These stringent conditionsare forcing innovation. The aim of this brochure is to introduce a variety of smart Finnish solutions and projects that Tekes hasco-funded. Thematic areas coveredare smart energy and buildings, smarttransport and mobility, and servicesrelated to these themes. Finnish SmartCities are also presented.Tekes has worked with the top innovative companies and research units inFinland. Every year, Tekes has financedsome 1,500 business research anddeve lopment projects, and almost600 public research projects at univer sities, research institutes and universities of applied sciences. Research, deve lopment and innovation fundingis targeted at projects that create inthe long-term the greatest benefits forthe economy and society. In 2018 Tekes and Finpro, the Finnishtrade promotion organization, will bemerged into a new organization withthe working title Business Finland.Business Finland will gather all services related to innovation fundingand the promotion of exports, investments and travel under one roof.WHYFINLAND? 1st in World Economic Forum’s HumanCapital Index (2015) 4th most competitive country in the world(WEF 2015) One of the innovation leaders in the EU(Innovation scoreboard 2015) Most stable society in the world(FPP 2014)SMART SOLUTIONS FROM FINLAND 3

SMARTTRANSPORTAND MOBILITYGOING PLACESThe world of mobility is changing rapidly. Urbanization has left cities strugglingwith congestion and air pollution. Social trends are pushing urban transformationtowards liveable and car-free cities. Servitization, electric vehicles and autonomouscars are making people rethink car ownership and how they move about. All thiscalls for a new mobility ecosystem.17 %In Finland approximatelyof household consumptionexpenditure is spent ontransport and mobility.4 SMART SOLUTIONS FROM FINLANDFinland is driving the revolution by developing smartsolutions for the new mobility ecosystem. From MaaSto autonomous driving, we already have many distruptivesolutions and services up and running. We also have manyopen testbeds and development environments welcominginnovative and ambitious partners from all over the world.Whether you’re a startup or an established player, now isthe time to seize the opportunity and be part of the futureof mobility.

MAASMobility as a Service (MaaS) is set tochange the way the world moves.Door-to-door mobility services willlet users see, book, pay and follow therealization of the travel chain. Finlandis a forerunner in MaaS services. Wewant to enable the seamless and efficient flow of information, goods andpeople.Different players are currently runningnumerous pilots and demonstrationsaround Finland, with many new companies providing MaaS services.AUTONOMOUS DRIVINGAND CONNECTIVITYWe’re not far from a time when owninga car will be less desirable than simplyordering a self-driving vehicle to yourdoor when required. Autonomousdriving is one of the most importantnew mobility technologies, and is setto shape a whole new economy andto provide a major option for last-milemobility services.Digitilalization, 5G and artificial intelligence are crucial components whendeveloping autonomous solutions.Finland has strongholds in all theseareas. The technologies still need deve lopment, and there are manypilots and demonstrations going on.Our open testing platforms let youtest new technologies and serviceconcepts and get ahead of the competition.ELECTRIC VEHICLESAND TRAFFICThe future is electric. Electric passenger vehicles are becoming mainstream in many markets, with publictransportation following suit. Heavymachinery companies have started tointroduce hybrid or pure electric workmachines to the market. New businesses have popped up to provideservices for electric vehicles and theecosystem. Electric Vehicles are also apart of the future smart grid and energy storage system.LIGHT VEHICLESMore and more people are commuting on a bicycle, and bike share programmes and electric bikes are gaining momentum as the best last milesolution. A new law in Finland allowsthe use of light electric vehicles inpublic places and lanes, boosting thedevelopment of light vehicle businesses.201projects co-funded by the Tekes Witty City-programme between 2013 and 2017.Whether you’re a startup or anestablished player, now is the time toseize the opportunity and be part of thefuture of mobility ecosystem in Finland.Finnish companies today providemany connectivity solutions for theauto motive industry.SMART SOLUTIONS FROM FINLAND 5
