Lantus SoloStarThis guide givesyou informationto help you startusing your LantusSoloStar pen.About LantusSoloStarYou have been prescribed Lantus.Lantus will help you control your bloodsugar levels throughout the day.Your doctor or nurse will explain how you should takeyour Lantus. Follow their directions, don’t be afraid to askfor help if you are having any problems withyour insulin.Lantus should be taken once daily, so choose a time thatis convenient for you. Lantus works best if you take it atthe same time every day.Lantus SoloStar is a pre-filled disposable insulin pen.Before you start using your Lantus SoloStar , it’s a goodidea to familiarise yourself with the pen.3

Preparing to use yourLantus SoloStar penBefore each injection, make sure you havethe following ready:Your LantusSoloStar penA newsterile needle*A punctureresistant container*for used needlesand pens*Please note these items are not provided with the Lantus SoloStar.!Please take care when handling needles.Do’s and dont’s before using your pen Always wash your handsbeforehand Always use pens that arewithin the ‘use by’ date onthe pack Always check the label Clean the injection site Never use the pen if it isdamaged or not workingproperly Never share your pen Always perform a safetytest before you inject5

Lantus SoloStarStep4StepStep65Inject your doseacbSelect an injectionsite (see next sectionfor possible sites)Push the needle intoyour skin as shownby your doctor,pharmacist or nursePlace your thumb onthe injection button.Then press all theway in and hold Do not touch theinjection button yet Do not force theinjection buttonif you find it hardto press. This maybreak your pen10secs2-2dKeep the injectionbutton held down.When you see “0”in the dose window,slowly count from 1 to10. This will make sureyou get the full dosee Do not press atan angle as yourthumb couldstop the doseselector fromturningAfter holding andslowly counting to 10release the injectionbutton. Then removethe pen from theinjection siteIf you find it hard to press the button in do not force it,as this may break your pen:1. Change the needle and perform a safety test2. If you still find it hard to press in, use a new pen10

Where toinjectYou can inject LantusSoloStar into one of twoareas on your body.The 2 recommendedinjection sites are:Stomach– The stomach: except fora 2-inch circle aroundthe belly button– The top and outer thighs:avoid injecting too close tothe area above the knee!Thighs If you have eyesightproblems, you mayneed someone tohelp you.Injecting tipsRotateThe injection site should be rotated toprevent skin changes such as lumps underthe skin. The insulin may not work very wellif you inject into a lumpy area. Contact yourdoctor if you are currently injecting intoa lumpy area before you start injectingin a different area. Your doctor may tell youto check your blood sugar more closely,and to adjust your insulin or your otheranti-diabetic medication dose.Do notpinchthe skinDo not rubthe injectionsite afteran injection11

The needle canpuncture the cap if it isrecapped at an angleGrip and squeezethe outer needlecap. Turn your penseveral times withyour other hand toremove the needle! Try again if theneedle does notcome offdPut the pen capback onc Never put the innerneedle cap back onThrow away the usedneedle in a punctureresistant container!12 Do not put the penback in the fridgeNever attempt to remove the insulin fromyour pen with a syringe

Storing your LantusSoloStar penMake sure you read and understand the informationbelow before using your Lantus SoloStar .Storing your pen1Keep any unopened pens in the fridge (not the freezer).The temperature should be between 2 C and 8 C2Before using a new pen, take it out of the fridge an hour beforefirst use3After your first injection, store your pen at a temperature below30 C (never put your pen back in the fridge). Always keep yourpen away from direct heat and light4Once opened, each pen can be used for a maximum of 4 weeks5Always use a new, sterile needle each time you inject6A new needle will make the injection more comfortable andalso prevent any problems that can occur when old needlesget damaged or blocked7Never store your pen with the needle attached13

Lantus SoloStarCaring for yourLantus SoloStar penHow to look after your pen You can clean the Lantus SoloStar with a dampcloth, but do not soak or wash your pen I f your pen becomes difficult to use, do not tryto fix it, use a new pen You can carry the Lantus SoloStar with you at alltimes. Help take care of your pen by:- Not dropping or knocking it against hard surfaces- Protecting it from dust and dirt C arry a spare pen in case your current one gets lostor stops workingDisposing of your pen whenit is empty, or out of dateYou can store your Lantus SoloStar for 4 weeks after it hasbeen activated. After this time, you must throw it away,even if there is some medicine left in it. Replace the pencap and dispose of the pen in the way advised by yourdoctor or nurse.You can tell the pen is empty when the dose pointer hasreached ‘0’ on the dose scale, and the injection buttoncannot be pulled out any more.14

FAQs about Lantusand Lantus SoloStarWhat do I do if there are air bubbles in the pen container?It is normal to have small air bubbles in the pen container and they willnot harm you. Your dose will still be correct and you will be able to usethe pen as instructed.What if no insulin comes out during activation?The needle may be blocked or not properly screwed on. Remove theneedle and attach a new one. If still no insulin comes out, your LantusSoloStar may be damaged, so do not use the pen.What do I do if it is hard to press the injection button all the way down?Withdraw the needle and check that it is screwed on correctly. If it is stilldifficult to push the injection button, the needle may be blocked, soremove it and attach a new one. If still no insulin comes out, your LantusSoloStar may be damaged, so do not use the pen.What do I do if I accidentally inject myself before my LantusSoloStar pen is activated?Do not try to correct this by giving yourself a second injection. Contactyour doctor or nurse for advice on how to check your blood sugar.Do I have to change my needle after each injection?Yes – never use a needle more than once. This will help guardagainst infections at the injection site and stop the needle frombecoming blocked.What if I am taking (or intend to take) other medicines at the sametime as Lantus?You should tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are taking, haverecently taken or might take any other medicines, as the effect of somemedicines might be affected by Lantus. REMEMBER Always carry a spare pen and spareneedles in case your current one getslost or damaged Always use a new sterile needle eachtime you inject Do not use a new pen straight out of thefridge as this will make your injection feeluncomfortable – wait at least one hour Never share your pen with anyoneelse – your Lantus SoloStar is meantfor you alone Never attempt to remove the insulinfrom your pen with a syringeReporting of side effects: If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor,pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in thepackage leaflet.
