6THE WEST KEY NUMBER SYSTEMTHE WEST KEY NUMBER SYSTEMOne of the unique features of West is the West KeyNumber System. For more than 100 years, the West KeyNumber System (sometimes referred to as “The Index toAmerican Law”) has made legal research easier and fasterby offering researchers a systematic way to search forcases that contain a specific point of law. After carefully reading and analyzing a judicial opinion,West’s attorney-editors assign each point of law in theopinion to one or more of the 400-plus topics shown onthe following pages. To help you pinpoint your research, each topic is furtherdivided into subtopics, each of which is assigned a specifickey number. At present, there are more than 100,000individual key numbers—West’s way of making sure yourresearch is always as precise and accurate as possible.
