HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTMr. Benjamin L. CrumpBenjamin (“Ben”) Crump, Attorney and Founder andPresident of Ben Crump Law, has been listed amongst the MostInfluential People of 2021 by TIME100, Ebony Magazine’s Power 100Most Influential African Americans, The National Trial Lawyers Top100 Lawyers, and the 2014 NNPA Newsmaker of the Year. Mr. Crumpis referred to as Black America’s Attorney General. Through a steadfastdedication to justice and service, renowned civil rights and personal injuryattorney Crump has established himself as one of the nation’s foremostlawyers and advocates for social justice. His legal acumen has ensured thatthose marginalized in American society are protected by their nation’scontract with its constituency.Attorney and Public Servant6 2022 COMMENCEMENTCrump’s tireless advocacy has led to legislation preventing excessive forceand developing implicit bias training and policies. He has representedfamilies in several high-profile civil rights cases including Trayvon Martin,who was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida,in 2012; Michael Brown, who was killed by a law enforcement officer inFerguson, Missouri, in 2014; and Stephon Clark, who was killed by policeofficers in Sacramento, California, in 2018. Crump represented nineof the 13 black women who were victims in the Holtzclaw OklahomaCity Police rape case in 2015 and worked on the precedent-setting U.S.Supreme Court case involving excessive police force against Robbie Tolanin 2008. Most recently, Attorney Crump has represented the families ofAhmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, the residents of Flint,Michigan, who were affected by the poisoned water of the Flint River,as well as the family of Henrietta Lacks in a landmark reparations case.He has helped reach historic settlements and verdicts for families thathave faced injustices, including a 411 million verdict for DuaneWashington who was horribly injured in a truck accident; a 641 millionsettlement for the children of Flint, Michigan; a 27 million settlementfor the family of George Floyd; a 12 million settlement for the family ofBreonna Taylor; and over 200 million in settlements in banking whileBlack cases, among others.Crump is the President of the National Civil Rights Trial LawyersAssociation and previously served as President of the National BarAssociation. He was the first African American to chair the FloridaState University College of Law Board of Directors and is the founderand director of the Benjamin Crump Social Justice Institute. In 2021,St. Thomas University College of Law, one of the most diverse lawschools in the nation, announced the Benjamin L. Crump Center forSocial Justice in his honor, which will open doors for minority studentspursuing law degrees.Among dozens of accomplishments, Attorney Crump has beenrecognized with the NAACP Thurgood Marshall Award, the SCLCMartin Luther King Servant Leader Award, the American Associationfor Justice Johnnie Cochran Award, and the Alpha Kappa AlphaEleanor Roosevelt Medallion for Service.He hosted the critically acclaimed legal docudramas “Evidence ofInnocence” on TVOne and “Who Killed Tupac: The Search ForJustice” on A&E, and served as executive producer and writer for thedocumentary, “Woman in Motion,” about Nichelle Nichols, one ofthe first African-American TV actresses (“Star Trek”). He is a frequentcontributor to MSNBC, CNN, and USA Today.Crump’s book, published in October 2019, Open Season: LegalizedGenocide of Colored People, reflects on the landmark cases he hasbattled, and how discrimination in the courthouse devastates realfamilies and communities.Crump graduated from Florida State University and received hislaw degree from FSU College of Law. ACADEMIC REGALIAThe history of academic regalia goes back morethan seven centuries to the medieval universitiesof Salamanca, Paris, Bologna, Oxford, andCambridge. Students and teachers were requiredto wear distinctive dress, the details of which wereprescribed by university statutes, to distinguishthe different degrees of learning and the variousfaculties.Academic regalia was worn in the United States incolonial days, but gradually they came to be usedonly for special occasions, such as commencementexcercises and presidential inaugurations.Some examples of the colors established by theCode are as follows:To promote uniformity in design, colors, andmaterials in academic dress, a commissionrepresenting leading American colleges producedThe Intercollegiate Code in 1895. The codewas revised several times, most recently in 1986.Although the Code is not obligatory, mosteducational institutions in this country follow it.The code provides for three types of gowns.The bachelor’s gown has long, pointed sleeves;the master’s gown has short sleeves with trailingelbows; and the doctor’s gown has bell-shapedsleeves.
