IntroductionThis Trainer’s Manual has been developed to assist trainers in the teachingof the FaithLife Ministries Discipleship For Church Leaders manual. While trainers are free to train according to their own preferences andunderstanding of this material, it is hoped that this guide will give you theauthor’s perspective on how to best cover the material in this manual, andthe intent of the author in its development. We highly recommend thattrainers use this manual along with their own background and experience toteach this material and its Biblical foundation.FaithLife Ministries has been training church and ministry leaders in themission field since 1996. This manual grew out of our recognition fromseveral years working with church leaders in various countries of the lack ofgood discipleship training material or resources. It was also apparent thatthere was not much of this material even available or being taught at present. Therefore, since many pastors and leaders in underdeveloped countries lackthe access to basic discipleship training materials, FaithLife Ministries hasdeveloped this training manual to fill this need. The material in this training manual has been designed to provide a basiclevel of understanding and training in discipleship tools and techniques. It isthe author’s intent to provide a foundation for discipleship and to encouragereaders and students to apply these Biblical principles to each uniquesituation as guided by the Holy Spirit. 2017 by Barry Voss, FaithLife Ministries, Inc.All rights reserved. General Trainer Notes1. The training manual is designed around 3 major themes: discipleshipfoundations, discipleship principles, and discipleship for the church.2. I would encourage you to use Biblical examples and illustrationswherever possible, as it will reinforce the Scriptural foundation andprovide a common reference for all students.3. Tell them that everything we teach is in the manual, along with allScriptures. It is meant to also be a reference book they can refer back toafter the training. It is theirs to keep, and they are permitted to makecopies to give to others.4. Teaching and exercise times are suggestions. The important thing is tobalance the teaching with the application of the principles via smallgroup discussions, large group questions, and the exercises. Spendingtoo much time on only one aspect dilutes the effectiveness of the training.5. At the end of each section I have provided review questions to test theparticipants on what was taught. These can be done in a large group atthe end of each section or just before the beginning of the next section. The idea is to make sure they understand the basics principles we areteaching, and to reinforce them.6. At the end of each section encourage each student to write down 4 actionpoints they will commit to do when they return home. This should bedone at the end of each section (or each day) so that at the end of thetraining the students will each have 12 things they learned or will dowhen they get back to their ministries.7. Please email me at barryvoss@comcast.net with your feedback andsuggestions on anything that you learn when training this material. Wewill consider it for future revisions and teaching development.Page 4

Chapter 1Spiritual ReproductionPurpose:The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the concept ofspiritual reproduction and the need to multiply ourselves.Time Use:It should take about 60 minutes to cover the material. Please allow another 15 minutes for the exercise.Key Points:1. The goal of every leader is to make disciples.2. Spiritual reproduction has priorities.3. Spiritual reproduction starts with leaders.Notes:1. Only disciples can make other disciples.2. Modeling and participation are keys to discipleship.3. Testimonies are an effective tool for discipleship.“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations ”Matthew 28:19Read or paraphrase.Tell them it essentialfor church survival toreproduce our faith inothers. In Matthew 28:19 Jesus commands all His followers to “go and makedisciples of all nations.” This is the Great Commission and is the sole purposeof the Church. We are not told to go make church members, or purely invitepeople to church with us. It goes far beyond that. It means that we will needto invest ourselves in the lives of those we witness to for Christ, and bring toHis altar. However, we can’t possibly spend enough time with every churchmember or visitor we encounter. Therefore, we will need to multiplyourselves. We will need to make disciples who will make other disciples, andso multiply our efforts and grow our churches. This is exactly what Paul toldTimothy in his second letter to him in chapter 2, verse 2, to teach others whathe has been taught. Spiritual reproduction, then, is about making disciples. Ifwe do not pass on our faith and the teachings of Jesus and the Bible, we areone generation away from Christianity become non-existent. Our Christianfaith is not meant to be practiced in private. It is meant to be shared and givenaway!ASK: How many of you are actively reproducing yourselftoday?Page 7

