FLORIDA COLLEGE ENTRY-LEVEL PLACEMENT TEST (FCELPT)2008-09 GUIDELINESThe Florida College Entry-Level Placement Test (FCELPT) is more commonly known as the ACCUPLACER(CPT). The CPT assesses basic mathematics and communications competencies that are essential toperform college-level work.ADMINISTRATION OF THE CPT TO PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSMiami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) and MDC have an agreement for the administration of the CPTto public high school students, in accordance with State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.0315 and Section1008.30, Florida Statutes. The ACCUPLACER (CPT) is offered as an optional test to eligible high schoolstudents in the 11th grade. Because of the primary purpose of the CPT, post-secondary institutions remain incontrol of this test and are accountable for its integrity and security. The CPT places incoming students into appropriate college-level courses. When high school students havethe opportunity to take the CPT while still in high school, they can be given additional counseling andadvisement for their future plans during high school. CPT scores may be used to establish eligibility for theFlorida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award and the Bright Futures Scholarship Program.MDC administers and scores the CPT at no cost to the student. M-DCPS schools must notify students of theopportunity to take the CPT and coordinate registration procedures with MDC. It is recommended thatstudents be tested as late as possible during their junior year, preferably late fall or early spring, in order toprovide ample time for skill acquisition and still coordinate with registration and course scheduling constraintsfor the coming school year.WHAT IS NEW IN 2008-2009?Senate Bill 1908 stipulates that testing is an option for 11th grade students who indicate aninterest in post-secondary education and received an FCAT Reading level score of 2-3 and/or aMathematics level score of 3-4. It is not mandatory. The process to determine student interestin post-secondary education may include a student statement of goals, identified goals in thestudent's educational plan, or simply be implied by the student's appearance at the testing site atthe time of administration. MDC will continue to participate in the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT)/CPTPilot Project which has been extended through the 2009 spring term. The project allows eligiblefirst-time-in-college regular admitted or dual enrollment MDC students – to be exempt from takingthe CPT if they earn an FCAT scale score within the ranges listed below:oReading 355-500 (equivalent of Level 4 or 5) for exemption from college preparatoryreading and placement in ENC 1101oMath 375-500 (equivalent of Level 5) for placement in MAC 1105, MGF 1106, or MGF1107.For additional FCAT information, visit http://www.mdc.edu/testing information/,then under Attention Students! Attachment CMiami Dade College and Miami-Dade County Public SchoolsThe Florida College Entry-Level Placement TestInformation for High School StudentsWhat would you like to do when you graduate from high school? Are you planning to attend college? If you are, itis important for you to start thinking about it now so that you can be ready for that important step. All of the Community Colleges in Florida are required to give a test to students who are entering college for thefirst time to find out if they are ready to take college-level classes. To prepare for college, it is very important thatyou take the right courses in high school. Miami Dade College gives a test called The Florida College Entry-LevelPlacement Test (FCELPT), more commonly called the ACCUPLACER (CPT), which will assist you in your plansfor college preparation. What is the Florida College Entry-Level Placement Test? This is a test that measures your skills in three areas: reading comprehension, sentence skills, and mathematics. You must go to one of Miami Dade College's testing centers to take the CPT.Test instructions and practice questions appear on the computer screen. You will use the keyboard or a mouse toselect your answers. You must answer every question in the order in which it appears because you cannot skip aquestion or return later to change an answer. So, if you are not sure of an answer, you must take your bestguess. You are not permitted to use dictionaries, books, notes, or electronic devices. Scratch paper will beprovided by the test administrator for student use during the mathematics sections of the test. This test is treated just like any other important test — you must do your own work. Any improper behavior in theroom will be cause for dismissal.Do I have to pay a fee for this test? No, there is no cost to the student. What kinds of questions are included in the test? All questions are multiple choice. The Reading Comprehension part measures how well you understand what youread. The Sentence Skills part measures your understanding of how sentences are put together and what makesa sentence complete. The Algebra part measures your knowledge of algebra including operations with realnumbers, algebraic expressions, and the solution of equations. The results of the Algebra test determine if youshould take the Arithmetic test or the College-Level Mathematics test. Why do I need to take this test? Do I need it to graduate? This test is not needed to graduate. It is given to you now in order to help you discover the areas that you need tostudy while in high school in order to give you the opportunity to choose the courses that will prepare you to dowell in college. If you take the appropriate courses, by the time you graduate from high school you should beready to take college-level courses and should not have to spend time in remedial courses. How long is the test? The ACCUPLACER (CPT) is not a timed test. Students usually take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to finish it.Do I have to prepare for the test?Since the purpose of the test is to measure your current skill level, there is no need to study. However, you maywish to review the skills that you have learned. Some students like to “brush up” on mathematics skills or rules ofgrammar. Sample questions similar to the ones found in the CPT are provided at the end of this informationpacket. Testing and Test Preparation information can be accessed via http://www.mdc.edu/testinginformation/.Remember, the CPT is only useful if you take it seriously and do your best work. Some of the things that will helpyou do your best are: get a good night's sleep; eat breakfast or lunch before the test; relax; and do not allowpeople to distract you. Talk to your guidance counselor for other test-taking tips.C-1Assessment, Research, and Data Analysis2008-2009

What do I need to do to take the test? You will need to: Submit a registration form to the CPT coordinator in your school.Select a testing date and time from the list provided by your school's CPT coordinator.Get an admission ticket from the CPT coordinator.Go to the assigned Miami Dade College testing location on the day of your test. You will have to provideyour own transportation. Be on time.Know your social security number.Present your admission ticket at the Miami Dade College testing center on the day of the test, togetherwith valid photo identification such as a Florida driver's license, State of Florida Identification card, unexpired passport, recent alien residency card, military ID, high school ID, or identification letter onschool letterhead with a recent photo. How will I know about my results?MDC will provide you with two copies of your score report at the end of the testing session. One copy is for youand the other is for the school CPT coordinator who will distribute the score reports to counselors and will assistcounselors, students, and parents with its interpretation. The results will help you and your counselor plan yourhigh school schedule so you can take the courses that will prepare you for college. These test results will notaffect the grades in any of your high school courses. Can I take this test again? This test is not a pass or fail test. It is used to let you and your school know in what areas you need to work on inhigh school – reading, writing, or mathematics. If needed, you will be able to take it again when you graduate andare ready to enroll in a State community college or university. Why is this test important?Miami Dade College offers scholarships to high school students who have outstanding academic performance. One of the requirements to qualify (in addition to being in the top 20% of the graduating class) is to pass two ofthe three sections of the CPT, or present appropriate scores on the SAT or ACT.The CPT is an important test because it helps to determine if you can get a scholarship at Miami Dade College.Scores from the CPT are also used to determine eligibility to earn the Gold Seal Scholars Award through theBright Futures Scholarship Program. What else do I need to know about the test?Taking it now offers you the opportunity to improve your college and career readiness and reduce your chance ofneeding post-secondary remediation in reading, writing, and mathematics after graduation.Where can I get more information?Additional information about the testing program offered at Miami Dade College, the Student Guide to theACCUPLACER (CPT) and other CPT resources can be accessed online viahttp://www.mdc.edu/testing information/.C-2Assessment, Research, and Data Analysis2008-2009
