I earned my doctoratedegree in Communication with aspecialization in InterculturalCommunication from Kent StateUniversity, Kent, Ohio, in 1993.Meet HPSABPresler MaxiusCo-ChairSeniorYears in HP: 4Years in HPSAB: 3Why I joined HPSAB:I serve because, under the supervision ofDr. Sirimangkala, HPSAB is an incredibleopportunity for me to grow as a leader.There is just so much to learn fromsomeone who is as respected as Dr.Sirimangkala. Additionally, I serve because II get to help plan activities (fun andeducational) for the rest of the honorsprogram students, and I also get a say indecisions that affect us students.What are you currently working on orwhat are your research interests?During my sabbatical in fall 2016, Itraveled to Taichung, Taiwan to advancemy Chinese-Mandarin and successfullypassed Band A of the Test of Chinese asa Foreign Language (TOCFL, astandardized test developed for nonnative speakers of Chinese). My currentresearch examines the Chinese identitiesas portrayed in contemporary’s Chinesemedia and through the Chinese’sWriting Systems. While I was firstintroduced to China’s Simplified WritingSystem, I am now devoted to advancingmy Chinese reading comprehension,under Taiwan’s Traditional WritingSystem. Having lived in both China andTaiwan, my research focus is mainly towrite about the Chinese culturalcharacteristics from these two Chinesecultural perspectives. My current goal isalso to pass TOCFL’s Band B and have acommand of up to 1,000 Chinesecharacters.Rhasheda WeirCo-ChairSeniorYears in HP: 2 ½Years in HPSAB: 1 ½Why I joined HPSAB:I wanted to continuing gaining as much as I couldfrom the program, and so when offered thechance to work on the Honors Program AdvisoryBoard, I jumped at it. HPSAB exposes you toleadership roles that you will encounter in thefuture.Nina EscalanteCo-EditorJuniorYears in HP: 2Years in HPSAB: 1Why I joined HPSAB:Being in HP is a great privilege and opportunitybut I felt that my attendance of classes was justnot enough. I needed to get more involved in thisprogram that was giving me so much. HPSAB ismy way to get involved and give back.Could you tell us a little about yourcareer before Barry?Prior to coming to Barry University in1997, I taught at Kent State Universityand University of Arizona.What does your job entail now? AtBarry, I teach both communication andtwo of the HP courses (HUM 199H andHUM 300H) and enjoy traveling with HPstudents to present their researchpapers at national and regional Honorsconferences. In the past, I directed fiveStudy Abroad Programs at Barry (codirected the Thailand Study AbroadProgram in 2006 and 2007 and directedthe Honors Program’s China StudyAbroad in 2010, 2011, and 2012).What are current goals for HPstudents? To encourage more HPstudents to get involved in all aspects ofthe program and to travel to presentpapers at the Honors conferences.Chantel DrysdaleSecretarySeniorYears in HP: 3Years in HPSAB: 2Why I joined HPSAB:I enjoy participating in the events thathappen in HP, but I enjoy the events morewhen I know that I helped put themtogether. My apartmentwas located close to an evacuation zone;and so to ensure my safety, I packed upmy things and left. Thankfully, I did notlose any personal belongings to thestorm; however, I had no power or cellservice for couple of days.got a plane ticket. The ticket was fromPresler Maxius: During Irma, I could notFort Lauderdale, Florida to Albany, Newget in contact with my family in Haiti.York. I live in Bronx, New York, which isMy mom, my sister, and my brother livethree hours from Albany, New York.HP BUDDY SYSTEMThis Fall 2017 semester, and under HPSAB Co-Chair Rhasheda Weir’s initiative, the Honors Program has incorporated aBuddy System in which all HP members will be able to keep in touch and communicate in case of emergencies or help.Below are the names of each of the HPSAB members who will be reaching out and keeping in touch. Her Senior Honors Thesis title was“A culture of communication: A criticalexamination of modern implications ofsocial networking sites.” Cheryl alsoserved on HPSAB (2011 – 2015) as CoChair (2013 – 2015) and Historian and thefirst HP Newsletter Editor (2012).Here iswhat she says:VOLUME 6 – ISSUE 1“Since I graduated from Barry, I havebegun pursuing my PhD in philosophy atthe University of Oklahoma (OU) inNorman, Oklahoma. Norman is arelatively small town in comparison toMiami, so moving here was quite theculture shock. I also had to adjust to myfirst real winter in years, but have lovedgetting to experience all 4 seasons again!In May I completed the Master’s degreeportion of my program, so I now haveapproximately 3-4 years left until I havemy PhD. I plan to specialize in appliedethics and the philosophy of art, both ofwhich I learned to love thanks to formerHP faculty member Dr. Ruth Tallman. Inthe summer of 2016 I had the privilegeof attending the Sherwin B. NulandSummer Institute in Bioethics at YaleUniversity, where I received the PollardPrize for Outstanding Graduate StudentResearch for my research on