Page 2 Nebraska NurseJune, July, August 2012NNA’s Mission:President’s ColumnTorri Merten, MSN, RNAs you are reading this articlewe will have moved into theSummer season. Although Iwonder if we even had a Springseason this year. With recordhigh temperatures in March and afrost expected in April many wereplanning their planting seasonvery carefully. That remindedme that we all must carefullyTorri Mertenplan how we execute any project, strategic plan or goal. We mustdecide where we want to go first. We must create thevision (the seed) then plan how to get from here (seed) tothere (blossoming plant). This is very relevant to the futureof the Nebraska Nurses Association.Since our October and November visits with LesWallace, 21st Century Leadership Speaker, we havestarted to lay the foundation for the forward movementand growth of our organization. We have brainstormedstrategic goals and now we are working out the plan to getus from here to there. We are working diligently to stayrelevant in today’s changing world. The Board of Directors along with the AmericanNurses Association is working with the principlesoutlined in “The Race for Relevance: 5 Radical Changesfor Associations” by Harrison Coerver and MaryByers (2011). We are evaluating our organization andstudying what it will take to stay current in this everchanging culture. The five radical changes ask us to lookat overhauling our governance model and committeeoperations, empowering the CEO and enhancing ourstaff expertise, rigorously defining our member market, rationalizing our programs and services and building arobust technology framework. As we embark on evaluating and assessing ourorganization we hope that all Nebraska Nurses will playa part in building and leading our organization. You willbe asked in this edition of the Nebraska Nurse to take animportant survey on what value our organization offersyou and how we can better serve you, our RegisteredNurses. I ask that you take the time to complete thissurvey and give us the vital input that is needed tocontinue to grow and sustain our membership. We are alsoworking on an interview-based assessment where we willtake the time to meet with key stakeholders, both membersand non-members to ask key questions about operationsand the value of the organization. Please take the time toparticipate if invited to these key assessment sessions. As I am wrapping up the last six months of myPresidency for the Nebraska Nurses Association I amexcited and hopeful. I am excited that I have helped laythe foundation for this exciting time. I am excited to seeour membership take an honest look at our organizationand evaluate how we can better serve our members. I amhopeful that through my year as Past President I will getto see this work to its completion and if not I know that Iwill leave this organization in good hands. Terry AndersonMSN, RNC-OB, NE-BC has done an excellent job inleading the strategic planning initiative and I look forwardto transitioning the leadership of our organization over toher. In our next edition you will be receiving the call toconvention and the NNA House of Delegates for 2012.Please mark your calendars for Friday, October 12, 2012(NNA Convention) and Saturday, October 13, 2012 (NNAHouse of Delegates). June, July, August 2012Editorial: The Futureof NNA–Exciting orExtinct?Teresa Anderson, EdD, MSN, RNC-OB, NE-BCNNA, President-ElectAs a “baby-boomer,” I am a joiner–a nurse whoinvested in advanced education and membership inprofessional nursing organizations at the beginning of mycareer and continued that involvement even when, at times,it meant being a “card carrying, dues paying member”only. Over the years, the new knowledge, continuingeducation, and networking kept me coming back.Today, the market for information, continuingeducation, and even networking has changed. I can get allthese things at the push of a button from the comfort of myhome office. Why should I continue to pay dues to belongto organizations like the Nebraska Nurses Association? What’s in it for me? As the official “voice” of nursing,ANA/NNA speaks for all nurses in this state, be theymembers or not. I have been a member of ANA and NNA(or another constituent association) for nearly my wholecareer but never really considered until recently the truemission of ANA/NNA. I see the core business of NNA tobe Legislative advocacy Nursing scope of practice and ethical accountability Communication/information brokerage Promotion of health for every person and support foran effective work environment Recognition of nursing excellence in NebraskaNNA’s vision is to “be a proactive voice for nursesand an advocate for improved health for all.” Thisadvocacy was recently demonstrated by the passageof two important bills to amend the Respiratory CareAct (788) and to allow Nurse Practitioners to sign deathcertificates (1042) which were the NNA champion causesthis year. This work cannot occur without the supportof Don Wesely the NNA paid lobbyist and the NNACommittee on Advocacy and Representation!Nurses today must consider the value of their time, talents, and treasure. With dozens of professionalorganizations (nursing and non-nursing), and significantsocial networking venues such as Facebook , Twitter ,LinkedIn and others, the options for information, education, and networking are almost endless and oftenfree or available at a reduced price. With state/districtdues of 167 per year or higher, what makes the NebraskaNurses Association worth the money? As of 2009, therewere 23,569 active registered nurses in Nebraska. For thissame period there were approximately 800 active membersof the Nebraska Nurses Association; just 84 membersvoted in NNA elections last fall. It appears that membersare losing interest. To remain relevant to our members (and prospectivemembers), organizations like ANA/NNA must takea hard look at how we currently do business and thevalue provided to our members for the cost. The NNAmust define our value for multiple generations of nursespracticing in the State of Nebraska, and we must radicallychange our business model, our communication strategies, and our goals if we are to survive. On the homepage of the Nebraska Nurses website,www.nebraskanurses.org you will find links for NNAmember and non-member surveys. Please take a fewminutes to tell us what you want from the only nursingorganization in the state to be recognized as the official“voice” of nursing, and how we can create value for you.Nebraska Nurse Page 3Executive Director’s ColumnTimoree KlingerExecutive DirectorNebraska Nurses AssociationHello all, I hope that you areenjoying the beginning of yoursummer.
