St. Francis Parish Priest’s PageHosea’s StoryHosea was a prophet who lived at a time when the people of God, did not want to hear hismessage. They were more interested in worshiping idols than worshiping God who createdthem. They were prone to wander. As Jennifer Rothschild puts it, one day, God told Hosea his bachelor days were up. The problem with the wedding announcement was, it came with a dreadful prophecy. His wife wouldbreak his heart. Aware of Gomer's promiscuous reputation, Hosea humbled himself in obedience to the Lord.As a godly man, he surely had different hopes for marriage, such as those of pursuing a loverwho would share not only his heart but also his faith and convictions. As the story goes, after afew years of marriage she left him. A broken-hearted father, a betrayed husband and a bewildered preacher, Hosea felt like his fragile heart would never recover.Gomer's wanderings had drawn her into the wrong company. But God asked him to buy herback. Hosea cried out to God, that she had thrown his love away. Why should he go bring herback?Hosea was a faithful husband; but Gomer was not faithful to him. The symbolism of the storyis that God is the faithful lover of our souls. We are often faithless, prone to wander.Hosea and Gomer's story is the story of God and his children. It is also our story. When we,like Gomer, were enslaved, God bought us back. When we found ourselves stuck in chains wenever intended, like chains of insecurity, discontentment, or fear—God freed us. When we, byour very nature, threw God's love away, He redeemed us.When Hosea bought Gomer back from the streets, he did so with 15 shekels of silver and 5bushels of barley (Hos. 3:2). When God redeemed us, He paid the ultimate price with theblood of His Son (I Pet. 1:18, 19).God’s love for us is unconditional; its non-judgmental. No matter where youare, God sees who you are, and He loves you. He made a covenant with us,that we belong to Him, regardless!!!On the cross, Jesus paid the full price for our freedom. As saint Paul says, someone might die for a good man/woman, but Christ died for us, while wewere sinners. How Your Story Connects with Hosea'sA prophet must experience what God has gone through. He loved his peopleand redeemed them, but they did not know His love.People whom you love and serve, may blame you of things you never done.Children might abandon their parents and parents may disown their own children. This is your own Hosea story!Hosea’s story recaps God loves us so very much. He bought us back. He willheal you from your infirmities. He will heal your faithlessness. He valuesyou so much that He enters covenant with you and redeems you and remainsfaithful to you. May we never carelessly throw away what cost God so much.God Bless,Fr. Theo.
