When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I wantthe hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that: I am responsible.”Editor’s choiceI received this as a personal email from a friend, formerly of New Smyrna Beach. It was not intendedfor the High ‘n Dry, but after reading it I asked for her permission to print it. - Tom L, EditorMorning Tom,I hope I’m not an annoyance. I’m just excited.Do I share this stuff where I’m supposed to?Yes, but at 5 am, right after prayer andmeditation, is when it’s the strongest. And soI write. What I know, one more time, is that thisstuff works. It works when I’m willing tofollow a few simple suggestions, even thoughI’m not sure about any of it at first. It workedwhen I did that 4th and 5th.when I went backto that 3rd step work again because when Idid, I trusted. It has been a very long timesince I trusted anything; yet, I trusted that ifthis God of my understanding showedsomething, then I needed to know. It wasquiet. I was aware of myself, but quiet. Iasked to be shown as I said “I don’t knowhow to do any of this. Show me, guide me,direct me”, and I’ll be damned if examplesdidn’t just start showing up everywhere. I feltwarmth with that. Sometimes I laughed atmyself because it is so simple. Two daysago the big example came and I have beengiven permission to share this.Highlights in this issue:I know someone who is older and on afixed income. The temperature up here iscold.currently 31 degrees. She lives in thisold dilapidated trailer. Her furnace was redtagged a few weeks ago, no heat whatsoever. An end to that is coming soon, but for now shehas to wait. We spend about five minutestalking about how it sucks to get a shower andhow cold it is while trying to get something toeat and then she turns upbeat, positive, and isa hell of a lot of fun to be around. But, what’sthe big thing? The big thing happened theother day when she called and ask me to goto all these food pantries with her, four to beexact. In the middle of this, I did think.do youreally need all this? What the hell?Thank God I kept my big mouth shutbecause what I found out later was that shetook all the food she collected to a family withlittle kids who were hurting. Yet, she barelyhad enough gas in her car to get home. In themidst of all her struggles, all the difficultiesthat she is experiencing, she gets up andhelps someone else.1,606 TotalMaybe someday whenYears ofI grow up, I can be aSobriety Thislittle more like her.monthJamey DColumbiana, OhioOn the Cover: Editor’s ChoiceFeature Inside: Twelfth Step Work – p. 6From The Archives: Richard Walker Author of 24 hr. book – p. 3Calendar of Events – p. 5

From the ArchivesRichmond Walker - Author of the Twenty-Four a Day BookRichmond Walker was born inBrookline, Massachusetts in 1892 to aprominent Boston family. His family owned ashoe manufacturing business in Worchester,Mass. He attended Williams College inMassachusetts and served in the MedicalCorp during WW 1. After a two year stay ofwhite knuckle sobriety in the Oxford Group in1939, he drank again for a year and a half.He joined AA and began his lasting sobrietyin 1942. He helped establish the Intergroup inBoston and then the Intergroup in DaytonaBeach where he spent his winters.Did you know that Richmond Walkerwrote the Twenty-Four Hours a Day book inDaytona Beach? He was influenced by thebook God Calling, a daily devotional by A.J.Russell. He converted the religious thoughtsinto universal spiritual thoughts and thesebecame the third section of each day in theTwenty-Four Hours a Day book.He was carrying little cards in his pocketwith these thoughts and other sobrietyreminders written on them. The “guys” in hisgroup in Daytona Beach suggested he write adaily devotional for alcoholics with thesethoughts incorporated into it. He wrote thebook and published it himself in 1948,running copies on a printing press in theDaytona Beach City Hall. After producing, binding and filling mail orders for his book fortwo years (10,000 copies each year) heapproached Bill W. about publishing the littlebook.Bill, after reading the book andshowing it to his group, decided againstpublishing it. There was no money left afterjust publishing the Twelve Steps and TwelveTraditions and the “guys” thought there wastoo much “God” for the membership. He then asked Patrick Butler, founder ofHazelden, a small publishing company inMinnesota, if they would take over producingthe “Little Black Book.” They bought the rightsto the book in 1954 and it has turnedHazelden into the huge publisher that it istoday. By 1994, 6 million copies of theTwenty-Four Hour a Day book had been sold.Richmond Walker died March 25, 1965in Daytona Beach. When the family came toclean out his home