General InformationCourse DescriptionThis advanced course is designed to providethe clinician and advanced sonographerwith an update on transthoracic, stress,and transesophageal echocardiographyas well as cardiac CT and MRI. It isnot a “how-to” course, but instead willconcentrate on the application of thesemodalities to clinical decision making.The program consists primarily of clinicalcases which illustrate the problemscardiovascular specialists commonlyencounter. Multiple choice questionsaddressing the clinical utility andlimitations of echocardiography followeach case. In addition, faculty presents“rapid fire” and “unknown” cases. Theaudience is also encouraged to bringunknown cases which will be shownduring the sessions.Special breakout sessions are devotedto the interpretation of Dopplerhemodynamics, diastolic function, stressechocardiography, congenital heartdisease, interventional and perioperativeechocardiography.Attendance at this Mayo course doesnot indicate nor guarantee competenceor proficiency in the performance of anyprocedures which may be discussed ortaught in this course.Intended AudienceThis course is intended for physiciansand sonographers with an advancedbackground in echocardiography.CreditMayo Clinic College of Medicine is accreditedby the Accreditation Council for ContinuingMedical Education to provide continuingmedical education for physicians.Mayo Clinic College of Medicinedesignates this live activity for a maximumof 24.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits .Physicians should claim only the creditcommensurate with the extent of theirparticipation in the activity.This course is designed to encouragemaximum audience participation andinteraction with the faculty.Other Health Care ProfessionalsA certificate of attendance will be providedto other health care professionals forrequesting credits in accordance with statenursing boards, specialty societies, or otherprofessional associations.Course Learning ObjectivesGrants and ExhibitsUpon conclusion of this program,participants should be able to: Optimize selection of imaging modalitiesto aid in clinical decision making forevaluation and management of patientswith valvular heart disease; Identify normal and abnormal featuresof patients with prosthetic valves; Identify the pitfalls of interpretationwith exercise and dobutamine stressechocardiography; Apply Doppler hemodynamics intoclinical decision-making in patientswith heart failure symptoms with bothnormal and abnormal systolic function; Describe a systematic approach toechocardiography for patients withcomplex congenital heart disease; Recite the utility of echocardiography inpatients with acute ischemic syndromesand other acute illnesses requiringadmission to the intensive care unit; and Identify common indications andpotential pitfalls for intraoperativetransesophageal echocardiography.At the time of this printing, a completelisting of commercial supporters (financialor in-kind) was not available.
