Is that yours? You must be so happy?" As shewalked away the child’s mother thought to herself, "Why don't I have the joy of that littlegirl?"At times we have those feelings which causeus to cry out, "I need more joy in my life!" ThatBut the angel said tois so often true at this time of year when for onethem, "Do not be afraid.reason or another we find ourselves lacking joy.I bring you good news ofThere are indications everywhere that joyShould fill our lives. Decorations are going upgreat joy that will be forinside and outside. Christmas music surroundsall the people.us, and cards are arriving daily.–Luke 2:10Some days the festive joy fills our hearts aswe excitedly go about our holiday shopping andschedule planning. Yet deep down we knowthat this joy will not last. Planning becomes overwhelming, schedules start falling apart, and decorating gets tiresome. Above all, we know from experience, there will be no joywhen we find we don't have enough money to purchase the perfect gift or when creditcard payments come due. All of this leads us to shout out, "I need more joy! I need joythat will last!"Here’s some great news. Christmas brings us joy that does last—the true joy found inJesus. With a love that we cannot comprehend, our heavenly Father gave his only Son, bornto be our Savior. With perfect obedience Jesus lived the life all of us are unable to live. Each and every evil thought, evil word, and evil deed we have done has been pickedfrom us by our heavenly Father and placed on Jesus. On Calvary’s cross, Jesus bowedhis head in death declaring, “It is finished.” Thesewords of Jesus bring us true joy. They mean that all isdone and Easter’s announcement “He Is Risen!"guarantees that God our Father has accepted Jesus'life and death as payment in full for all our sins. Truejoy is the forgiveness of sins that is ours through faithin Jesus. While we are in the midst of the season when itseems hard to keep joy in our lives, focus on the trueJoy Giver. Ponder again the words of the angels tothe shepherds, “Today in the town of David, a Saviorhas been born. He is Christ the Lord.” Come andworship the Babe born in Bethlehem and may Godthe Holy Spirit fill you with a joy that never ends.CHURCH NEWSLETTERImmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church

Advent is a wordthat means “Coming.” Advent is aseasonofpreparationandanticipation. The Church looks forthe coming of her Savior in thisthreefold advent: his coming in theflesh; his return in judgment; hisdailycominginWordandSacrament. The Church encompassesall these facets of the season in thesingle word that defines Adventworship: “Come!” Throughout theprayers, verses, and lessons thatsingle word is our invitation, ouranticipation, our sure and certainhope. Come, Lord Jesus! Thefollowing are our themes for theSundays in Advent: December 1st: Your AdventKing Comes to Save December 8th: Christ IsNear Repent! December 15th: Christ IsNear with News ofDeliverance! December 22nd: Christ, theVirgin-Born, Is with YouAdvent PreparationUnlike the world, the Church doesnot prepare by frantic doing orfrenzied promises to get somethingdone. Instead, the Church preparesby receiving. To help us receive thegifts of Christ and be prepared forhis threefold coming, we offermidweek Vespers during Advent. These services will begin at 7:00p.m. on December 4th, 11th and 18th.The Vespers service is the church’sevening prayer. The word “vesper”comes from the Latin word whichmeans “evening.” The service ismeditative and repentant in toneand fits in well with the penitentialand preparatory nature of theAdvent season. The theme for thisyear’s Advent Vespers is: Your KingIs Coming. Each week we will bereminded that we wait, pray andlive by faith in God’s promises. Thisis a message that is completelycounter-cultural yet one that iscompletely necessary. Make plansnow to receive Christ’s Advent giftsas you look forward to celebratinghis return.Jesus Cares ChristmasServiceOur Jesus Cares group will have theirChristmas service on Tuesday,December 10th at 7:00 P.M.
