A number of Emory University'sprofessional schools ranked amongthe best in the nation, according toU.S. News & World Report. Vinod Thourani, MD, received the W.Proctor Harvey, MD, Young TeacherAward at the 2013 AmericanCollege of Cardiology's (ACC)annual meeting. Emory is one of 17 collaboratingcenters from 10 countriesparticipating in an internationalconsortium project aimed at earlierdetection and prevention of heartfailure. The European Commissionawarded a grant of almost 16million to the Heart OMics in AGEing(HOMAGE) project, with a goal ofbetter identifying more specificbiomarkers for heart failure. Mohammed K. Ali, MBChB, MSc,MBA, assistant professor in theHubert Department of Global Healthand Department of Epidemiology atEmory's Rollins School of PublicHealth was awarded the Velji Awardfor Teaching Excellence in GlobalHealth by the Consortium ofUniversities for Global Health. Emory Johns Creek Hospital was named tothe Georgia Hospital Association's (GHA)Chairman's Circle for patient safety. Paul J. Scheinberg, MD, was named chiefmedical officer of Saint Joseph's Hospital.Scheinberg is a founding partner ofAtlanta Pulmonary Group, and has beenactively engaged in the practice ofpulmonology and critical care medicine atSaint Joseph's Hospital since 1979. Fadlo R. Emory University Hospital (EUH) joinsan elite group of only 20 nationalproviders focused on complexstroke care with its ComprehensiveStroke Center Certification from TheJoint Commission and the AmericanHeart Association/American StrokeAssociation. The Georgia Institute of Technologyand Emory University selected RaviV. Bellamkonda, PhD, a prominentbiomedical scientist and engineer,to chair their joint department ofbiomedical engineering. Judith Wold, PhD, RN, was inductedinto the National League for Nursing(NLN) Academy of NursingEducation Fellowship. The Yerkes National PrimateResearch Center, Emory University,has received a five-year, 9.5million grant from the NationalInstitute of Mental Health (NIMH) toestablish a Silvio O. The Georgia Research Alliance(GRA) has named Walter J. Curran,Jr., MD, executive director of theWinship Cancer Institute of EmoryUniversity, a Georgia ResearchAlliance Eminent Scholar and Chairin Cancer Research. Jeffrey P. Koplan, MD, MPH, vicepresident for global health,received a 2013 People's Republicof China Friendship Award. TheFriendship Award is China’s highestaward for foreign experts who havemade outstanding contributions tothe country's economic and socialprogress. Paige Tolbert, PhD, was appointedRollins Professor of EnvironmentalHealth at the Rollins School of PublicHealth. The professorship was madepossible through the generoussupport of the Rollins Family, whichled to the establishment of the O.Wayne and Grace Crum RollinsEndowment Fund. For 20 years,Tolbert has served as a member ofthe Rollins School of Public Healthfaculty. The Helene Fuld Health Trust hasdonated 6.5 million to establish aninnovative palliative care fellowshipprogram at Emory University's NellHodgson Woodruff School of Nursingand the Emory Palliative CareCenter. David S. Stephens, MD, vicepresident for research, wasappointed chair of the Departmentof Medicine in Emory UniversitySchool of Medicine, and chief ofmedicine, Emory Healthcare.Stephens has served as vicepresident for research in the WHSCsince 2008. He also is the StephenW. Helen Mayberg, MD, was named aFellow of the American Associationfor the Advancement of Science(AAAS). Mayberg is professor ofpsychiatry, neurology and radiologyand the Dorothy C. Fuqua Chair inPsychiatric Imaging andTherapeutics in the School ofMedicine. Mahlon R. DeLong, MD, professor ofneurology at Emory UniversitySchool of Medicine, is one of sixrecipients of the 2014 BreakthroughPrize in Life Sciences. George Henry Grant, MDiv, PhD,was named executive director ofthe Emory Center for PastoralServices. His work encompasses thespiritual health of patients, familiesand the staff of Emory Healthcare,at all of its hospitals and clinics.Since 2007, Grant has served as thedirector of research and innovationat the Emory Center for PastoralServices. Professor Emeritus James Eckman,founder and medical director of theGeorgia Sickle Cell Center at GradyMemorial Hospital who retired fromEmory Hematology and MedicalOncology in September 2013, washonored with a Sickle Cell ScientificSymposium celebrating his career.The symposium attracted more than100 sickle cell experts, colleagues,and friends, and includedpresentations on sickle cellcomplications, treatments,research, and clinical trials.WHSC Selected Accomplishments 2013-2014
