Student RecapJordan RossidisI started the FLO program almost 5 years agoand I can say I would not be the man I am todaywithout the help of Baptist Care and towonderful teachers at the CLC. I had a taste ofregular high school learning and it was not mycup of tea. I was having trouble making it to classon time or even showing up at all. I eventuallystopped going all together, just staying at homedoing nothing. Eventually my dad brought me toa FLO campus, at first I thought I didn’t evenneed help, thinking that I could just powerthrough it and that it would mean I was weak if Iwent into FLO. How very wrong I was. I foundFLO to be the perfect place to finish myschooling and gain my SACE. I was motivated toleave the house again. Whilst they were yournormal classes, they were smaller in comparisonto a high school. I was able to get help easily if Iwas stuck and I developed a better bond with myteachers. The case managers were able to help me out soso very much, although I got a bit unlucky as Ihad three different case managers throughoutmy time at FLO each helped me in differentways.Alfred was my first and he helped me getintroduced to FLO and all its possible ways tohelp me, then there was Andrew “Barky”, hebrought me out of my shell and helped me to bemore chipper and active. Finally, there wasHannah, who was there for me when I was goingthrough some of my roughest times emotionally. There were other case managers and staff thatweren’t assigned to me but deserve somehonourable mentions. Tracey, who was therefrom the beginning and was always someone Icould look to for guidance and a good laugh.Shanna was there to help me kick-start my jobhunt and find some nice places to work. Cat,always had time to stop and chat if you had anyproblems being either emotional or just someoneto vent to. There are a whole host of others Icould talk about like Liam and his silly little popculture quizzes. A different Andrew who I wouldchat about the latest big video games or Netflixshow, or Fleur, who I constantly bantered with.Oh and the adventures and opportunities, damn.Through Duke of Ed I got to kayak and camp theMurray, hike through the beautiful landscapes ofTasmania for 8 days, and for the first time seesnow and have a snow fight. With all these hikesand camps, I made some bonds with friends evenstronger. I learnt the skills of a barista (and makea damn good coffee now), first aid, self-defenceand the appropriate qualifications to work behinda bar. Now, I am getting my Business CertificateIII at TAFE, and this will give me the last creditsneeded to get my SACE certificate by the end ofthis year.I met so many people over my time in FLO that Iwould now consider friends and so many I see asfamily. That is one of the best parts of FLO in myopinion, whilst in a mainstream high school youmake friends with the other students andteachers, in the CLC and FLO you make family.Pg. 4

Short Course: Barista / HygieneThis term some our young people learned the fineart of making the perfect cup of freshly brewedcoffee during the Barista/Hygiene short course. The training was held over two days at the CLCand students learned everything from a shortblack to a cappuccino, a flat white to a macchiatoand all of the rest the subtle combinations thatcoffee beans, milk and water can create! There was lots of tasting going on this day but withmany staff members being avid lovers of coffee, there were few complaints! These skills can now be utilised for students toparticipate the CLC Bean Buggy Programthroughout the year.Cert II Education SkillsDevelopment (ESD)Students have been working well in improving theirliteracy and numeracy skills through the Certificate IIin Education Skills Development.Students are able to work at their own pace and buildtheir skills through completing units including learningonline, how to communicate effectively, how tooperate a computer, reading and writing a range textsand basic mathematical principles.Discussions around topical issues also take placeduring learning sessions giving students an opportunityto present their own opinions and consider otherpeoples’. Some discussions have centred aroundbrain development in teenagers, impulse control andconsequences, bullying and multiple intelligences.Looking forward to continuing the great work intoterm 2!Pg. 7
