When necessary we begin our liturgy with the tolling of our prayer gong. We ring the bellonce for each child of God taken from this world by the latest gun violence. We pray thatwe will, very soon, never have to ring our gong again.PresiderPeopleBlessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever.Amen.Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you nosecrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of yourHoly Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holyName; through Christ our Lord. Amen.PresiderPeoplePresiderThe Lord be with you.And also with you.Let us pray.COLLECT OF THE DAYO Lord, make us have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for younever fail to help and govern those whom you have set upon the surefoundation of your loving-kindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who livesand reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Word of GodTHE LESSONPlease sit.1 Kings 19:1-4Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all theprophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "Somay the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life like the life ofone of them by this time tomorrow." Then he was afraid; he got up and fled forhis life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah; he left his servantthere. But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat downunder a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: "It is enough; now, OLord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors."ReaderPeople4The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 43Said in unison.1 Give judgment for me, O God,and defend my cause against an ungodly people; *deliver me from the deceitful and the wicked.2 For you are the God of my strength;why have you put me from you? *and why do I go so heavily while the enemy oppresses me?3 Send out your light and your truth, that they may lead me, *and bring me to your holy hilland to your dwelling;4 That I may go to the altar of God,to the God of my joy and gladness; *and on the harp I will give thanks to you, O God my God.5 Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul? *and why are you so disquieted within me?6 Put your trust in God; *for I will yet give thanks to him,who is the help of my countenance, and my God.THE EPISTLE:GALATIANS 3:23-29Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law untilfaith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christcame, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we areno longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children ofGod through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothedyourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slaveor free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs accordingto the promise.ReaderPeopleThe Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.5

Sung by all, standingHYMNAL 411Words: James MontgomeryMusic: Aaron Williams & Lowell MasonTHE HOLY GOSPELPeoplePlease remain standingLUKE 8:26-39The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.Glory to you, Lord Christ.Jesus and his disciples arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which isopposite Galilee. As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demonsmet him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a housebut in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted atthe top of his voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most HighGod? I beg you, do not torment me" -- for Jesus had commanded the uncleanspirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was keptunder guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bondsand be driven by the demon into the wilds.) Jesus then asked him, "What is yourname?" He said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. They begged himnot to order them to go back into the abyss.6

Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demonsbegged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. Then thedemons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed downthe steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in thecity and in the country. Then people came out to see what had happened, andwhen they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gonesitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed bydemons had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of theGerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So hegot into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gonebegged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, "Return toyour home, and declare how much God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.PeopleThe Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people may be seated.SERMONTHE REV. MARK SPAULDING7

NICENE CREEDSaid together, standing. We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvationhe came down from heaven:by the power of the Holy Spirithe became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son She is worshiped and glorified. She has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.8

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLEStanding, kneeling or sitting, the people pray responsivelyFor this almost summer moment in our beautiful part of the world. We feel thesun warming us, staying with us each day, longer and longer. For the dryinggolden hills, the popsicles dripping all over the place, for pride flags flyingagainst the bright blue sky.We thank you, God.For this Ohlone land we live on and the resources we share, we are grateful. Wedesire to be good relatives; to the water, the green, growing things, the animalsand other humans.Show us how to use our power to care for all.Injustice seems to flourish in this world, from the wars and gun violence to theinstitutions and structures that cause harm to people every day. God, give usstrength and creativity to make something new flourish instead.Help us be the love that moves powerfully against forces of stagnation, hateand fear.In our community and in our neighborhood, we know everyone has differentfeelings, different burdens, different experiences. All our worst days and bestdays are happening simultaneously.Give us the tenderness to know how to care for each other today. For those who have died, we hold them in our hearts with the big light of thissummer sun knowing they are held in the endless light of your love.Thank you God, for shining bright on the faces of our loved ones. The beginning of summer holds such possibility. May we hold that same senseof possibility for ourselves now. May we grow this summer,In our care for each other and the world and in our awareness of God’s deeplove for us. Amen.9

THE CONFESSIONMost merciful God,we confess that we have sinned against youin thought, word, and deed,by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart;we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us;that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,to the glory of your Name. THE GREAT THANKSGIVINGThe people remain standing. The Presider saysPeoplePresiderPeoplePresiderPeopleThe Lord be with you.And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks toyou, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame deathand the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way ofeverlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels andwith all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim theglory of your Name:Presider and PeopleHoly, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest. The people remain standing, kneel or sit. Then the Presider continuesHoly and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in yourmercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our humannature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father ofall. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience toyour will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christtook bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to hisdisciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do thisfor the remembrance of me.”11

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave itto them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever youdrink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice ofpraise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, weoffer you these gifts.Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood ofyour Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify usalso that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into thejoy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ.
