13-4BUSWAY, BUYLOG SECTION 13—GeneralABB is a world leader in busway manufacturing and design, providing a wide range of busway types available from 30 to5000 amperes and up to 600 Volts ac.ABB busway has many advantages over wire and conduit:- Lower total installed cost. Busway material costs areoften equal or less than wire and conduit, and contractorscan install busway in a fraction of the time.- Lower life cycle cost. Busway components can be added, deleted, or relocated one month or even many years afterthe initial installation, saving time and money.- Predictable characteristics. Busway systems conform tocommon standards. Consultants can use readilypublished data on busway short-circuit ratings, voltagedrop, weights and dimensions in the planning stage of anelectrical project.- Can save considerable space in tight electrical closetsand existing buildings.Busway product lines- Spectra Series 225-6000 amperes- Spectra Series LowAmp 225-800 amperes- DH 100 amperes- LW (Replacement parts only)- LTG (Replacement parts only)- Armor-Clad (Replacement parts only)- FVA/FVK (Replacement parts only)- LVD/LVDP (Replacement parts only)- DNSP (Call ABB—Sales Office- for information.)Usage considerationsBusway is not designed for use in highly corrosiveatmospheres such as battery rooms or in classifiedhazardous locations where it could be subject to mechanicaldamage. Busway is not designed to be embedded in theground or in concrete and should be used only for exposedwork. However, most inspection authorities consider thespace above ceiling to be accessible, provided the ceilingpanels are readily removable.Ambient temperatureABB busway is rated based on a 55 hot spot temperature riseover a maximum ambient of 40 C. The busway should bederated for high ambient temperatures.Thermal expansionGive consideration to the effects of thermal expansion onbusway runs. Compensation for thermal expansion is inherentin DH busway. For other busway types, expansion fittings maybe necessary for long straight runs of 150 feet or more, particularly if the busway is not free to move at the ends ofthe run. The use of an expansion fitting is recommendedwhen the busway run crosses a building expansion joint.StandardsThere are published standards for all types of low-voltagebusway. ABB busway conforms to the latest revision of NEMAStandard BU 1, UL standard 857 Federal Specification W-B811b, CSA. ABB busway bears the UL label except whereotherwise noted.High-frequency applicationsABB busway can be used at higher than 60-cycle frequency, but in most cases it is necessary to derate the busway. Inmost busway, the voltage drop increases at higherfrequencies.Short-circuit ratingsAll busway with a UL label must be marked with a UL listedshortcircuit rating. UL short-circuit ratings apply to “all”busway and associated fittings such as straight lengths, elbows, tees, tap boxes, power takeoffs, and plugs which arenecessary for a busway installation. Ratings without a groundbar are established by tests which require the housing andhousing joints to provide a satisfactory ground return. The short-circuit rating of fittings with protective deviceswhich are part of the busway, such as power takeoffs andreducers, is equal to the lower of the short-circuit rating ofthe protective device or the busway with which the fitting isused. For example, a fusible power takeoff rated with200,000 amperes with Class J fuses when installed on abusway rated 65,000 amperes would have a rating of 65,000amperes.The short-circuit rating of a busway plug is equal to the shortcircuit rating of the fuse or circuit breaker used in the plug.Busway publications:Spectra series busway vs. Wire and conduitGEA-12111Spectra series buswayGET-7005ESpectra series busway installation instructionsDEH-40087CSpectra series LowAmp buswayGET-8063Spectra series LowAmp busway installation instructionsGEH-6436Spectra series LowAmp busway vs. Majorcompetitive manufacturersDEC-023Spectra series LowAmp busway fact sheetDET-103ABB type DH plug-in or Feeder buswayGET-9001AABB type DH busway installation instructionsGEH-6437Spectra series busway—Short time heating limitsGES-9508Spectra series busway, 600-5000 amp bus bar sizingGEZ-7726Spectra series busway vs. Major competitor manufacturersGEZ-7736Labor estimating manual (busway)GEZ-7737Insulation IntegrityDE-171Spectra series outdoor buswayInstallation videoInstallation DVDDEV-051ADEV-066Busway tool kitDEU-060

BUSWAY, BUYLOG SECTION 1313-6—Plug short-circuit ratingsFusible switch busway plugsFusible switches in all busway fittings (plugs, power takeoffs, and reducers) have the following short-circuit ratings whenused with the fuses shown. To qualify for R fuse rating, switches must have R fuse clips which reject other type fuses. The interrupting rating of the fuse must equal or exceed theshort-circuit rating of the switch. It is lower than the shortcircuit rating of the switch, then the combination has therating of the g30 to120030 to120030 to120030 to120030 to120030 to1200FuseULClassHK5K1JRLDescriptionInterrupting RatingAmperes rms Symmetrical240 and 480 VoltsOne imitingCurrentLimitingCurrentLimitingSpectra RMS circuit breaker IC ratings (rms sym. kA)10,00010,000200,000200,000200,000Frame KHSKLSKP240 V186510020065100200651002006510020065100200480 V1425651002565100356510035651005065100600 V14182525182525256565256565254265Circuit breaker busway essCurrentLimitingHighInterruptingTri-Break InterruptingSpectra 15-100125-400300-600600-800Spectra RMS Circuit Breakers UL listed for Spectra series busway only.UL listed interrupting ratings in thousand amperes rms symmetrical ac volts.3Discontinued; replaced by Spectra Frame Type.12Spectra Frame2 IC RatingsOld Frame IC Ratings240 V480 V600 V240 V480 V600 –30304242200200200200

13-7BUSWAY, BUYLOG SECTION 13—Spectra series buswayApplicationUL fire-stop systemUL listed three-hour fire-stop barrier is now available for usewith ABB Busway systems. The system is listed in the UL FireResistance Directory under section 3L73—ThroughPenetration Fire-Stop Systems. In addition to the three-hourtest, the system has met the criteria of ASTM E814 (UL1479).The contractor installs a mineral wool batt (4 PCF Nominal) asshown below, on-site during the busway installation process. For riser applications, the system is used in combination witha standard ABB spring hanger and floor flange. For horizontalapplications, the system is used in combination with two wallflanges (one per side).Cubic inches required per floor and 40005000SEALANT 100 66SEALANT 100 6–132ABB BuswayFloor/WallFlange½" Thick MinimumSealant 100Top of Floor/Curbor WallFloorConcrete 4 ½"Thick MinimumMineral Wool3" Depth MinimumNote: The busway cover plate and sealant is required on bothsides for wall installation.DescriptionSealant 100Container19 cu. in.-TubeProduct NumberSBFB100You have two options for ordering the fire-stop material:1. With initial busway purchase. Use the product numberslisted above and the fire-stop material will be shipped in aspecially marked box directly to the job site with thebusway.2. T hrough empower or an authorized ABB SiliconesDistributor. Recommended for fill-in (if needed) after initialpurchase. This information is provided as a guideline for typical firestop systems. If you have an annulus (or opening) greaterthan 1” beyond the busway enclosure, you will need todetermine the proper amount of fire-stop material based onthe illustration on this page. Quantities are based onapplication of recommended amount of material; more maybe required if over-application occurs.
