E-News and UpdatesJune 15th, 2017CHERI BRYANT HAMILTON, DISTRICT 5 COUNCILWOMANMessage from Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton - Friday, June 2nd 2017I am happy to be with you all to observe National Gun ViolenceAwareness Day. With the number of shootings and homicides rising inour city on almost a daily and nightly basis in some neighborhoods - Ithink that we can all agree that what is happening is NOT normal, is NOTright, is NOT acceptable, and it NOT getting any better. Our community isin a crisis - let’s face it.But we’re here this morning to be part of the solution, because we all canand must do everything we can to raise awareness and to prevent gunviolence. It’s too early for young people to pick up a gun to resolve a conflict - when they could pick up their fist (like Alidid) and learn to box at the gym at 25th & Main. Or they could learn anger management and conflict resolutionskills at Peace Education, for example. Or develop musical talents at AMPED, or get a job with Project ONE - orget a mentor with Big Brother, Big Sister - there are so many resources.Violence - especially gun violence, is truly a community health problem how many of us experience increased stress on a daily basis wondering if astray bullet might catch us or a loved one in our neighborhoods & feel ourhearts pound when the police or EMS sirens race past out houses at allhours of the night?Too many families have been affected forever by tragic gun violence. Many have been innocent victims - but far too many haven’t.So I ask you - if your son, your brother, or your boyfriend have a gun - whydo they have it? Do you even know they have it? And if they say it’s forprotection - then what are they doing out there - & who are theyassociating with that they feel they need a gun to be protected from?Ask yourself - are they using or selling drugs? Or hanging with folks thatdo? Are they in a gang - or hanging with folks that are? If so, you can’t turna blind eye and hope the violence will not reach your door In conclusion - if you have a gun and have young people who live or visit your home - LOCK IT UP! Lets not sayit’s not my problem & turn a blind eye - it’s time for all hands on deck!7