The goal is not tomake churchmembers!Discipleship is the #1priority of the church.A. The goal of every believer is to make disciples.1. To obey Jesus’ command in Matthew 28:19-20a. To preach the gospel message of salvationb. To teach His followers to obey His commands2. To grow the churcha. To reach this generation for Christb. To reach the nations for Christ“And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in allJudea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts1:83. To influence the worlda. Shine His Light (“Let your light shine before men.” Matthew 5:16)b. Be His hands and feetYou can’t give toothers what youyourself do not have.4. To pass on the faith to the next generation5. Only disciples can make other disciplesB. Spiritual Reproduction has prioritiesSpiritual reproductionbegins in the family.1. A believer must disciple one’s own family first“If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?” – 1 Timothy 3:52. A believer disciples other church members seconda. To develop more leaders who will also make disciplesb. To grow God’s kingdom through multiplication“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to allpeople, especially those who belong to the family ofbelievers.” - Galatians 6:103. A believer disciples others lasta. Non-believersb. Co-workersC. Spiritual reproduction in the church starts with leaders.Discipleship is aprimary function ofevery church leader.“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of manywitnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teachothers.” - 2 Timothy 2:2Page 8

1. The primary focus of every church leader should be to makedisciplesa. It is not just to lead their ministry or direct its activitiesb. It applies to every ministry leader (youth, worship, elder,etc.)2. Every leader is responsible for the faith of their followersa. Incorporate Scripture into every meetingb. Teach what it means or how it applies to their lives3. Every leader must model Christ to their followersD. The 8 Keys for effective discipleship. Here are 8 keys for church leaders to effectively make disciples:Without the desire tosee others grow infaith, they likelywon’t.1. Desire - A leader must have the desire to disciple others“My dear children, for whom I am in the pains of childbirthuntil Christ is formed in you.” – Galatians 4:19a. You must want to see Christ formed in othersb. You must be willing to give it your time and effortWithout a plan successis more difficult.2. Plan – A leader must develop a plan for discipleship“But the noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deedshe stands.”- Isaiah 32:8a. Set goals & measurementsb. Determine a process to useTo teach the Word aleader must know theWord.3. Teach – A leader must teach the Word to others“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so thatthe man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every goodwork.” - 2 Tim. 3:16-17a. Tell & show others what God’s Word saysb. Lead a devotion before every meeting or activityc. Develop a list of scriptural references for your ministry4. Model – A leader must model Jesus to othersPage 9

Share a story aboutmodeling Jesus.“Not lording it over those entrusted to you, but beingexamples to the flock.” - 1 Peter 5:3a. A leader must be an example to othersb. A leader must serve others (Matthew 20:28)Be proactive and seekothers to mentor.5. Mentor – A leader should mentor others“Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season;correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience andcareful instruction.” - 2 Timothy 4:2a. Identify a few people you can mentorb. Spend time with those you mentorc. Develop a process or program for mentoring othersPeople often learn bestby doing andparticipating.6. Participation – A leader finds ways to get followers to participatein ministry“In the same way, faith by itself, if not accompanied byaction, is dead.” – James 2:17a. Participation builds awareness of Godb. Serving others develops a heart for Godc. Involvement in ministry strengthens one’s faithWe often learn moreabout God from howhe works in the livesof others than simplylistening to a sermon.7. Testimonies – A leader uses testimonies often to encourage people“But in your heart set apart Christ as Lord. Always beprepared to give an answer to anyone who asks you to givethe reason for the hope that you have. But do this withgentleness and respect.” – 1 Peter 3:15a. Share what God is doing in the lives of His peopleb. Encourage written or spoken testimonies in worship ormeetingsSmall groups providetrust and closeness toenable open dialog.8. Small Groups – A leader encourages followers to join small groups“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habitof doing, but let us encourage one another.”– Hebrews 10:25a. Allows for more intimate sharingb. Builds accountability and mutual concernc. Develops a spiritual support systemPage 10

