CommencementSPRING SEMESTER 2020COLLEGE OF ARTS AND ARCHITECTUREMay 9, 2020

National AnthemAlma MaterO say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming;Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight,O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in airGave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.O say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave! For the glory of old State,For her founders, strong and great,For the future that we wait,Raise the song, raise the song,by Francis Scott Keyby Fred Lewis PatteeSing our love and loyalty,Sing our hopes that, bright and free,Rest, O Mother dear, with thee. All with thee, all with thee. When we stood at childhood’s gate,Shapeless in the hands of fate,Thou didst mold us, dear old State,Dear old State, dear old State.May no act of ours bring shameTo one heart that loves thy name,May our lives but swell thy fame,Dear old State, dear old State!

CommencementSPRI NG SEMESTER 2020COLLEGE OF ARTS AND ARCHITECTURESaturday, May 9, 2020Message from B. Stephen Carpenter IIDean of the College of Arts and ArchitectureCongratulations, graduates. In the face of incredible uncertainty andunparalleled challenges in most aspects of your lives, your perseveranceand determination have been shining markers of resilience thissemester. Today may not be the type of celebration you had planned, but your accomplishments shine just as bright, and you will alwayslook back on what you have achieved with pride and satisfaction.Over the past seven weeks, you have demonstrated—as students in the arts anddesign always do—that creativity, innovation, and a sense of what is possibleare central to who you are. You adjusted to remote learning for classes andprojects that were not initially conceived to take place in a virtual setting. Youshifted exhibitions online. You performed recitals in your living rooms. You setup home studios and workspaces in the midst of siblings and pets and familymembers, all while figuring out how to juggle everything in a “new normal.”The world may be changed forever by this pandemic, but you are undoubtedlyprepared to confront current and future challenges head-on, regardless of wherethe next months and years take you. You are prepared for anything. Your studies inthe arts and design at Penn State have taught you how to think beyond limitations, solve problems resourcefully, work collaboratively, take risks, and perhapsmost importantly, to persevere. We in the College of Arts and Architecturewait with eager anticipation of what you do next. WE ARE proud of you!
