EMERGENCY WATER SUPPLYTREATING POTENTIALLY CONTAMINATED WATER IN AN EMERGENCYTreat only enough water to meetyour needs for 48 hours at a time.Purification TabletsThe water can also be treated withwater purification tablets which canbe purchased at most outdoors orsporting goods stores. Follow thedirections for use on the package. There is an increased chance ofrecontamination if the treated watersits for more than 48 hours. Refrigerationwill also help avoid recontamination.Boiling WaterDuring an emergency, such as a major earthquake, a “boil water notice” may be issued untilwater can be verified that it is not contaminated and is safe to drink. During a “boil water notice,”any water used for drinking or food preparation should be boiled at a full rolling boil for at leastone full minute. A full rolling boil is a vigorous boil that can not be stopped by stirring the water. Ifthe water is dirty looking and/or has particulate matter in it, filter the water through a coffee filter, paper towels, or clean cloth before boiling.NOTE: Most home water filters are meant for water that is already microbiologically safe. Using these filtersduring a “boil water notice” will not guarantee the safety of the water. Replace any filter cartridges after theboil water notice has been lifted to ensure your filter is not contaminated.TREATING WATER WITH BLEACHIf the emergency has left you with no way to boil water, or if you have limited fuel and do not want to use itfor boiling water, you may treat the water with liquid household laundry bleach (see warning below) to killmicroorganisms such as bacteria and viruses.1. See the warning below aboutthe types of bleach NOT touse, which contain additionalchemicals that are poisonous.2. Add bleach in the amountslisted in the graphic to the rightfor a 1 gallon container or a 5gallon container (measurementsper CDC.gov).3. If the water is cloudy, dirty, murky, colored or very cold, add double the amount ofbleach listed in the graphic tothe right. It is best to attempt tofilter it first through coffee filters.4. Thoroughly mix by stirring orshaking the container.5. Let the water stand for 30minutes before using. A slightchlorine odor should benoticeable in the water. If not,add another dosage of bleachand allow the water to standanother 15 minutes before using.5 GALS. WATERADD BLEACH1 GAL.
