ABOUT THE CONFERENCEOftentimes, the situations and circumstanceswe experience are largely outside of ourcontrol. Health disparities and health equityaffect each of us in many ways: socially,economically, politically and geographically.The interventions that target these areas arecritical to improving health outcomes. The 12thHealth Disparities Conference will be a hubfor information exchange in addressing healthoutcomes and the integration of upstreamingand downstreaming approaches across thelife course.while downstream determinants of healthdisparities are those factors which have a director indirect effect on personal health outcomes.An “upstream” approach to preventing healthdisparities uses interventions which targetchanges to the natural, built, social, and policyenvironments which create and/or supportconditions that lead to disparate health outcomesamong populations, while a “downstream”approach to preventing health disparities usesinterventions that target change at the individuallevel in knowledge, attitudes and/or behaviors.This year’s opening plenary includes executiveThe overall goal of this conference is to enableleadership from AARP, AMA, APhA, and NMA,participants to become knowledgeable aboutand will be moderated by theChief Medical Officer for WebMD.We encourage you to attendsessions on data science and digitalHealth disparities and healthinnovation; intersectionality of socialequity affect each of us in manyjustice; opioids, substance use, andmental health; adverse childhoodways: socially, economically,experiences; HIV and Sexual Health;politically and geographically.mobilizing community partnerships;translational health equity science;and policy. The Student PosterCompetition and Awards Recognition Ceremonyupstream and downstream approaches toare must-attend events, and do not miss thepreventing health disparities across the lifepre-conference symposium on grant proposalcourse and ways to integrate them in order todevelopment!provide a more comprehensive approach. Atthe end of the conference, participants will haveUpstream determinants of health disparitiesa better understanding of how to incorporateare social, economic, and political factors,both upstream and downstream approacheslargely outside the control of the individual,across the life course in preventing disparatewhich have significant direct and indirecthealth outcomes at both an individual andeffects on populations experiencing them,population level.2
