ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONIN ACTIONSoil and groundwater remediation guideline,KazakhstanOil gas processing and petrochemical complex,Azerbaijan.AECOM was appointed to evaluate various soiland water remediation strategies, in case of ahydrocarbon spill at an oil, gas and condensatefield northwest of Kazakhstan. The study wascarried out in two phases.Client: State Oil Company of Azerbaijan RepublicA vulnerability evaluation of the oil field areawas performed using DRASTIC parametricmethodologies, from this five sub-areas werecharacterized by their homogeneous vulnerabilityand geological settings. Potential exposurepathways and receptors were then identified andthe data was used to create a guideline decisionmatrix. The decision matrix identifed the bestremediation technologies to be applied in thecase of an oil spill. The matrix was based ontypical vulnerability and contaminationscenarios previously identified for each of the fivesub-areas.Remediation of a sludge waste lagoon, ItalyClient: ConfidentialAECOM provided the technical approach forthe remediation of a large lagoon containingsludge refinery waste in southern Italy. The siteremediation project was developed in two phases.First, the oil sludge removal and second- theremediation of the unsaturated soil below. This was achieved using thermal treatmenttechnology. During remediation AECOM’s rolewas to manage the technical environmentalaspects of the work, which included developinga characterization plan of the landfill areasurrounding the lagoon, risk assessments andall remedial design. The team co-ordinatedthird party field activities, evaluated contractorproposals, reviewed technical reports andprovided assistance where necessary.Having been appointed as the environmentalconsultant for a new oil gas processing andpetrochemical complex near Baku, AECOM wastasked with developing a ESIA in accordancewith national and international regulations andstandards. The ESIA included a full set of primary datacollected on-site to deepen the knowledge of theenvironment and potential communities affectedby the project activities. This allowed the team toassess environmental and social concerns andsuggest mitigation measures where appropriate.Decommissioning a floating production storageand offloading vessel, Aliaga-Izmir, Turkey.Client: SAIPEM S.p.AAECOM was commissioned by SAIPEM to managedecommissioning activities of the Firenzefloating production storage and offloadingvessel in Aliaga-Izmir, Turkey. The objectivewas to supervise and coordinate the vessel’sdecommissioning activities.Work included managing the removal of asbestosand hazardous waste materials, preparing daily, weekly and monthly reports on work progress, supervising disposal activities and conductingand monitoring assessments to evaluatecompliance and work progress. The ESIA ensured that any adverse effects tothe natural environment and local communitywere kept to a minimum during the design andoperation of the petrochemical complex. The team coordinated and supervised theactivities of 11 sub- contractors from fourdifferent countries, with an average of 20 peopleworking on site daily. The work performed wasconducted in line with European and US EPAstandards, including best management practices, which were successfully applied to the project.Sustainable solutions for a groundwatertreatment, ItalyEnvironmental and social impact assesment, offshore Togo, West AfricaClient: ConfidentialClient: ENIA Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) incentral Italy looked to us to retro-fit and upgradetheir facilities. The WWTP treats groundwaterfor contaminants such as mercury, nitrates, cadmium, selenium, zinc, TPH, BTEXS and CHC.The scope of work included a comparativeanalysis between two possible treatmentsolutions. The study included the developmentof a 3D hydro-dynamic contaminant transportmodel which was used to evaluate the impact ofdischarged water into the sea and an assessmentof environmental sustainability, using life cycleassessment, for the two possible treatmentoptions. The adopted approach permitted our client tosupport a cost saving solution, whilst ensuring theglobal environmental impact was minimalized.AECOM was appointed to undertake a series ofEnvironmental and Social Impact Assesments(ESIA’s) offshore Togo. The ESIA’s were legallyrequired by Togolese regulators to ensure a 3Dseismic acquisition campaign could take place. The ESIA set out requirements for the protectionof marine fauna during the seismic operations. The dedicated plan was aimed at monitoringmarine mammals and sea turtles and recordingany other animal occurrences and behaviors. Our team set up public consultations withstakeholders to illustrate the potentialenvironmental and social risks. The ESIA ensured that any adverse impact to theenvironment and local population was kept to aminimum during the seismic exploration project.

THROUGHOUT THE PROJECTLIFECYCLE, WE WILL CUSTOMIZEOUR SERVICES TO MEET YOURUNIQUE REQUIREMENTS.Environmental baseline study, Uganda. Client: TOTAL E&P Uganda B.VAECOM performed an intensive survey project in the Lake Albert region in Uganda whereoil resources have been discovered. AECOM developed Environmental Baseline Study(EBS) covering a large area lying on both the east and west banks of the Albert Nile River. The area stretched 3,600km2 inland and included Uganda’s largest and oldest gamereserve, the Murchison Falls National Park. The purpose of the EBS was to draw up a comprehensive inventory of biological, physicaland chemical characteristics of the environment and document this data for futureenvironmental and social impact assessments. The survey included the examination ofsoil, water, noise and air quality throughout different seasons of the year.Medgaz pipeline installation, Spain and Algeria. Client: SAIPEM S.p.AAECOM delivered environmental consulting services for a marine pipeline running fromAlgeria to Spain along the Mediterranean seabed. The project included the installationof a 210km natural gas pipeline in ultra-deep water. The installation included dredging, pulling, earth-moving and backfilling activities.Prior to the pipeline installation the team developed an environmental monitoring planthat included all the environmental activities that were to be carried out during the pipelaying operation. The plan exposed the impact that the dredging and backfilling activitieswould have on the biosciences in the area, particularly the sea-grasses.Campaigns to monitor the environmental impact of the pipeline were carried out before, during and after the installation. AECOM’s team ensured that the natural gas pipelinewas installed with minimum impact to the environment. The pipeline is now operationaland delivers natural gas to Europe.Decommissioning a floating production storage and offloading vessel, Aliaga-Izmir,Turkey. Client: SAIPEM S.p.AAECOM was commissioned by SAIPEM to manage decommissioning activities of theFirenze floating production storage and offloading vessel in Aliaga-Izmir, Turkey. Theobjective was to supervise and coordinate the vessel’s decommissioning activities.Work included managing the removal of asbestos and hazardous waste materials, preparing daily, weekly and monthly reports on work progress, supervising disposalactivities and conducting and monitoring assessments to evaluate compliance and workprogress.AECOM’s team coordinated and supervised the activities of 11 sub-contractors fromfour different countries, with an average of 20 people working on site daily. The workperformed was conducted in line with European and US EPA standards, including bestmanagement practices, which were successfully applied to the project.
