his career — as a legal, business and civic leader — Robert H. McKinneyhas served his community, his state, and his nation with integrity and passion.McKinney was born November 7, 1925 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduatedfrom Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, and the U.S. Naval Academy, wherehe received a B.S. in engineering. In WWII, he served in the Pacific theater for threeyears (including a period on General Douglas MacArthur’s staff) before returningto law school in Indianapolis in 1949. Recalled to the Navy after receiving his lawdegree from Indiana University, he served in the Korean War for two years.Until his retirement in 2005, McKinney was chairman and CEO of First IndianaCorporation, parent company of First Indiana Bank (now BMO Harris Bank). He waschairman and CEO of The Somerset Group, Inc., and also a founding partner of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, anIndianapolis law firm.McKinney’s commitment to community-based banking prompted President Jimmy Carter to appoint him aschairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation, and theFederal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation in 1977.McKinney served on the Indiana University Board of Trustees from 1989 to 1998 and was president from 1993to 1994. He was chairman of the Board of Advisors of IUPUI and advising director to the IU School of Public &Environmental Affairs. He also is a member of the Board of Visitors of the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Lawin Indianapolis.McKinney is or has been a director of many organizations, among them the Presidential Advisory Board forCuba, Hudson Institute, Indianapolis Economics Club, Indianapolis and Indiana Chambers of Commerce, ChiefExecutives Organization, Inc.; World President’s Organization, Inc.; the American, Indiana, and Indianapolis BarAssociations; the United States Naval Academy Foundation, Indiana University Foundation, Conservation LawCenter, Board of Trustees of Marian University (former chair), the Carter Center at Emory University, and theSierra Club Foundation (former chair).His past work in the community also includes serving as the Indiana Chairman for the presidential campaignsof John F. Kennedy, Edmund Muskie, and Jimmy Carter. McKinney served as legal counsel to Indiana GovernorRoger D. Branigin and as Chairman of Governor Evan Bayh’s Government Reorganization Committee.He has received Honorary Doctorates of Law from Marian University in 1976 and Butler University in 1981.McKinney is the 1994 recipient of the Junior Achievement Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame Award, a1995 recipient of the Hoosier Heritage Award, a 1999 recipient of the IU Academy of Law Alumni FellowsAward, the 2000 recipient of the Indianapolis Archdiocese Spirit of Service Award, and a 2014 recipient ofthe Anti-Defamation League’s “Man of Achievement” Award. In 2017, he was a recipient of an IUPUI Spiritof Philanthropy Award and the Indiana University and IU Foundation Herman B Wells Visionary Award. Hereceived an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree from Indiana University in 2018.McKinney shared a long marriage with his late wife Arlene, and is now married to Shelley Barr McKinney. Student SpeakersJOYCE ALMEIDA PONCEJoyce Almeida Ponce attended law school at the Catholic University of Santiago deGuayaquil. As a law student, she became interested in jurisprudence, constitutionallaw, international law, and participated in several seminars on arbitration, procedurallaw, and constitutional law. After completing her studies, she graduated as anattorney, licensed to practice in the Republic of Ecuador. She interned at the lawfirm IBELEX, where she conducted legal research and litigation in various areas suchas constitutional, criminal, and family law. She also worked for the legal divisionof the Fire Department of Guayaquil, where she gained experience in public andadministrative law and litigation. Ponce studied the International Human Rights Lawtrack for her LL.M. and was offered an internship at the Indiana Supreme Court. Sheparticipated in the International Student Speaker Series in March 2021, where shetalked about the Constitutional Court of Ecuador and its decision on same-sex marriage.CAROLYN M. DAWSONCarolyn M. Dawson is honored and grateful to be finishing her Master ofJurisprudence degree. Prior to IU McKinney, Dawson obtained an Associateof Science degree in Business Administration, and a Bachelor of Science inOrganizational Leadership. She is particularly interested in the administrative aspectsof law and its intersections with ethical decision making, public administration,non-profit management, research and development, information security and privacy,especially in healthcare and technology environments. She has over 20 years ofexperience working in public service for state government, non-profit organizations,and in academic institutions. She is currently a research administrator in grants andcontracts at the Regenstrief Institute, Inc., a non-profit support organization of theIndiana University School of Medicine and other IUPUI schools. Student SpeakersSUNDEEP SINGHBorn in Carteret, New Jersey, and raised in Fishers, Indiana, Sundeep Singh attendedButler University, where he double majored in biology and political science witha minor in chemistry. After college, Singh completed his law degree at IU McKinneyin December 2020, where he also received a graduate certificate in Criminal Law.He held the title of chief justice of the Moot Court Society and vice president ofthe Asian Law Students Association. He also served as a mentor-advocate in theREACH program and an IU McKinney student ambassador. Singh has worked as alegal extern for Justice Steven David of the Indiana Supreme Court, legal intern forJudge Paul Mathias of the Indiana Court of Appeals, and for Judge Grant Hawkins ofMarion County Criminal Court 5. Singh was a certified legal intern for the HamiltonCounty Prosecutor’s Office during his last year of law school.BRE ROBINSONBre Robinson will speak on behalf of the Doctor of Jurisprudence, part-time, eveningdivision. Robinson graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a bachelor’sdegree in English. Robinson served as the Student Bar Association president (20202021) and vice president of the evening division (2019-2020). Robinson served onthe Indiana Law Review Volume 54 Executive Board as the symposium editor, and thenote Robinson wrote, “Who are We Afraid of? How Indiana’s Criminal Justice ReformFails to Address Individuals with Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorder,” will bepublished in Volume 53 of the ILR. Robinson was on the Robert H. Staton IntramuralMoot Court Board as an associate justice for competition management and was cochampion of the Staton Intramural Moot Court Competition (2019-2020). Robinsonalso served as a teaching assistant for Civil Procedure, and the REACH Program,which supports individuals re-entering the community from incarceration. DESCRIPTION OF DEGREESDOCTOR OF JURIDICAL SCIENCEThe Doctor of Juridical Science (Scientiae Juridicae Doctor or Juridicae Scientiae Doctor), or S.J.D. degree, is a terminaldegree in law, which is offered by a minority of law schools in the United States. The degree is designed for persons whohave completed a first degree in law (LL.B. or J.D.) and a Master of Laws (LL.M.), and who seek careers as academics inthe United States or abroad, as well as for scholars who seek affiliation with other academic or public policy institutionsworldwide.At the IU McKinney School of Law, the S.J.D. is a research-based dissertation degree. Each S.J.D. candidate works closelywith one of our faculty members who is an expert in the candidate’s field of study.MASTER OF LAWSThe Master of Laws (Magister Legum or Legum Magister), or LL.M. degree, is designed for students of exceptionalability who already hold a first degree in law.
