STUDENT SPEAKERJOSHUA CONTRERAS, A.A.–T. Class of 2022 Foothill CollegeJoshua Contreras is a first-generation Mexican American studentwho started his journey at Foothill College in the Fall of 2019 as apart of the Puente program. He is an English and Kinesiology majorpursuing a career in teaching. Joshua served as the AssociatedStudents of Foothill College (ASFC) Vice-President of the Inter-ClubCouncil from 2020 to 2021. He continued his service into his 3rdand last year on campus, serving as the ASFC Student Rights Officerfrom 2021 to 2022. Although he is greatly involved with many oncampus positions, off campus he is a martial artist that focuses onAmerican Kenpo Karate, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing. He carries alot of lessons from his martial arts and applies them to many aspectsof his life, from leadership, education, and wherever he finds himself.Joshua has prided himself on the main lessons he has learned throughdiscipline, determination and dedication to accomplish his goals.CLASSIFIED SPEAKERADIEL VELASQUEZ, B.A. School Relations Specialist OutreachAdiel Velasquez is a Foothill alumnus and first-generation collegegraduate. Raised in East Palo Alto, he attended Foothill Middle Collegehis senior year of high school and went on to major in Psychology andCommunications. While at Foothill, Adiel was a member of AssociatedStudents of Foothill College (ASFC), clubs, EOPS and ambassadors.In ASFC, he served as Vice President of Administration and went onto be elected student body President for a year. He transferred toUCLA in 2015 and worked in the UCLA transfer office as an InternshipDirector. Adiel graduated in 2018 and has been working at Foothillsince 2019. During the pandemic, he served as a Dual EnrollmentCoordinator and now works as Foothill’s School Relations Specialistwith the Outreach Department.4
FACULTY SPEAKERALLISON HERMAN, M.A. Instructor Language ArtsAllison Herman joined Foothill College as a full-time instructor in theEnglish Department in 2013 and teaches composition and literaturecourses emphasizing human rights and literary activism. She iscurrently serving as Research and Service Leadership SymposiumCo-coordinator and has developed additional campus-wide eventsand programs that foster student engagement and equity, such asFoothill’s Human Library and English Summer Bridge. She earnedher bachelor’s degree in English literature from UC Berkeley anda master’s degree in English literature from San Francisco StateUniversity, with certificates in the teaching of composition andpost-secondary reading. While in graduate studies, she taught at SanQuentin Prison through the Prison University Project, where shewitnessed the power of education in advancing social justice. As aformer community college student who began her academic careerat Santa Barbara City College, she believes in equal opportunitiesfor quality education and is proud to be part of the Foothill family,surrounded by innovative students and colleagues who bring joy andinspiration to her work.5
THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREEToday marks Foothill’s fifth graduating class receiving a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. In 2015,Foothill was one of 15 California community colleges selected to offer a baccalaureate program.Students acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and practice in their field for a fraction of the costof a four-year university or college. Foothill’s dental hygiene program has received accolades fromthe California Community College Chancellor’s Office for the attainment of post-college outcomes inemployment, earnings gains and regional living wages. THE ASSOCIATE DEGREEEarning the associate degree represents more than an accumulation of units. It symbolizesthe successful completion of established patterns of learning designed to developcapabilities and insights. Among these are the ability to think and communicate clearly;use mathematics; understand the modes of inquiry of major disciplines; be aware of othercultures, eras and places; gain insight into ethical problems; and develop self-understanding.In addition to all these, the student focuses on one field of knowledge in sufficient depth tocontribute to lifetime interest.
