The Health LawAlumni Chapter officially launched on Feb.9, 2013 during a well-attended kickoff celebration in the Burns Lounge on campus.LOYOLA LAUNCHESProfessor Brietta Clark, who organizedthe event, said she was thrilled with theturnout and response, adding that a number of alumni “expressed their gratitudeand excitement about the creation of thechapter and wanted to know when thenext event would be.”Steven Goby ’89, in-house counsel at L.A.Care Health Plan in Los Angeles, receivedthe inaugural Alumni Mentor Award for histremendous public service and mentorship tostudents and alumni. Many of Goby’s formerand current mentees were in attendance.David Blake ‘92, vice president of corporate compliance at Cedars-Sinai, and VinceFarhat ‘96, a partner at Holland & Knight inLos Angeles, were also recognized for theirimportant contributions to the health lawprogram as adjunct professors.The new alumni chapter was launched at theurging of current Health Law and BioethicsAssociation (HLBA) student leaders Jenny Jiao‘13, Renee Kimm ‘13, David Lancaster ‘13,Puja Shah ‘13 and William Yee ‘13.Since 2004, the HLBA has focused on promoting awareness and career opportunities in health law among Loyola students.As the implementation of health carereform unfolds, it also organizes events toinform students about related legal issues.Professor Clark speaks to many youngalumni, especially those new to the healthlaw field, who are excited about thenetworking opportunities the chapterprovides.“They view it as a great way toreach out to more experienced alumnifor support and mentoring,” Clark said,“particularly in the face of new challengesand uncertainty created by health carereform implementation.“Clark said the group offers an avenue forexperienced alumni to reconnect withthe Law School and give back by mentoring students while also receiving professional development as demand increasesfor health law attorneys. The Health LawAlumni Chapter will also facilitate careernetworking for current students throughexperiential learning opportunities withalumni, who have played a critical rolein making government and in-houseexternships available to Loyola students.Traditionally, these positions have beenfew and far between. For instance, Gobyoversaw students working in the LicensingDivision of the Department of ManagedHealth Care, while Grace Oh ’99 and JulienKern ’10 placed Loyola students in positions at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.Additionally, Annie Hsu Shieh ‘09, seniorcompliance counsel at Central HealthPlan, started a Health Law Externshipand Summer Internship program at hercompany a few years ago. Since then,the program has hosted four talentedLoyola students who have returned tothe externship for multiple semesters.The Central Health Plan program is thefirst placement at a for-profit health carecompany available to Loyola students forcourse credit. Based on its success, Loyolais looking to expand Health Law Practicumopportunities to in-house legal departments at other health care companiesand to health law firms. In addition tothe Health Law Practicum, the Law Schoolis offering a new student program, theHealth Care Law Course of Study. TheCourse of Study Program is designed forstudents interested in learning about thelegal regulation of health care access,quality and cost.