The blessings ofseeing another personcome to, and grow, infaith are incredible.E. Spiritual reproduction is very rewarding.“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of theHarvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” –Luke 10:21. You will be blesseda. By seeing more dedicated workers for the harvestb. By seeing ministry accomplished by othersc. By seeing more people involved in your ministryd. By seeing strong families of faith in your churche. By experiencing God using you to bless othersASK: Does seeing others grow excite you or threaten you?2. The people you disciple will be blessed.a. With personal spiritual growthb. By being in a more personal and intimate relationship with Godc. By serving othersd. By using their spiritual gifts for the Lord and the churche. By experiencing God using them to bless othersPage 11

Chapter 2ObedienceRead Scripture.Read the story.Purpose:The purpose of this chapter is to stress the importance ofobedience for the Christian leader.Time Use:It should take about 60 minutes to cover the material. Please allow another 15 minutes for the exercise.Key Points:1. We would often rather lead than follow.2. It is often our own pride and doubt that prevents us frombeing obedient.3. Obedience leads to humility and submission.4. Disobedience leads to pain and suffering.Notes:1. When we submit, God acts!2. Blessings from God come through obedience.“Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and obey it.”– Luke 11:28In July 1976, Israeli commandos made a daring raid at an airport in Entebbe,Uganda, in which 103 Jewish hostages were freed. In less than 15 minutes, thesoldiers had killed all 7 of the kidnappers and set the captives free. As successful asthe rescue was, however, three of the hostages were killed during the raid. As thecommandos entered the terminal, they shouted in Hebrew, “Get down! Crawl!” TheJewish hostages understood and lay down on the floor, while the guerillas, who didnot speak Hebrew, were left standing. Quickly the rescuers shot the uprightkidnappers. But two of the hostages hesitated – perhaps to see what was happening – and werealso shot and killed. One young man was lying down and actually stood up when thecommandos entered the airport. He, too, was shot with the bullets meant for theenemy. Had these three heeded the soldier’s command, they would have been freedwith the rest of the captives.Salvation is open to all of us, but we must be obedient to Christ’s command to repentand make Him Lord. Otherwise, like these hostages, we will perish with thejudgement meant for the Enemy!Page 13

Read or paraphrase.Because God is the giver of all good things (James 1:17) and apart from Himwe can do nothing (John 15:5), God is not impressed with ouraccomplishments. What God is truly impressed with is our obedience.Throughout the Old Testament God is continually frustrated by thedisobedience of the Israelites, His chosen people. He still longs for ourobedience today, just like any parent longs for the obedience of their children.God is so pleased when we obey Him, His commands, and His Son Jesus. Hiscommands are designed to bless us, not to limit or harm us. They are for ourbenefit. Consequently, as Luke 11:28 says, we are blessed by our obedience. And as Jesus said in John 14:15, “if you love me you will obey what Icommand.”ASK: What are some reasons we are not obedient?A. Introduction – Why are we not obedient?Men, particularly, tendto have control issues. Our Pride often gets inthe way.We think we knowbetter!1. We want to be our own bossa. We want to make our own choicesb. We want to be in control (i.e. – have the remote)c. We are taught to be independent2. It is often very hard to submit to othersa. Others don’t know us or our desiresb. Submission is thought of as weaknessc. We don’t like dealing with consequences of othersdecisions3. We do not respect authoritya. We no longer trust or respect our leaders Government Business Churchb. Many leaders abuse their authorityc. Many people see leaders as the reason for their plight in lifeB. Who are we told to obey?1. Goda. Submit yourselves to God“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil andhe will flee from you.” - James 4:7Page 14

b. Listen to His Word and obey it“Blessed are those who hear the Word of God andobey it.” – Luke 11:28In the New TestamentJesus gave 50Commands.2. Jesusa. If you love Him you will obey Him“If you love me, you will obey what I command.” –John 14:15b.Children often learn bywatching and imitatingtheir parents.3. Parentsa. It is right“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this isright.”- Ephesians 6:1b.We are also told toobey other leaders. It pleases the Lord“Children, obey your parents in everything, for thispleases the Lord.” - Colossians 3:204. Leadersa. To make their work a joy“Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give anaccount. Obey them so that their work will be a joy,not a burden, for that would be of no advantage toyou.” – Hebrews 13:17b.We should alwaysrespect those inauthority, even if wedisagree with them.Obedience comes from faith“Through Him and for His name’s sake, we receivedgrace and apostleship to call people from among allthe Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.” Romans 1:5To win their favor“Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; anddo it, not only when their eye is on you and to wintheir favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverencefor the Lord.” – Colossians 3:225. Those in Authoritya. They were established by God“Everyone must submit himself to the governingauthorities, for there is no authority except that whichGod has established. The authorities that exist havebeen established by God.”– Romans 13:1Page 15

