Welcome to WICWIC is a Nutrition Program for Women,Infants, and Children. WIC serves pregnantwomen, women who have recently beenpregnant, infants, and children up to their5th birthday.Moms, dads, grandparents, foster parents, other caregivers,and guardians may apply for the children they are raising.Many working families, including military and migrantworkers, as well as families that have private healthinsurance, are surprised to learn that they qualify for WIC.WIC provides benefits for a variety of nutritiousfoods, nutrition education, support forbreastfeeding, and referrals to otherservices in your community.2

About YourWIC VisitWhen enrolling in WIC or recertifying for WIC benefits, WICstaff will ask for information to verify your eligibility.WIC staff may ask you to bring: Your infant or child to the WIC office. Proof of your family’s household income. Proof of your address. Identification. Medical forms filled out by your health care provider. Proof of pregnancy.At WIC appointments you receive your WIC food benefitsand attend a group class or get one-on-one education.Topics the WIC educator or nutritionist may talk aboutinclude healthy eating and cooking and how to be active.You will learn what to expect from your infant or toddler’sfeeding, and how to get breastfeeding off to a good start.3

What if I cannot come tomy WIC appointment?Call your local WIC office to reschedule. You also can senda caretaker. A caretaker is a person you choose who can goto your WIC appointments and shop for you.4 WIC staff need to know the name of your caretakerso they can keep your WIC file up to date. Your caretaker may complete recertification orfollow-up appointments. Your caretaker must show his or her identificationat the WIC office.

Using YourCalifornia WICCardAt the WIC office you receivea reusable California WIC Card.All your family’s WIC foodbenefits are together on oneWIC Card. The WIC Card is likea debit card and makesshopping easy. Keep your WICCard safe. Use yourPIN with your WIC Card every time you shop for your WICfoods. Choose a PIN that is easy for you to remember andhard for others to guess.5

Keep your PIN safe: Do not write your PIN on your WIC Card or anythingyou keep with your WIC Card. Do not share your PIN with others. If you havesomeone shop for you, share your PIN only with aperson that you trust. Carefully enter your PIN at the store. You have 4chances to enter it correctly. After 4 tries, your WICCard will be locked and you will not be able to getyour WIC foods. Call the toll-free number on the backof your card for help. Locking the WIC Card protectsagainst someone trying to guess your PIN and gettingyour food benefits.When someone learns your PIN withoutyour approval, you will need to changeyour PIN. If someone takes your WIC Cardand knows your PIN, they could get yourWIC foods. Any WIC foods purchased bysomeone else, before you report your WICCard lost or stolen, will notbe replaced.4 1 8 26

Your WIC Food BalanceYour WIC Food Balance shows the foods and theamounts available to your family every month. As youshop and use your WIC foods, your Food Balance willchange. Be sure to shop for all of the foods in your WICFood Balance before they expire.There are many ways to find your WIC Food Balance:Use the free California WIC Appon your smart phone.Get a printout at your WIC office.Look at your store receipt from yourlast shopping trip.Ask the cashier or customer service desk atthe store to print out your WIC Food Balance.Call the toll-free number on the backof your WIC Card, 1-844-4MY-FAMILY or1-844-469-3264.Go online to www.myfamily.wic.ca.gov.7

Pay close attention to the start and enddates of your family food benefits. Your WICfood benefits are good for 30 days and expireat midnight on the end date. Benefits do notcarry over to the next month.Finding a WICAuthorized StoreUse your WIC Card only at storesauthorized to accept WIC. To finda WIC authorized grocery store:8 Use the free California WIC Appon your smart phone. Go online towww.myfamily.wic.ca.gov. Look for a WIC logo nearthe front door or window ofthe store. Ask your local WIC office fora list of stores in your area.

At the StoreYou can use your WIC Card to get just what you need ateach shopping trip. There are many ways to check thebrands, sizes, and types of WIC foods you can get: Use the free California WIC App to scan the packagebarcode. Look at your WIC Shopping Guide. Ask a store employee for help. Separate your WIC foods from your nonWIC items as you shop. Keeping your WICfoods separate will make checking outeasier. Some stores may have to scan yourWIC foods first.9

Checking out at theGrocery StoreStores have slightly different checkout systems.Follow the instructions from the cashier at your store.Start your checkout:Separate your WIC foods from yournon-WIC items. Some stores may needto scan your WIC items first.Tell the cashier you are using yourWIC Card.Ask the cashier when to swipeyour WIC Card and enter your PIN.Always swipe your WIC Card first beforeusing other forms of payment, such asCalFresh, debit card or cash.Pay close attention as the cashierscans each WIC item.1010

After the cashier scans all your items:Look over your WIC purchases and makesure all items are correct before your sale istotaled. The cashier may give you a receiptor show you a screen to review.Confirm all your purchases are correct usingthe card machine. Any foods not available inyour WIC Food Balance can be put back orbought using another form of payment.Tell the cashier if you want to putsomething back before the cashiergives you the final receipt.Give the cashier your store loyalty cardand any coupons you have.Pay for any non-WIC items using anotherform of payment.Wait for the cashier to complete the saleand give you a final receipt. Save yourreceipt in a safe place, such as your wallet.11

Easy Cheesy BurritosMakes 2Ingredients:2 eggs2 tablespoons watersalt and pepper to taste1 tablespoon oil2 small whole wheat tortillas¼ cup shredded cheese½ cup prepared salsaDirections:1. In a small bowl, stir together eggs, water, salt, andpepper. Set aside.2. Sprinkle each tortilla with ½ of the cheese.3. In a pan, warm oil over medium-high heat. Pour in eggmixture. Stir gently until cooked through and no liquidegg remains.4. Spoon eggs onto tortillas, dividing equally between thetwo tortillas. Roll up like a burrito.5.
