1. Program overviewThe Innovation Campus Heidelberg Mannheim Health & Life Sciences thrives to promoteresearch and innovation through synergy – by bridging world-leading life science andbiomedical research institutions and by bringing together a highly diverse range of disciplinesand top researchers. Heidelberg University with its faculties of Medicine, Biosciences, andEngineering, the University Hospital Heidelberg (UKHD) and the University Hospital Mannheim(UMM), the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the European Molecular BiologyLaboratory (EMBL), the Max-Planck-Institute for Medical Research, and the Central Institutefor Mental Health (ZI Mannheim) have the common goal to develop the Rhein-Neckar regioninto a world-leading innovation cluster by supporting cutting-edge research and promotingtransfer of knowledge into new diagnostics and therapeutics. The participating researchinstitutions are located at the heart of a highly dynamic urban economic and industrial area.The Innovation Campus offers Postdoctoral Positions to outstanding junior scientists (PhD,MD) for bridging projects between at least two of the Innovation Campus institutions. Throughthis new inter-institutional program, we want you to excel in interdisciplinary research andprovide you access to high-end technologies and state-of-the-art labs. Expertise across theinstitutions offer you the unique opportunity to gain insight into transfer of knowledge anddevelopment of new applications.Do you want to work in a growing network of scientific excellence and transfer? Welook forward to your application!We invite you to choose from innovative, inter-institutional projects proposed by PIs of theInnovation Campus for this new initiative. Currently, a particular focus is on priority areas ofcancer research, cardiovascular research, neuropsychiatric diseases, genomics, syntheticimmunology, molecular engineering and medical technologies. Alternatively, you are alsowelcome to define your own research project with at least two PIs at two different institutionsof the Innovation Campus.The Innovation Campus member institutions are all committed to support you with careertraining and coaching programs. The trainings include advanced soft-skill courses as well ascareer development courses tailored to your needs. Equal opportunity & diversity programs aswell as mentoring and coaching are implemented at all participating institutions andsupplemented by programs to bridge research and development with industry.The Rhein-Neckar region is not only renowned for being one of Germany s top life scienceand medical hubs, but also for its quality of life: You find a vibrant cultural life and attractiveresidential and shopping areas as well as a large and diverse international community. Theregion is one of the sunniest areas in Germany, and the stunning landscape invites naturelovers for recreation and outdoor sport activities. It has a good public transportationinfrastructure and is well connected to several motorways and to Frankfurt International Airport.The wide variety of schooling (including international schools) and day-care facilities ensuresyour family feels comfortable. Many initiatives and associations offer a good balance betweenwork and live.The postdoctoral program is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts of the Stateof Baden-Württemberg.3

2. Eligibility criteria Outstanding scientific activitiesAt a minimum one first author paperComplete application with all requested documents (see 4.2)Applicants must have completed a PhD, MD/PhD or MD latest at the date of therecruitment.3. FundingFellows are employed at the institution of the hosting principal investigator (PI) who is thecoordinator. The second supervisor is the collaboration partner.Funding is provided for a maximum of two years for a postdoctoral position, including socialbenefits. Additional funding by host institutions can be used to extend the position. Hosting PIsare expected to provide funds for the research projects and further support.Please note: The latest start date of the 2-year work contract will be 1st January 2023.Fellows must report about the progress and highlights of their work midterm (1/2 page after 12months) and at the end of the contract. They agree that the short report will be publicly shared.4. Application procedureThe application process follows four steps:(1) Hosting institutionYou have two options to apply: A) You can choose from the list of proposed research projects offered by PIs of theInnovation Campus institutions. Please check through the list of research projects andchoose up to three projects that you are most interested in. You need to register onour website to be able to access the list of proposed research projects.B) You can submit your own research idea, but you are requested to discuss yourresearch proposal with at least two PIs of the Innovation Campus institutions beforesubmitting the application to make sure that it fosters synergies between labs of theInnovation Campus institutions. The respective PIs have to sign a support letter. Youfind the information about each institution’s research focus on the official websiteslisted in the Appendix (page 7).Please note: University hospitals and medical faculties of the same city are notconsidered as separate institutions for proposed research projects.(2) Application and InvitationApplicants must provide the following: CV and publication list with at least one publication as first author. Please use theinternational CV format (Personal information without portrait and birth date, Workexperience (institutions and PIs) in reverse chronological order, Education andTraining, Skills, Publications). Option A) In case you apply for proposed projects you must use the provided CoverLetter Template A. Please explain why you are the right candidate with the right skillsfor the Innovation Campus labs you want to work with and refer to the work plan.4

Option B) If you apply with your own project proposal, you must complete the providedResearch Proposal Template B including a Cover Letter. Please also get in contactwith the respective PIs of your interest and let the PIs sign the Support Letter.The following sections are included in the research proposal template: Project title and abstract (½ page) Background and significance of the project (maximum ½ page) Project main aims and impact (approximately ¼ page) Project description (maximum 1 page including 1 figure) Contributions of and to Innovation Campus Institutions. Please alsospecify what skills you will bring to the project and what newinterdisciplinary skills you will gain by completing it (approximately ¼page) References (maximum ½ page) A completed PhD or MD (scan of certificate) or the date of the doctoral examination(scan).Important notes: Project proposals not using the provided templates or exceeding the page limits areineligible and will not be evaluated.Please submit all documents combined into one single pdf in the following order:1. CV and publication list2. Option A – Cover Letter Template A (choose from proposed projects)or2. Option B – Research Proposal Template B (propose your own project) ANDSupport Letter scan (signed by PIs)3. PhD/ MD certificate or doctoral examination confirmation date (scan). Applications need to be submitted in English language.(3) Evaluation procedure of applicationsA committee of experts will perform the evaluation of your application. Applications arethen ranked to create a short-list of candidates invited for interview.Due to the Corona pandemic the interviews will be held online.(4) InterviewThe applicants will be invited to give a talk about their past and future research interests,followed by a short interview session.Additionally, applicants will be asked to arrange virtual lab visits with the PIs of their choiceto further discuss.After the interviews, the committee will provide an overall evaluation of the applicants,which will result in a list of offers and a ranked waiting list. Applicants are informed of theoutcome of the selection process shortly after the final evaluation.5

Ethical considerationsProjects requiring ethical approvals must have these in place prior to a fellow beginning theproject. The activities excluded from funding are activities that: aim at human cloning for reproductive purposes, or intend to modify the genetic heritage of human beings which could make such changesheritable (with the exception of research relating to cancer treatment of the gonads,which may be financed), or intend to create human embryos solely for the purpose of research or for the purposeof stem cell procurement, including by means of somatic cell nuclear transfer, or lead to the destruction of human embryos (for example, for obtaining stem cells)5.
