Chancellor’s Reportby Lynda Goldstein, Ph.D.During my stint as Interim Chancellor, I’ve hadthe opportunity to work with enthusiastic and deeplydedicated alumni, donors, Advisory Board members, community and business leaders, and fellow collegeadministrators. I’ve been incredibly impressed withhow big an impact we all have together in northeastern Pennsylvania. How does the campus contribute? In addition toproviding a top-notch undergraduate education at agateway campus to a Big Ten research university, wedrive economic development. According to theeconomic impact study (by Tripp Umbach andAssociates, Inc.) released in November 2004, thecampus contributesNearly 49.3 million directly to the state’seconomy; 25.5 million directly to the economy ofLuzerne County;Nearly 330 million in total business volumeimpact in Bradford, Luzerne, Lycoming,Sullivan, Tioga and Wyoming Counties;More than 3.4 million in tax revenue for theCommonwealth; andMore than 2.5 million annually in localcharitable donations and volunteer services. We’ve successfully competed for individual andpartnership grant support, including:Over 156,800 in support of teaching andresearch for 12 faculty members;Over 390,000 to underwrite learning supportand career placement for over 700 students;Over 75,000 in workforce developmentWednet and NEPIRC grant funds workingwith over 14 area companies; andA 400,000 Incumbent Worker Grant inpartnership with NEPIRC, PennTAP, PennState Worthington-Scranton and Penn StateHazleton, and the Plastics Center at PennCollege for the plastics industry cluster inthe region. And we serve over 9,000 Penn State alumniwho live, work, and play in Bradford, Luzerne,Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Wyoming Counties. That’s nearly 5% of all Penn State grads currentlyliving in Pennsylvania. The impact of Penn State—through campusprograms and services and university alumni—ishuge.
