Research Grants2003The Israeli Anti-Drugs Authority – Research Grant, one year ( 2800).2008UIA Federation Canada, fund raising for IATF conference at Eilat Campus ( 4600).2012-13 Israel Ministry of Tourism. Research Grant, one year ( 6400). Synopsis of ResearchMy research interests span two main areas. The first includes the socio-cultural aspects oftourism as an industry and as a social practice; the second examines philosophical andmethodological questions relating to the development and establishment of Tourism Studies asan academic field. My theoretical inclination to create a structured conceptualization of therealities I examine is what unites these two areas of interest, in addition to the topic of tourism, which is related to my academic training and institutional affiliation. The main hypothesis of my first line of research is that tourism is a unique window throughwhich the characteristics of society and of the participating elements can be understood. Todate, I have examined specific practices such as drug use in the context of tourism (Belhassen,2004; Belhassen, Santos & Uriely, 2007, Belhassen & Uriely, 2008) and evangelicalpilgrimages to Israel (e.g., Belhassen, Caton & Stewart, 2008; Belhassen, 2009) in an attemptto inductively understand the social and cultural factors creating the conditions leading to theirformation, as well as their extensive social implications. I have also employed critical discourseanalysis as a methodological lens in my exploration of urban tours to Chinatown Chicago(Santos, Belhassen & Caton, 2007), and the potential of gastronomic tourism in the IsraeliNegev (Hillel, Belhassen & Shani, 2013). More recently, I was involved in research projectrelated to human resource in the hospitality industry. The data collected in Eilat – a remote andisolated resort town at the southernmost tip of Israel – reveals extensive use of cigarettes, alcohol and cannabis among workers in the hospitality industry, which is the major employer inthe town (Belhassen, 2012). This research also examines workers' substance use habits in lightof their attitude toward their job and to their temporary staying in the city (Belhassen & Shani,2012; 2013).My second line of research focuses on the epistemology of tourism research as a relativelyyoung field of studies. My work in this field has focused on an attempt to map academicknowledge in tourism research and its conceptual roots (Belhassen & Caton, 2009, Belhassen9

& Caton, 2011; Belhassen, 2012). I have also attempted to provide current and futuregenerations of researchers with a reflective perspective on the theoretical, practical, and ethicalgoals of tourism research and pedagogy (Belhassen, 2007; Shani, Belhassen & Soskolne,2012).10