here, they found a box inthe back of a closet which contained all hispapers and donated them to our intergroup. We are fortunate to have the RichmondWalker Papers as part our Archives collectionat the intergroup office. This collectionconsists of the outlines of the AA talks hegave in Massachusetts where he got soberand around Daytona Beach after he movedhere. There are over 100 talks.3-14-453-28-45The Twenty-four programThe First DrinkAmong these papers is a group ofselections called Thoughts. These are theStaying Sober messages that he probablycarried around in his pocket. These are a fewof the 67 paragraphs: The Drink Problem isAlways First in Importance, Stopping Onceand for All, Excuses, Surrender, andSeductive Moments. This Information is from a talk given byGlen Chestnut, professor of History at theUniversity of Indiana at the National ArchivesConference in in 2003.in Ft. A. A.'s Country-wide News CircuitPlans and Ideas(Early Chip System)Control Board of the Central Baltimore A.A.Group has asked each group to ask a memberto report to The A.A. Grapevine each month. All members in the Tacoma, Wash., Group are"in the chips," carrying them in their pocketsand purses instead of on the shoulder. A whitechip given at the first meeting is exchanged fora yellow one after 60 days; the yellow for a redat the end of three months and the red for ablue at the end of a year of sobriety. At presentTacoma has four blue chip members with oneholding three blues while over half have one ormore red chips. These chips are felt to signifyand symbolize an honest effort to live the A.A.program. Although founded only in January1947 the members of the Tyler, Texas, Grouphave prepared a booklet entitled Slaves ofDrink Find Peace of Mind. In addition toexplanations of the A.A. program the bookletincludes discussions of alcoholism as a publichealth problem, questions to determinewhether the reader is an alcoholic and how tomake A.A. work. Hamilton, Bermuda, A.A.sreport a visit from Carla P. of the ManhattanGroup who gave first-hand information on theCentral Office, as well as a visit and talk fromRita S. of the Boston Group. Twelfth Step WorkThe familiar “Man on the Bed” illustrationcomes to mind whenever I think of twelfth stepwork: two alcoholics carrying the message toanother. A powerful image; yet, it is not theonly avenue to twelfth step work. There aremany roads, as the following passage from theTwelve and Twelve shows: *“.We sit in AA meetings and listen, notonly to receive something ourselves, but togive reassurance and support which ourpresence can bring. If our turn comes to speakat a meeting, we again try to carry A.A.’smessage. Whether our audience is one ormany, it is still Twelfth Step work. We can bethe ones who take on the unspectacular butimportant tasks that make good Twelfth Stepwork possible, perhaps arranging for the coffeeand cake after the meetings, where so manyskeptical suspicious newcomers have foundconfidence and comfort in the laughter andtalk. This is Twelfth Step work in the very bestsense of the word.”General Services and Volusia CountyIntergroup Services are not some impersonalorganizational structures. They are AAmembers taking and making opportunities todo Twelfth Step work.Volusia County Intergroup Servicespresents great opportunities to do twelfth Stepwork. Call, email, or stop by the intergroupoffice. See how you can help to carry themessage. You may volunteer at the store, helpCarolyn in Archives, become an IntergroupRepresentative or simply make the effort tolearn more about intergroup and to na.org for more information.* Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions,Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. , p. 110EditorHigh ‘n DryWe are currently seeking volunteers toreceive and pass along High ‘n Dryannouncements to our groups and to sendcomments, questions and announcementsfrom your group to Intergroup. So my friendhas plenty of time to take his inventory. Themore he looks the more unconscious selfdeception he finds. And the more astonishedhe becomes at the elaborate and deviousexcuse-making machinery by which he hadbeen justifying himself. He has already cometo the conclusion that the pridefulrighteousness of ‘good people’ may often bejust as destructive as the glaring sins of thosewho are supposedly not so good. So he dailylooks inward upon himself and then upwardtoward God, the better to discover just wherehe stands in this matter of honesty. Out ofeach of his meditations there always emergesone dead certainty, and this is the fact that hestill has a long way to go.”AA Co-Founder, Bill W., August 1961,“This Matter of Honesty,” The Language of the HeartCommittee Reports from page 2Reprinted with permission of the A.A.