universityresponses to student suicide attempts.Over this past summer I have been busydoing research on potential topics for mydissertation. I hope to write onsomething involving mental health andthe importance of art in treating mentalillness. I was also recently published in achapter of the book Hamilton andPhilosophy: Revolutionary Thinking!Dianna entered the Honors Program in2010 and graduated with a Bachelor ofArts in English from Barry University inMay 2014. Her Senior Honors Thesis titlewas “Selling Social Consciousness: TheIrony and Implications of MassMarketing Young Adult DystopianFiction.” Dianna also served on HPSAB(as Secretary in 2011 and asHPSAB Chair from 2012–2014). Here iswhat she says:“After graduating with my masters inEnglish from Eastern Illinois University, Imoved back to home to the place whereI spent most of my childhood: Phoenix.I’ve been out in Arizona for about a year4Outside of research I serve as myuniversity's Minorities and Philosophychapter representative, and I am a cocoach of our Ethics Bowl Team. I've alsoenjoyed my time making new friends andexploring life in the Midwest!The friendships I formed while in theHonors Program have truly becomelifelong friendships!”Two former HPSAB members, now lifelongfriends: Cheryl Frazier and AlekzanderSayers. Cheryl’s own caption of the abovephoto “Alek and I got to have a mini-HPSABreunion in July 2016 while I was inConnecticut for the program at Yale. I droveup one weekend to Maine to visit him!”now and loving reconnecting withchildhood friends, spending quality timewith my sister, and, of course, soaking upall the sun I can get!One of my best friends from Barry hasactually just moved out as well, so I amhelping her get adjusted (proof that theconnections made at Barry can last alifetime!).I teach English composition at MesaCommunity College and will be startingtraining to adjunct for Southern NewHampshire University in their onlineadult continuing education program.

I regularlychannel my favorite professors when Istruggle in the classroom (like spellingwords wrong on the white board), andfind myself reflecting back on just howwonderful they were often.In my spare time, I travel, hike, rockclimb, attend concerts, cosplay, and likeany true millennial watch way too muchNetflix and Hulu.”Raul Ballester and his twin boysRaul Ballester entered the HonorsProgram in Fall 2009 and graduatedwith a Bachelor of Science in Financefrom Barry University in May 2011. HisSenior Honors Thesis title was “TheLaw of Diminishing Return: AnEmpirical Study of China’s EconomicGrowth.” Here is what he says:5“My personal and professional life areadvancing faster than ever! Personally,my two boys (twins – Brian and Adam),recently turned 2 this August – without adoubt they are my greatestaccomplishment. Professionally – I amnow in the Corporate Finance Auditdepartment. This role has me travellingall over the world for extended periodsof time; while providing exposure tosome of our top projects in Africa, Asia,and Australia. My day to day are a bithectic, but with proper planning,anything is manageable, from daycareactivities and sports for my boys, to workmeetings and projects. We recently builtand moved into our new home.Diane and her roommates from BarryHP Faculty: Where Are They Now?Dr. RuthTallman taughtPHI 191H (JudeoChristian Doctrine)for the HonorsProgram fromAugust 2013 untilMay 2017. HPstudents oftenindicated that PHI 191H was one of thebest classes they took in the program.Below are some sentiments we receivedfrom HP students upon hearing thenews that Dr. Tallman took a teachingposition at the University of Wisconsin –Whitewater. Alayna Gallagher: “I really enjoyed Dr.Tallman’s PHI 191H class.” Chantel Drysdale: “Dr. Tallmanalways made going to her class worth it.I had a great opportunity to be in two ofher classes: PHI 191H and BIO-MedicalEthics. I always learned something newin each class and had many compellingdiscussions with her and other students.She definitely made my experience atBarry University better. Thank you, Dr.Tallman. You are absolutely missed atBarry U.” Nina Escalante: “Dr. Tallman was myfavorite professor! I took two philosophyclasses with her, and I was supposed totake a third. Who will I take that classwith now?” Abigail Solorzano: “No otherprofessor has challenged me (in a goodway) as Dr. Tallman. She made everyclass not only enjoyable but a reallearning experience.”Here is what Dr. Tallman wrote tous:“As for my news, I’m teachingphilosophy at the University ofWisconsin-Whitewater. I’ll beheading up (we’re currently in theprocess of creating it) a newapplied ethics track inside thephilosophy major here. We’veenjoyed an absolutely gorgeoussummer and fall. It’s beenawesome watching the leaveschange color! I’m living in a smalltown where I can walk to thefarmer’s market on Saturdaymornings - so much great localproduce! The apple cider upthere is to die for! I’m not at allexcited about my first winter in 7years, though! I miss you all somuch and hope everyone is doingwell!Best, Ruth
