CHAPTER 1GENERAL1.1 Purpose - The purpose of this manual is to establish uniform procedures and practicesfor quality control and quality assurance sampling and testing of asphalt mixtures. This manual provides instructions and procedures for Contractor and MDOTpersonnel for the design, control and acceptance of asphalt mixtures under MDOT’sQuality Management Program (QMP) as required by the specifications. Samplingprocedures, sampling frequencies, and testing to be performed by the Contractor forthe quality control of asphalt mixtures at the asphalt plant and by MDOT for thequality assurance and acceptability of these mixtures are detailed. When necessaryfor clarification, examples are provided. For ready reference, the specificatio ns,standard operating procedures, and example forms for documentation of test resultsare provided in appendices to this manual.1.2 TerminologyAASHTO - American Association of State Highway and Transportation OfficialsASTM - American Society of Testing MaterialsBRCF - Bulk Specific Gravity (Gmb) Reheat Calibration FactorCAT-I - Certified Asphalt Technician-Level I. Contractor or MDOT personnel whohave successfully completed the MDOT Asphalt Technician Certification Programfor Level I certification. This certification level is required for performance ofsampling and testing of asphalt mixtures and component materials.CAT-II - Certified Asphalt Technician-Level II. Contractor or MDOT personnelwho have successfully completed the MDOT Asphalt Technician Certificatio nProgram for Level I and Level II. This certification level is required for Contractorpersonnel who interpret asphalt test results and make necessary plant adjustmentssuch that the asphalt mixture produced conforms to the job mix formula.CMDT - Certified Mixture Design Technician. Contractor or MDOT personnel whohave successfully completed the MDOT Asphalt Technician Certification Programfor the design of asphalt mixtures.