b.Give examples of eachfrom your own life.To do the will of God“Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect andfear Obey them not only to win their favor whentheir eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing thewill of God from your heart.”- Ephesians 6:5a, 6C. What causes us to be disobedient?1. Doubt - We don’t trust the leadera. We are not sure about their motivesb. We don’t agree with their judgement2. Arrogance – We think we know better than they doa. We believe that we have the right answerb. We think we know more than they do3. Selfishness – We want things done our waya. We are unwilling to accept the ways of othersb. It’s our way or the highway4. Pride – We want to be the one in controla. We desire a stake in our own futureb. We don’t want our circumstances dictated by others5. Fear – We are afraid of the outcomea. We don’t like the potential impact on our livesb. We don’t want to assume the risks of othersASK: What else might cause us to disobey?Galatians 5:16-17Being “in the flesh”prevents us fromobedience.D. How can we become more obedient?1. Deny selfa. Jesus said to take up our cross“Then He said to them all; if anyone would come afterme, he must deny himself and take up his cross dailyand follow me.”– Luke 9:23b. Turn out hearts towards His statutes“Turn my heart toward your statutes and not towardselfish gain.” – Psalm 119:36Page 16

Serve othersa. Serve one another in love“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do notuse your freedom to indulge in the sinful nature;rather, serve one another in love.” – Galatians 5:13b. To gain assurance in one’s faith“Those who have served well gain an excellentstanding and great assurance in their faith in ChristJesus.” – 1 Timothy 3:13c. To be great in the Kingdom“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to be greatamong you must become your servant.” – Matthew20:26We must trainourselves!(1 Corinthians 9:27)Be a student and doerof the Word.3. Study the Word and apply ita. To train in righteousness“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful forteaching, rebuking, correcting and training inrighteousness, so that the men of God will bethoroughly equipped for every good work.”- 2 Timothy 3:16-17b. To keep your way pure“How can a young man keep his way pure? By livingaccording to your word.” - Psalm 119:9c. To gain understanding“Give me understanding, and I will keep your law andobey it with all my heart.” - Psalm 119:344. Seek God’s Wisdom through Prayera. Ask God for help“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything,by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, presentyour requests to God.”– Philippians 4:6Page 17

b. He will help you“May He give you the desire of your heart and makeall your plans succeed.” – Psalm 20:4Obedience leads toGod’s protection.E. Why should we be obedient?1. To avoid pain and sufferinga. Our ways lead to death“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in theend it leads to death.” – Proverbs 14:12b. Our foolishness leads to harm“He who walks with the wise grows wise, but acompanion of fools suffers harm.” – Proverbs 13:202. To develop patience and endurancea. All these blessings will come upon you andaccompany you if you obey the Lord your God.”- Deuteronomy 28:1-2ASK: Can you think of any other reasons to be obedient?John 14:21 (He wholoves me will be lovedby my Father, and Itoo will love him andshow myself to him)God desires to bless each and every one of us with His blessings that areendless and bountiful. To receive them, we need to be obedient to him. Wehave his Word and his commands, and even though it will be hard, He hasgiven us His Holy Spirit to help us. Let’s commit ourselves to a life ofobedience today – right now – and ask the Lord to show us His way, everyday, so that we may not perish with the Enemy, but receive his abundantblessings.Page 19

