ResuscitaƟon Sciences Training CenterResuscita on Quality Improvement (RQI) Program Starts in 2016The Resuscita on Sciences Training Center (RSTC)increased its numbers trained for the fi h year in a row.In 2016, 6,511 learners received AHA training through theRSTC.The training numbers included: 3,933 in Basic Life Support (BLS)1,185 in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)580 in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)813 enrolled in Resuscita on Quality Improvement(RQI) Program217 AHA instructors maintain their cer fica on throughthe RSTC. This includes: 164 BLS Instructors 77 ACLS Instructors 57 PALS InstructorsThere has been five years ofsteady growth in the numberof people engaged with RSTCprograms at the Penn StateMilton S. Hershey MedicalCenter. 2017 marked theintroduc on of the RQIsystem for Basic Life Support(BLS) cer fica on whichis why the BLS classroomcourse numbers for 2017dropped.In January of 2016, the RSTC introducedthe American Heart Associa on (AHA)Resuscita on Quality Improvement (RQI)program for maintenance of CPR cer fica on.This innova ve program replaces tradi onalBasic Life Support (BLS) courses with short (10minute) sessions every three months. Thesesessions are conducted on manikins thatprovide CPR coaching and track performance. The RQI program has two main advantages.First, instead of taking several hours every twoyears away from the work site for refreshertraining, par cipantscan keep theircer fica on ac vewithout having toleave the unit ordedicate a significantblock of me to therenewal sessions.Second, skill degrada on over the tradi onaltwo year period is well established. Byinterac ng with manikins every quarter, skilllevels stay higher, leading to be er preparedrescuers. At the end of 2016 there were 813 individualsfrom 12 medical center departments enrolledin the program. The RSTCmanages four RQI carts thatare rotated between thedepartments.Penn State Hershey Medical Center staff par cipated in “Superuser”training in January 2016. This training program provided detailedinforma on on how staff need to interact with the RQI system.

Standardized PaƟent ProgramThe Standardized Pa ent (SP) Program con nuedto grow as it expanded into new areas for the useof SPs as simulators. With nearly 100 individualsaligned with the SP Program to portray pa ents, the program conducted 441 SP sessions in 2016,ranging from a single SP for a resident educa onsession to 10 SPs for medical student OSCE(Objec ve Structured Clinical Evalua on) sessions. One major new SP course this year was acustomized OSCE session held as part ofthe Annual Mee ng of the PennsylvaniaRheumatology Society. Residents from the state’srheumatology residency programs par cipated inthe session with state-wide faculty reviewing thesessions and providing feedback.Home Care Simula on Creates Challenges for Nursing StudentsA new Penn State College of Nursing Programwas started in 2016 that focused on home care.Because caring for someone in the home isso different than care in an acute se ng, thissimula on was designed to help be er preparesenior nursing students to mee ng client needsin the home se ng. This includes assessingthe home environment, inclusion of poten alfamily or other support persons in the client’scare, cultural influences, resource iden fica on,and providing significant client and familyeduca on.Students interview an SP portraying a homehealth pa ent. To prepare for this simula on,the Clinical Simula on Center created a homeenvironment in one of the simula on rooms, using props such as tables and lamps as wellas indicators of poor health habits such as junkfood and poorly organized medica ons.Hospital-wide Disaster Simula onThe Clinical Simula on Center and the SP Program playedkey roles in a major hospital disaster drill conductedin July 2016. Simula ng a bus crash with hazardousmaterials exposure, the SP Program coordinated make upand moulage for 57 pa ent actors, most of whom werepart of the program’s SP group with the rest from PennState Nursing classes. The Center also supplied severalpediatric simulators for the drill, each with a simulatoroperator to control simulator vital signs and responses.Pa ents were triaged by Emergency Department staffand sent to treatment areas for care. Many of the pa entactors were able to undergo decontamina on, including ahazmat response team scrubbing and showering them inthe medical center’s decontamina on tent.Clockwise from top right, a pediatric simulator is presented to thetriage team. An SP undergoes decontamina on by medical centerHAZMAT responders. SPs played many roles from ambulatory “walkingwounded” to stretcher pa ents during the drill.

Community Service and OutreachThe Clinical Simula on Center con nues todeliver services to the Hershey communityin a variety of ways. The Center hosts formalprograms for several area school systems inaddi on to providing informa onal tours for highschool students looking at health professionscareers. The Center also provides tours andinterac ve programs for many area service andcommunity groups to be er demonstrate howthe health care system works. At le , a Harrisburg High School student works witha simulator under the guidance of Simula on FellowSusana Larbi Wumbee during a recep on and tour hos ngHarrisburg art students whose work was being shown in theCenter.RSTC Coordinates Con nued Support for CPR in Schools ProgramThe RSTC is in its third year of support forthe American Heart Associa on (AHA) CPR inSchools (CiS) program. In 2016, grants totaling 31,470 from the Children’s Miracle Network,I.O. Silver Founda on, and a Community HealthGrant were received and will be dispersed in thecoming year. The goal is to place 44 CiS kits in 22different area schools in 2017. This will bring thetoal number of RSTC suppoorted CiS schools to34.Each kit contains 10 inflatable manikins, kneelingpads, and teaching materials enabling a schoolnurse or teacher to provide hands-only CPRtraining in short, 30-minute sessions.Clinical Simula on Center Supports Medical Center Safety ProgramThe Clinical Simula on Center was an ac vepar cipant in the 2016 Na onal Pa ent SafetyWeek ac vi es on the Hershey Medical Centercampus, the first event of its kind since theincep on of the hospital’s Pa ent SafetyDepartment. An en re pa ent room, completewith audible monitors, headwall, pumps, anda pa ent, was constructed in the main hospitalcafeteria. More than 100 par cipants scru nizedthe simulated room to iden fy more than fi eenpoten al pa ent safety concerns and wereentered in a drawing for hospital cafeteria gicards. One of the areas the Center was reaccredited bythe Society for Simula on in Healthcare in 2016was Systems Integra on. The Na onal Pa entSafety Week ac vi es were just one example ofhow the Center par cipates in events to be eralign its ac vi es with organiza onal goals.Above, Medical Center staff examine the simulated pa entroom in the Rotunda Cafe looking for items that pose safetyhazards as part of a Na onal Pa ent Safety Week event.Library Renova on Creates New Links with Simula on CenterThe Harrell Health Sciences Library underwent an extensive renova on in 2016that created new links with the Clinical Simula on Center. One link was physicalas a new open staircase was installed connec ng the Library to the Center. Both the Library and the Center sit at the crossroads of the Penn State Hersheymissions, connec ng pa ent care, educa on, and research. TheLibrary also has new capabili esincluding 3D prin ng and a newsimple to use video studio that willmake it easier to create blendedlearning programs. The TechnologyInnova on Sandbox features otherhi-tech tools that have simula onuses.
