See page 24.The President’s Medal is awarded at the annual commencement ceremony to firsttime degree recipients with a 4.0 GPA in all college coursework, including 60 residentunits at Foothill.The President’s Service Leadership Award is given to a graduate who has exemplifiedthe highest qualities of leading in the service of others, locally or globally. The awardcomes with a 500 scholarship.3
STUDENT SPEAKERSTEREZA KOPCILOVA Class of 2021 Foothill CollegeTereza Kopcilova is an international student from the Czech Republic.She is graduating with a business administration degree and will betemporarily transitioning to the workforce for one year of OptionalPractical Training to gain more experience in her field. Tereza hasserved as an Associated Students of Foothill College marketingcommissioner and co-chair on the Marketing Committee, workedtwo years as a student employee at the Financial Aid Office, andparticipated in the Business Entrepreneurship Club as the vicepresident of finance.Tereza found her passion for student advocacy at Foothill College,and she has proposed new ideas that will benefit students for years tocome.“I want to thank Foothill’s faculty, staff, colleagues, mentors, andmy family and friends for always supporting me in everything I do,believing in me, and encouraging me to follow my passion and heart.”PABLO LASSO Class of 2021 Foothill CollegePablo Lasso is originally from Chile. Pablo is a percussionist of AfroCuban rhythms and plays instruments like the djembe, cajon andbodhran at the Stanford Catholic Community and with a jazz combocalled Tuesday Noons. Pablo also composes hip-hop songs with socialimpact.Pablo is graduating with an associate degree in music technology andis excited about his future as a music producer. “I am a little personand have Morquio Syndrome. I have overcome many hurdles in mylife in order to be here, therefore this is a great milestone for me tograduate,” Pablo says. “I am beyond thankful to Foothill College.”In his free time, Pablo likes to row at the Bair Island Aquatic Center atthe adapted rowing program or outdoors on the water and hike in theCalifornia and Chile mountain foothills.4
CLASSIFIED SPEAKERPAULINE BROWN-UILI, M.A. Supervisor Family Engagement InstitutePauline Brown-Uili is a second-generation Samoan American, bornand raised in East Palo Alto, and the oldest of seven siblings. Whenshe was nine, Pauline volunteered with the Foothill College CounselingDepartment and Pass the Torch. She fondly remembers how Dr. JeanThomas and her team greeted every student with a smile. Paulineattended Eastside College Preparatory School and studied cellmolecular biology at the University of California, Merced. She wasthe first in her family to receive her bachelor’s degree. Recently,Pauline received her Master of Arts in leadership from William JessupUniversity.Pauline is dedicated to the work of serving students. She hascoordinated many college and community events, emceed studentgovernment and FEI events, advised the People of the Pasefika (POP)student club, and mentored countless students. She has also servedas a recorder, facilitator, and classified staff member on the Revenueand Resource Council and is an active member in the Asian PacificAmerican Network (APAN). Pauline enjoys spending time with family,laughing with friends, and serving as a mentor to the youth in hercommunity. She is honored to speak at this year’s commencement andwishes all the graduates a huge blessing on their future endeavors.FACULTY SPEAKERTIFFANY RIDEAUX, PSY.D. Instructor PsychologyTiffany Rideaux has been a full-time instructor in the psychologydepartment at Foothill College since fall 2014 and is currently anUmoja co-coordinator and a faculty mentor in the HumanitiesMellon Scholar program. She earned her bachelor’s degree inItalian studies from Stanford University and her doctorate degreein clinical psychology from the PGSP – Stanford PsyD Consortiumprogram at Palo Alto University. Prior to teaching, she worked forthe San Francisco non-profit Institute on Aging, conducting in-homecognitive assessments and published research with colleagues at theVA Palo Alto Healthcare System. She is passionate about psychologyand helping students use mindfulness and meditation skills to managetheir social and emotional experiences.5
THE BACHELOR’S DEGREEToday marks Foothill’s fourth graduating class receiving a bachelor’s degree in dentalhygiene. In 2015, Foothill was one of 15 California community colleges selected to offera baccalaureate program. Students acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and practicein their field for a fraction of the cost of a four-year university or college. Foothill’sdental hygiene program has received accolades from the California Community CollegeChancellor’s Office for the attainment of post-college outcomes in employment, earningsgains and regional living wages. THE ASSOCIATE DEGREEEarning the associate degree represents more than an accumulation of units. It symbolizesthe successful completion of established patterns of learning designed to developcapabilities and insights. Today marks Foothill's fourth graduating class receiving a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. In 2015, Foothill was one of 15 California community colleges selected to o!er a baccalaureate program. Students acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and practice in their field for a fraction of the cost of a four-year university or college.