Chapter 3HumilityPurpose:The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the importance ofhumility and submission to God.Time Use:It should take about 60 minutes to cover the material. Please allow another 15 minutes for the exercise.Key Points:1.2.3.4.Notes:1. Only the Holy Spirit can keep us humble.2 Focus on God & others and not ourselves.Humility is a command for all Christians.Humility is a characteristic of Jesus.Leaders must be humble.Humility is difficult for us because of our sinful nature.“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.”James 4:10Read the introduction.(Yes, self-confidenceis knowing yourcapabilities. Humilityis not boasting aboutthem.)God’s Word says in in Proverbs 8:13 that “I hate pride and arrogance.”Those are pretty strong words but they echo the first commandment, which isthat we shall have no other gods before Him. God is our Creator, and theCreator of everything, and so He is justifiably angry when we try to replaceHim with something else, usually ourselves. You see it is pride and arrogancethat causes us to think more highly of ourselves than we ought (Romans12:3). It is our nature to take credit for things that truly belong to God. Goddesires His children to be humble and to submit to Him. He also wants us tosubmit to others just like His Son Jesus did. Perhaps the greatest example ofthis in recent times is Mother Teresa, who selflessly gave of herself to thepoorest in India. Jesus also confirmed this when He said, “But many who arefirst will be last, and the last first.” (Mark 10:31) To follow Jesus meansthat we must deny ourselves, put away our pride, and be humble, just as Hewas. Humility, therefore, is a foundational quality of being a disciple of Jesus.ASK: Can a person be humble AND self-confident?Page 21

A. Introduction1. What is the definition of humility? We cannot be humble ifwe are prideful.“True humility is notthinking less ofyourself, it is thinkingof yourself less.”– Rick Warren-According to Webster’s Dictionary, Humble means: not proud or haughty, not arrogant or assertive reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of deference orsubmission ranking low in a hierarchy or scale: insignificant, unpretentious not costly or luxurious2. We have 3 questions to answer in this session:a. Why is humility important?b. What does the Bible say about humility?c. How can we live as humble people?ASK: Why do you think humility is important?B. Why Is Humility So Important?Pride is always a matterof self- promotion.1. For All Peoplea. Pride goes before the fall“Pride goes before destruction” – Proverbs 16:18 You fall farther from a higher perchWe set ourselves up for attack from othersb. Pride leads to arrogance, bigotry, and prejudice Others will not like you You hurt others by your words and actionsc. There will always be someone better than you2. For Christians“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – andthis is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works,so that no one can boast.” - Ephesians 2:8-9We did not, and cannot, save ourselves!a. To recognize God, not ourselves, as responsible for oursalvation We did nothing .He did everything! To avoid “works righteousness”Page 22

We push God off thethrone of our liveswhen we take pride inourselves or in ouraccomplishments.b. To recognize God, not ourselves, as responsible for ourachievements“So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” – 1 Corinthians3:7 It’s the Holy Spirit working in and through us thataccomplishes God’s willWe are merely instruments, not catalystsc. To prevent us from boasting in our own efforts When we boast in ourselves we dishonor God When we say “I” it is God we deny!d. A disciple must follow Jesus’ teachings and be humble like Hewas3. For Pastors & Leaders“The important thing is that in every way, whether from falsemotives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this Irejoice.” – Phil. 1:18God should always getALL of the credit.a. To enable others to see Jesus, not us Others can’t see Jesus when we are standing in the way It is God’s ministry, not ours Their salvation is dependent upon Jesus, not youb. To lead as Jesus led Jesus glorified God, not himself Jesus came to serve, not to be served (Matthew 20:28)c. To keep them from falling into sin As leaders you will be targets (2 Timothy 3:12) The devil wants to devour you (1 Peter 5:8)d. To prevent them from leading others astray You are responsible for others (Matthew 18:6-7) Do not compromise the truth (2 Timothy 4:3)ASK: What do you personally take great pride in?Page 23

C. What Does the Bible say about Humility?1. There is a drastic difference between Scripture and the “World”We should not be likethe world (1 John2:15)The World says If it’s to be it’s up to METhe squeaky wheel gets the greaseThe one who dies with the most toyswinsThe early bird catches the wormWith l

1. The training manual is designed around 3 major themes: discipleship foundations, discipleship principles, and discipleship for the church. 2. I would encourage you to use Biblical examples and illustrations wherever possible, as it will reinforce the Scriptural found
